INTRODUCTION
How Do You Start?
Anyone who has performed a song in front of an audience knows just
how important a musical introduction to it can be. An intro sets themood of a piece, establishes a key, and prepares the listener for
what’s to come. Most commonly, an intro will present m~ important piece ofmelodic material--the last part of the chorus of a song, for example--to estab-lish a theme. While this can be a very effective technique, an intro can be anynumber of tt~ngs. It can serve as a cue for other musicians or performers (see
Hyman, p. 50); it can establish a characteristic "groove" (Scivales, p. 132); or itcan suggest extra-musical clues, such as clock tower bells (Morris, p. 29). An
intro can even be deceptive, begirming in one tonality and leading into anoth-er (Morris, p. 69). Indeed, there are as many ways to introduce a song as thereare piano players in the world. (And at last count there was no shortage!)But the truth is, sometimes the greatest hurdle to creating a successful per-formance is starting out in the right way.
This book is designed to offer piano players a source of intros from which to
draw for a variety of musical settings. While we’ve Included categories specif-ic to well-established styles--Latin, countmd, waltz, etc.--the majority of the popand jazz intros are divided into three broad classifications: ballads (for slowertunes), medium tempo (for many swing tunes and otheì moderately-pacedsongs) and up tempo (for faster songs). This will allow the individual player toselect intros based on tempo, since many of the intros can be adapted to fit dif-ferent styles. However, this is not to say that an intro found in the ballad cate-gor~ for example, has to be used for a ballad: the categories (and tempo indi-cations) contained herein should be used simply as guides. We’ve also includ-ed a special Ellington category that will allow you to play in the style of thisgreat jazz master. And since transposition is so often a factor in performing,we’ve set each example in three keys.
In addition, our arrangers have provided suggestions for tunes that work
well with a particular intro, which we’ve organized into a handy index forquick reference. Naturally, these are simply suggestions--most of these introsare "generic" and can be used for m~y number of tunes.
Ultimately, this book will best serve as a way to help you develop your ownpersonally-styled intros and arrangements.

Ellington
_ DAVlD BERGER SongwarmSuggestiOn:Valley
"Warm Valley" is probably Ellington’s toost haunting intro. In case there is any question as tothe meaning o~ the title, I might point out that the piece on the flip side of the originM 78rpmrecord was "Flaming Sword." The melody azad chords of the tune forto a descending chromaticscale, hence the right hôaad of this intro mores back anti forth froiìa D to C#, with diatordc pass-ing notes displaced an octave higher. Harmonically, Ellington creates the illusion of somefllingmore complex than what is actually going on by setting up three-note consonant chords in theleft hmad raad adding a fourth note in the right. The resulting sotmds are Ebm(majT)/Bb,Bbdim7, repeated twice, Ebm(maiT)/Bb and F13b9. A nice touch is the descending Ebm6 chordin the right hand in the last measure. This arpeggio combines C to Bb moti~ of the right handand the Ebm chord of the left hand--a neatly wrapped package.

Song Suggestion:Conga Brava
This intro sets up a Latin groove. Although the emphasis is rhythmic (rh: 3 notes plus fournotes, repeated), there is also interesting melodie, harmonic and dynamìc material. Themelody starts with m~ ascending octave, descends a fourth, then moves upwards in a stepwisefashion. In the intro, the top note in the right hand ascends a fifth then a fourth (creating anoctave between the first and third notes). The second measure repeats this pattern, but addsan extra note a step above (foreshadowing the ascending stepwise motion in the tune).Harmonically, Ellington is planting the seeds for modal jazz twenty years hence. Although thetune is in major, he plays two incomplete minor ninth chords folIowed by another parallelninth chord, thereby giving us a cross-relation of a minor and major third. This is the samevoicing Horace Silver popularized in the 1960s on tunes like "Nutville."

Song Suggestion:Moon Mist
"Moon Iv[ist" is another Eltington mood piece, this time a collaboration between Duke and bisson Mercer. The left hand defines the basic chords in half notes w~xile the right hand plays asequence of arpeggios. The first bar is a Dm7 arpeggio over a Cm--the sixth, ninth, eleventh, and the root. The second bar uses the same rhythm and shape, but different pitches. Instead ofstarting with tensions and landing on a chord tone, Ellington arpeggiates the triad and landson the ninth of Fm, wlxich becomes the thirteenth of Bb7 (the note G).
Measure three is a development of the arpeggio motlf in this case a Cm arpeggio followed byan A flat eighth note and a repeat of the Cm arpeggio. We finally land on the nh~th of Cm inmeasure four, wt~ich becomes the third of Bb7. We can also look at measures three ~u~d four asAbmaj7 BbTb9 E7#9. The final chord (E7#9) leads us to believe that the fh’st chord of the tunewill be Eb, however we are surprised to learn it is Cru. Perhaps the top note of the voicing (G)makes it feel logicat that we are going to Cm, because G is the dominant of Cm.

Song Suggestion:Lady Of The Lavender Mist
"Lady Of qìae Lavender Mist," another fine mood piece, also deals with a melodic arpeggiat-ed right hand (this time downward) against a chordal left hand. There is a Bb pedal in thepinky of the left hand over which Ellington uses the following chord progression: Eb6 G7(which over the Bb makes a Bb13b9 chord) Eb6 Ebdim(maj7) Bbsus4 Ebmaj7(add6). Note thatthe rhythm of the right hand has a very sim~ar construction to "Moon Mist." Atso notice thedescending blues pentato~aic scale In measure four. After all the B-flats on the bottom, theB-flats on the top are toost satisfying. It doesn’t httrt that B-flat is the dominant of the upcom-ing Eb chord.

Song Suggestion:Take The ’A’ Train
This is probably the toost famous intro in jazz. In one measure, Etlington epitomizes the entirepiece. The movement from C to D7b5, combined with the descending minor sixth from E toAb, is the most distinguistüng motif in the tm~e.
The tempo and swing style of the pieces are set up by the rhythm. Note the slight rhythrnicalteration in the left hand in the third bar (a small surprise), the descending whole tone scalein the right hand, and the smooth voice leading in the left hand.

Song Suggestion:ht A Mellotone
"In A Mellotone" is a very simple repetitive riff tune that basically moves from G to Ab. Thisintro follows suit. Not only does the melody center aromad the resolution of G to Ab, but so dothe harmonies (Ab9 G9 Ab9). Although the tune uses diatonic connectIng notes (G Eb F G Ab),the intro uses a chromatic planing effect (Ab G E G Ab), so that we have a beat and a half in G,or rather G mixolydim~.
The first six and a half bars use chromatically moving ninth chords in the left hand. If we lookat the first chord, we find what has become a typical piano voicing. That is, the left hand con-tains a complete voicing (from the bottom up: third, seventh, ninth) and the right h~~d has themelody In octaves (the root). Such a voicing would be atypical for horns (although it can bequite effective), but is the basis of piano shout choruses by mainstream pianists such as OscarPeterson, Ahrnad Jamal and Red Garland. Notice the descending chromatic movement downto the F9 (the dominant of Bb7, the first chord of the tune) in bars six to seven.
Bars seven and eight contain one of the key Ellington piarústic trademarks: the descendingarpeggio. Ellington uses two-, three- or four-note arpeggios repeated in successive octaves. Inthis case we are on an F9 chord and Ellington uses only two different pitches: the fifth and theroot. Note the dramatic effect of usìng extreme registers: measure one starts at the top of thepim~o m~d measu~’e eight finishes at the bottom.

Song Suggestion:Things Ain’t What They Used They Used To Be
One of the basic techniques in jazz is call and response. In "In A Mellotone," the piano trades"ones" with the bass (first bar piano solo, second bar bass, third bar piano, fottrth bar bass, fifthbar piano, sixth bar piano and bass, seventh bar piano, eighth bar saxes). "Things Ain’t WhatThey Used They Used To Be" also uses call and response. Ellington starts by trading two beatsbetween the piano and the drums, coupled with the piano left hand. In the third bar he tradesbeats, and in the fourth bar he trades eighth notes for three beats, finishing with two chordsthat bring the two elements together.
The right hand voicings here are typical of the stride pim]o tradition dating back to James P.Johnson and Fats Waller. Both Ellington and Basie were disciples and used these voicingsthroughout their careers. The idea is that the tonic rernains constant on the top, the sixth degreeremains constant on the bottom, while the middle voice mores back and forth between thethird m,d fourth degrees, in this example creating Dbó and Gb triads. The open spacing helpscreate this characteristic sound. The final beat of the intro mores from D9#11 to Dbó/9. Tb_isspacing (from the bottorn up: root, fifth, third, seventh, ninth and augmented eleventh resolv-ing down to root, fifth, third, slxth, ninth, fifth) is common to many pianists, including ArtTatum, Bud Powell and Tadd Dameron. It is also a very common voicing for horns.
