What is the purpose of the Church? What is

the mission of the Parish? Ultimately, why is

it that we have any kind of Parish or local

Catholic Community presence at all? Assuming we know

what the “mission” of the Church is, then what’s the best

way to pursue accomplishing that mission? These ques-

tions are important to ask - most Catholics (not all, to be

sure, but most) have become so accustomed to the

Church’s presence in our Northern NY communities that

we have kind of forgotten what the purpose of it all is.

How would you answer those questions given at the top of

this article? I want us to be asking - and trying to answer -

these questions. It’s not just me. Bishop LaValley wants

us to. The purpose - the mission of Jesus Christ - is to be

carried forward in our time and in our place. How do we

do this? That’s the reason why the Bishop is requiring a

“Pastoral Plan” from each parish grouping in the diocese

by the end of this calendar year. Though we’re now

served by one Pastor, our planning work is not done. We

Catholic faithful in Massena and Louisville still need to

wrestle with those questions. We’ll have public “listening

sessions” to really delve into these matters on March 15th
