Scouts perform acts of service on a daily basis, because good Scouts try

to “do a good turn daily” and they “help other people at all times.” Good Scouts are true servant leaders.

All Scouting service is noteworthy, but occasionally that service reaches a unique level and must be singled out. The service rendered by the Scouts of Troop 319 of Brooklyn, Ohio, is one such example.

The Scouts of Troop 319 recently received a letter of recognition from the Chairman of the National William T. Hornaday Awards Committee that read in part, “I wish to congratulate the young men of Troop 319 for having earned an unprecedented six William T. Hornaday Awards for outstand-ing service to conservation.” Considering that Hornaday projects are Eagle project-scope, the accomplishments of Troop 319 are indeed extraordinary.

What started out as a simple clean-up project in the woods behind the Brooklyn Fire Department turned into a passion for good environmental stew-ardship and sound conservation practices. Their projects benefited their city, a local state park, and even a nearby national park. Dr. Hornaday believed that youth were the gateway to changing the attitudes of the people towards conservation. His message of service and appreciation of nature has resonated loud and clear with the Scouts of Troop 319.

Their legacy will be a model for those who come after. The young men of Troop 319 have indeed met their obligation to “leave it better than you found it.” Well done, Scouts!

Inhissparetime,kurttrainsformarathons,triathlonsorlongdistanttreks.overthepast30years,hehascompleted80marathons(Bostonishisfavorite)andnineIronmantriathlons,includingtwoIronmanWorldChampionshipsinhawaii.kurthasamarathonpersonalbestof2:36(twohoursandthirty-sixminutes).LastJuly,hehikedthe221milelongJohnMuirTrailintheSierraNevadaMountainsofCaliforniawithfriends.Mosthikerstakethreeweekstocompletethetrailbuttheyonlyhadtwoweeksofvacation.Theytrainedhard,usedultralightgearandutilizedtwofoodre-supplypointsinordertocompletethehikein12days.

Inaddition,kurt spenteightyearsandcountlesshourscoachingfirst timemarathoners for Joints inMotion,benefitingthearthritisFoundation,andtriathletesforTeaminTraining,benefitingtheLeukemiaSociety.Inall,heestimatesthathehashelped300athletessuccessfullycompletetheirracewhileraisinghundredsofthousandsofdollarsfortheirrespectivecharity.healsoteachesthe6:00a.m.cycleclassatLifetimeFitnessinBeachwood.

herearehisthoughtsonhowScoutinghasimpactedhislife.TM: When and where did you join Scouting and when did you earn your Eagle award? My father founded Troop 527 chartered to Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Royalton. I didn’t participate in

Cub Scouts because I was always with my father and his Scouts. I joined the troop as soon as I was old enough with several other friends from junior high school. I earned my Eagle Scout award when I was 14 years old, before interests in running cross country and track took my time away from Scouting. Over the years, my Dad served in many roles leading Troop 527.

TM: What did you like most about Scouting? Spending time with my friends camping and learning new skills was the best part about Scouting. TM: Do you have any favorite camping experiences?I always enjoyed summer camp at Beaumont and Klondike Derbies. Another favorite was our Troop’s annual weekend

camping trip to Camp Manatoc in the Cuyahoga Valley. We arrived Friday, set up our campsite and on Saturday morning after an early breakfast, we would complete a 13 mile hike through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. I wasn’t very big or strong at that age, but during those long treks I developed a love for endurance sports that followed me through life.

I think I was 12 or 13 when we went to Tinnerman Canoe Base in Canada. That was an incredible week full of many different challenges physically and mentally as well as beautiful scenery.

TM: Do you have a favorite merit badge?The Pioneering Merit Badge was probably my favorite. The Cooking and First Aid Merit Badge would be right up

there, too. Life Saving was the hardest merit badge for me to earn because of my size. The Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge prepared me for my high school government class during my senior year. In

fact, the merit badge book is so comprehensive that my high school class was just a review of what I learned as a Scout. TM: What skills did you learn in Scouting that you still use today? Earning the Pioneering Merit Badge provided the fundamental of engineering a structure. Building the 12’ high structure

was fun to do as a teen. Basic camping, first aid, cooking and wilderness survival skills were all put to use last summer when I hiked the John Muir Trail.

TM: How has your Eagle Scout award benefitted you in your career?I gravitated toward the technically-oriented merit badges because I enjoyed them; they, in turn, gave me skills needed

to pursue a technical career. The discipline, planning and initiative that you have to have at every level of Boy Scouts, especially to achieve Eagle Scout, are the same traits needed to excel professionally. In Scouting, I quickly learned the motto “Be Prepared” which became a foundation for success in college and for my career.

TM: What did you do for your Eagle Scout project?For my Eagle Scout project, I helped renovate the North Royalton Nature Center. This included rebuilding trails,

managing erosion and fixing an overflow drain pipe for the Center’s main pond. The drain pipe had settled significantly, causing most of water to drain from the pond. Leading other Scouts from my troop, we excavated the pipe, raised its level and reinforced the underside with steel to prevent future settling.

I am very proud of this accomplishment. It instilled discipline and drive in me at a very young age from which I continue to benefit. I’m very proud of all the different things I learned in Scouting. And, I had a blast!

TM: Any other random thoughts on Scouting?Probably the most valuable book I read at a young age was the Boy Scout Handbook. There’s no way I can say enough

good things about Scouting. Scouting gave me an outlet to channel my youth’s endless energy into positive activities and the lessons taught by the Scout Oath and Scout Law set the stage for values I’ve used and cherished through my whole life.
