Bethany Lutheran Homes of La Crosse, Wisconsin was conceived in the hearts and minds of men and women who said, “We need a home for the aging to live in peace and dignity, where a Christian philosophy will be the guide.” Bethany Lutheran Homes began as a dream in 1946 and continues to thrive with the support of 22 member churches.

Living a Full Life

Bethany Lutheran Homes has several housing options available to the elderly. These options include Independent Apartments and Townhomes, Residential Care Apartment Complexes, Community Based Residential Facilities and a Skilled Nursing Facility.

Independent Living Apartments and Townhomes are designed for individuals who continue to make their own decisions and choices. Select personal, supportive and nursing services are made available for the residents residing in Independent Living Plus apartments, upon request.

Residential Care Apartment Complexes provide each resident with an independent apartment that is homelike and residential in character. Personal, supportive and nursing services are made available for the residents. Each apartment has an individual, lockable entrance and exit; a kitchen, individual bathroom, sleeping and living areas. It provides residents up to 28 hours per week of personal, supportive and nursing services.

Community Based Residential Facilities provide care, treatment, and other services to five or more unrelated adults who need supportive or protective services or supervision because they are unable to or do not wish to live independently. This type of facility is limited to those who do not require care above intermediate nursing care or more than 3 hours of nursing care per week.

Skilled Nursing Facilities are state certified health care facilities that provide 24-hour care for residents who need more than 7 hours a week of nursing or personal care. Residents may be admitted for short term respite or recuperative stays, or for long term care for chronic conditions.

“In her later years, Ruth Margaret Gallagher, our much-loved mom, became an “eloper.” Determined to walk La Crosse Wisconsin to her childhood home in Chicago Illinois, she would slip out any unguarded door. After frantic searches, and subsequent trips to the E.R., we reluctantly admitted her to “The Lighthouse” Dementia Unit at Bethany Lutheran Homes in La Crosse.

Under the care of the kind and professional staff, Mom thrived at The Lighthouse. She enjoyed the creative projects, ate meals with “her gang,” and often said she loved her “art school.” As her dementia progressed, the staff was there for her – and for us. They taught us how to minimize her confusion, and help her enjoy each day.

When Mom’s life drew to a close, the Lighthouse caregivers kept her comfortable. They wrapped her in a cheery yellow quilt, brought her out each morning to watch the birds, and showed us how to ease her final days.

From the day Mom arrived at Bethany Lutheran, to the evening she died, the entire staff treated Mom and all of us – her adult children, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – with affection and respect. We are especially grateful to the staff of The Lighthouse for the peace and happiness they brought to our mom and all our family.”
