AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND 4 TH TEST 3 RD DAY MISBAH HAPPY WITH PAK 'SPECIAL WINS' Abu Dhabi, Dec 28: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq termed the one-day vic- tories over South Africa and Sri Lanka as "special wins" which meant his team ended a tough year on a high. Pakistan beat South Africa 2-1 last month - their first-ever one-day series win over the Proteas - before clinching the Sri Lanka series 3-2 on Friday. Even though Pakistan lost the fifth and final match by two wickets in Abu Dhabi, Misbah said the series win was satisfying. "I think it was a tough year for us but the two series we won in South Africa and now against Sri Lanka, they are very spe- cial and ended our year on a high note," Misbah said after Friday's game. The win over Sri Lanka was Pakistan's seventh one-day series win this year -- their best-ever in a calendar year -- which also included a 2-1 victory against bitter rivals India in January. Misbah hoped the one-day series win over Sri Lanka would lift his team's morale ahead of the three-Test series start- ing in Abu Dhabi from Tuesday. "We did struggle in the middle of the year," said Misbah of Pakistan's loss in the Champions Trophy in June in England. "We have to improve our fielding because we had Friday's match in our hands but we let it go because of poor fielding." Misbah hit a solid 51 to end the year with 1373 runs in 34 one-days -- the highest by any player in 2013 -- to lead Pakistan to 232 all out. Sri Lanka sneaked through in the final over with Dinesh Chandimal hitting an unbeaten 64. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews showed disappointment over the series loss. "We were good enough to get over it but I think we were nowhere near our brand of cricket and disappointed that we lost the series," said Mathews, describing defeat in the first match as the turning point. "If you look at the series, the first game was very crucial, we lost that by 11 runs and had we won that game we would have been sitting 3-2 winners," said Mathews of the match in Sharjah. Sri Lanka levelled the series in Dubai with a two-wicket win before Pakistan won the third and fourth matches to take an unbeatable 3-1 lead. Mathews said his team will be more competitive in Tests with experienced bats- man Mahela Jayawardene and ace spinner Rangana Herath joining the squad. "We played without Herath and Jay- awardene in the one-days but they will back for the Tests and so we will be at our full strength and we will be more competi- tive," said Mathews. AGENCIES Fresh collapse gives Aussie edge Melbourne, Dec 28: Australia were chasing 201 runs to win the fourth Ashes Test and take a 4-0 series lead after a stunning English batting collapse on a chaotic third day's play in Melbourne on Saturday. Spinner Nathan Lyon and pacer Mitchell Johnson spearheaded a rousing Australian fightback after trailing by 51 runs on the first innings to skittle the tourists for 179 in 61 overs. Lyon finished with 5/50 and claimed his 100th Test wicket, while man-of-the- series Johnson took 3/25 and now has 31 wickets in the series. The Australians, needing 231 to win, reached stumps on 30 without losing a wicket with Chris Rogers on 18 and David Warner on 12. England suffered two batting collapses -- losing three wickets for one run in the middle stages and their last five wickets for six runs. Although the highest successful run chase at the MCG is England's 332/7 in 1928, since the current 'drop-in' pitch was first used at the ground in 1996 the highest successful fourth innings run chase since then is 183 by South Africa in 2008. The Australians roared back into contention with a sensational bowling and fielding performance with Lyon and Johnson the heroes on a compelling day's cricket after they were all out for 204. Alastair Cook (51) and Michael Carberry (12) gave the tourists a steady start with a 65-run opening stand, but once the openers were removed England crumbled losing their last eight wickets for 93 runs. Johnson played a role in three of four dismissals to have the tourists tumbling to 87/4 in the middle session. Cook, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Christmas Day, became the youngest player to score 8,000 Test runs before he was trapped leg before wicket by Johnson. Carberry went the same way to Peter Siddle for 12 off 81 balls before Joe Root was run out by abrilliant piece of fielding from Johnson. Root, on 15, scampered for a single only for Johnson to throw down his stumps at the bowler's end with the batsman well short of his ground. Two balls later Ian Bell hit Lyon straight to the ever-present Johnson at mid-off for a first-ball duck. It just got worse for England with Ben Stokes caught off Lyon for 19 before Jonny Bairstow's dismissal triggered a stunning five-wicket tumble for six. AGENCIES SOUTH AFRICA V INDIA 2 ND TEST 3 RD DAY Bad light stalls SA, Kallis Durban, Dec 28: South Africa were 299 for five in their first innings in the final session of day three when rain halted the play in the second and final cricket Test against India on Saturday. Jacques Kallis (78) and Dale Steyn were at the crease when light drizzle came down on the Kingsmead. Ravindra Jadeja struck again to dismiss JP Duminy, giving South Africa fifth blow at the score of 298. Duminy was caught on his back foot in front of the stumps by Jadeja, who earlier scalped both South African openers and danger man AB de Villers. Kallis, however, stood tall against India attack taking South Africa close to visitors total. The visitors managed just one wicket even as retiring all-rounder Kallis and AB de Villiers' 127-run fourth wicket stand helped South Africa reach 267 for four at tea. Countering the loss of three wickets in the first session, the two batsmen brought up their half-centuries in the post-lunch session and the Proteas now trail by only 67 runs, after India scored 334 runs in their first innings. Kallis was unbeaten on 61 runs, off 180 balls with nine fours. JP Duminy (13) was giving him company at the other end after de Villiers departed following a 117-ball 74, studded with nine boundaries. Ravindra Jadeja (3-77) was the pick of the Indian bowlers, with Moham- mad Shami (1-62) the only other wicket-taker of the innings. Zaheer Khan (0-46) and Ishant Sharma (0-65) toiled hard, but failed to provide any breakthroughs. Rohit Sharma (0-11) was again deployed in this session as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni seemed to be missing a second spinner on this dry pitch. After the lunch break, Kallis and de Villiers looked set for a big partner- ship, starting from the 68-run mark. South Africa started at 181/3 as the runs came in quickly. Both batsmen stroked boundaries at will, as the pace bowlers searched for some reverse swing. Zaheer was punished in particular, but de Villiers also aggressive intent against Jadeja, not letting the spinners settle down. He brought up his half-century in the 62nd over of the innings. It was his 34th fifty in 89 Tests. The 100-run partnership came three overs later, as runs continued to come unabated. AGENCIES CMYK
