Grand Blanc’s 1979 team became the first Big Nine Conference squad to sweep a flighted league tournament, capturing all seven flights – four singles and three doubles. The Big Nne crowed a singles and a doubles champion in 1973 and ’74 before going to a seven-flight system in 1975. The 1979 Bobcats also took second place at the Class A state tournament.

*Denotes that Sue Schupack took over Carman-Ainsworth’s team at 8 a.m. on May 8, 2003 (the day of the Big Nine tournament) when Cavaliers athletic director Bob Root suspended then-coach Doug Carey for the remainder of the season. Carey was suspended for a series of behavioral problems that showed a lack of responsibility in directing the team. He was officially removed from his coaching position in June of 2003. 11 The Big Nine Conference dropped its two-thirds/one-third system in favor of a 50/50 system. In the two-thirds/one-third system, the conference dual meets counted two-thirds and the conference tournament counted one-third towards determing the overall league champion. With the 50/50 system, the duals and conference tournament each count 50 percent towards the overall championship.

Ray Giguere led Carman High and Carman-Ainsworth to five Big Nine Conference championships in a six-year span from 1982-87. It is the most titles won by a non-Grand Blanc coach.

    April 22, 1980

    Flushing 4, Grand Blanc 3

    At Flushing

Under the guidance of the legendary Art Vince and a gangly left-hander named Curtis Wright (pictured below), Flushing downed Grand Blanc, 4-3, to become the first Big Nine Conference team to beat the Bobcats. The historic victory was clinched when Wright beat Grand Blanc’s Tom Johnson, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.

The Raiders’ triumph ended Grand Blanc’s string of consecutive Big Nine dual-meet victories at 66. Later on that season, Flushing would become the first Big Nine team, other than Grand Blanc, to win the overall conference title.
