Welcome

It’s June so that can mean only one thing, theGreat Welsh Beer & Cider Festival is back at theMotorpoint Arena for the sixth year in a row! TheFestival started out at the STAR Centre in Splottbefore moving to City Hall and now we have settled in the Motorpoint, a perfect air-conditionedhall in the centre of Cardiff.

The past year has been another great one forWelsh breweries with the number increasing allthe time. We have also seen the more estab-lished brewers experiment more with differentrecipes and ingredients –it has been fun trackingdown the Brains Craft Brewery beers in Cardiffpubs the past year and we have an unique selection of their craft beers on the front of thebar for you to drink this year. Celt ExperienceBrewery in Caerphilly have also delved into theircrafty side as have Tiny Rebel and others such asOtley, Brecon and Kite.

On the Foreign Bar this year we have teamed upwith the Bottle Shop from Roath to bring somefantastic beers to the Festival – the Brewers &Union beers are just stunning. The Cider andPerry Bar will once again be showcasing drinksfrom Welsh producers and we hope to have thewidest range of anywhere in Wales.

We hope you enjoy the festival and don't forgetto tweet about it using #GWBCF, I'll be tweetingabout the festival myself from my personalaccount of @ArfurD and other staff members willbe using the @GWBCF account, so we will try

and respond to your comments straight away, time permitting.

We, the Festival Organising Committee would liketo say a big thank you to all that have helped usmake the Festival a success, not just the brewersand cidermakers but Steve and his staff atInspiration in Swansea, Day’s Van Rental andDaniel and Chris at Orchard Media, as well as toPhil, Alex and all the staff at Motorpoint Arena.

Jever Pils, 4.9% ABVBrewed in a brewery founded in 1848, Jever Pilstypifies the very dry style of pilsner from Frieslandin the North-West corner of Germany and islagered for 90 days.

Schenkerla Marzen 5.1% ABVA speciality of Bamberg, this beer is a dark, bot-tom fermented smokebeer, brewed with smokedmalt from the brewery’s own maltings. The brew-pub was first mentioned in 1405 and has been inthe same family for six generations.

Brewers & Union Unfiltered Lager 5% ABVBrewers & Union are an unique collaboration thatinvolves South African and Portuguese brewerswho brew at different breweries around theworld, this particular beer is brewed in Bavaria.

Their unfiltered lager is pale straw in colour andpours with a foamy white head. Being an unfil-tered beer there is yeast in the finished beer giv-ing it a naturally cloudy appearance. Freshly cutgrass and fresh baked bread provide the aromasto this beer. A smooth, bitter-sweet flavour withvanilla hints leads to a dry, astringent finish with asubtle lingering bitterness.

Brewers & Union Steph Weisse 5%A wheat beer, pale orange in colour, naturallycloudy with a rich, foamy-white head. The aromais heavy with cloves, this is a characteristic ofwheat beers and is imparted by the yeast used tobrew them. An initial bitter flavour is soon dis

placed in the mouth bythe rich, spiciness ofmore cloves andoranges. The rich spici-ness continues well intothe aftertaste with somedryness added as well.

Brewers & Union IPA 5.5%A fresh, fruity and gentle IPA, golden, hazy-orangein colour with hints of baked apricot and wildhoney. The soft carbonation leads to a lingeringfruity, malty, herbal-hoppy finish.

Cider and Perry

Cider-tastic!

Once again at the Great Welsh Beer & CiderFestival we aim to bring you the best realciders and perries that are available. As

well as our own fantastic producers from Wales weare featuring ciders from as far away as Lancashireand even Scotland as well as old favourites fromSomerset and Herefordshire. Some of our produc-ers are very small, producing only a few hundredgallons a year, others started small and are nowlarge makers but the same amount of care andconsideration is shown in making the largeamounts as is in the small amounts.

We should have ciders to everyone's taste andpalette here; from sweet to extra dry but remem-ber one makers medium could be another makerssweet so at the Festival we will be using a scoringsystem marked on the labels with 1 for extra sweetand 12 for extra dry.

Don't forget to try our perries as well, made frompears in the same way cider is made from apples.Perry pear trees take a long time to grow and canlive for hundreds of years, also the flavours are alot more subtle than you would find in cide

As well as visiting the beer festival, there are alsosome brilliant pubs to visit in the City Centre. No journey to Cardiff is complete without a visitto the 2012 Cardiff CAMRA Pub of the Year, theCity Arms on Quay Street. This old pub wasreinvented as a speciality ale house by owners SABrain in late 2010 and has established itself asthe premier beer pub of the City. As well as beersfrom Brains, the City Arms serves beer from otherWelsh breweries as well as brews from furtherafield. American and German beer festivals havebeen held along with a cider festival and there isalways a wide choice of beer available, on handpump or straight from the barrel.

Opposite the City Arms, the former GlamorganCouncils Staff Club has been given a new lease onlife and has reopened as Fire Island. A regular outlet for Tiny Rebel and Celt Experiencebeers, Fire Island is a must-visit pub in what isbecoming the ‘Craft-beer quarter’ of Cardiff!

A short distance away, on Westgate Street, is thestate-of-the-art Zerodegrees microbrewery, housed in a former garage, built in the art-decostyle. A range of regular beers, including Pale Ale,Black Lager, Pilsner are matched with monthlyspecials such as an Elderflower Beer and thestunning Oktoberfest Lager available at the sametime as the small beer festival held in Munich inSeptember. Pizzas are also available at this pub.

Next door to Zerodegrees, the tiled QueensVaults now features beers from Tiny Rebel brew-ery on as well as the best selection of draughtcider in the City Centre. Good value meals servedthroughout the day as well.

Towards the castle, at the top end of High Street,is the Goat Major, which serves Brains beersand guest ales. Amid the gleaming brasswork andtiles the menu is worth perusing as this pub spe-cialises in pies and has even won ‘Pie of the Year’for their creations. As well as the fixed menu, chalkboards announce the weekly special piewhich could be anything, from venison to cheese.

Nearby on Duke Street, opposite the South-Eastend of the castle wall isthe timber-frontedRummer Tavern whichopens out to a cavernous interior. TheRummer is a rare localoutlet for Wye Valley HPAand features regularly-changing guest beersand a cider on hand-pump.

Just around the corner, in the shadow of the spireof St John’s Church is the Owain Glyndwr, apub that has been renamed more times thanalmost any other Cardiff pub and was once thebrewery tap for the long-defunct Nell’s Brewery.Previous names include the Tennis Courts, theBuccaneer, the Mably Arms and the Kemys-TynteArms. Today this busy pub is a rare local outlet forbeers from the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery.

Nearby in Church Street is the famous OldArcade which features in the CAMRA book ‘RealHeritage Pubs of Wales’ and

the Brains beers arealways in top formin this earlyVictorian pub.

At the lower end of the Hayes is the Duke ofWellington, an imposing red-brick building builtin 1892 and named in honour of the Duke tocommemorate his death 50 years earlier. ThisBrains serves guest beers and opens early if any-one wants a coffee.

The Cottage on St Mary Street is worth poppingin for the range of Brains beers available, although be warned, the Brains Craft Brewerybeers do tend to sell out very quickly!

Tudor Brewery was purchased inMarch 2011 by Stephen Devine afterseeing the potential it offered. Thebrewery had fallen into disrepair andceased trading in 2009, so Stephen setabout creating a suitable environmentto begin trading once again. This wascompleted by May 2011 when Stephenwas told he had lung cancer. Unfortunately, he lost his fightagainst the disease in June 2011.

His wife, Gaenor, and their childrendecided that they wanted to continueStephen’s dream of creating a micro-brewery that reflected the spirit of theSouth Wales valleys.

As siblings, the Devine children arean extremely close knit group and theyall pulled together to help their mothercarry the brewery forward.

The first brew hit the market in July2011 and since this time has gone fromstrength to strength. All the beers produced are named after landmarksin the area, hence Blorenge, Skirrid, Sugarloaf and Black Mountain.

The latest creation is named after theroad from Abergavenny to BlaenauGwent and called Black Rock. Thisreflects the Devine family’s businessaim to grow their company and bringwork opportunities into a county thatthree of the four children now live.

Tudor Brewery was one of onlyTHREE breweries in Wales to obtainthe highest accolade of three goldstars at The Great Taste Awards2012 for their pale ale. Classed as theOscars of the culinary world, all atTudor are honoured and extremelypleased at this affirmation of quality
