About LesvosLesvos, this large Greek island, is famous for producing the best ouzo of Greece and for being theland of the famous Greek female poet Sappho, who lived in the 7th century BC and wrotewonderful poems about her lesbian relationships as well as hymns, love songs and poems onvarious themes.

Lesvos is also the birthplace of the writer Aesop, of the philosophers Aristotle and Epicurus, of thefamous poet Odysseas Elytis and of the painter Theophilos.

From the first time, while the ferry approaches the port and the small statue of Liberty, you willfeel amazed.

Apart from its rich cultural background, the island of Lesvos has a lot to offer: amazing medievaland Ottoman architecture, impressive landscapes, beautiful beaches, nice thermal springs, manysea caves and a lush green nature. In fact, a popular activity on Lesvos is birdwatching.

The architecture of the island has also many important structures to show, such as the buildings ofthe old port authority, the National Bank, the girls' school, Tarsi Hammam, numerous churches andtwo castles.

Best Sightseeing in LesvosPetrified ForestLocation: SigriThis forest, 12 km from Sigri, is a rare natural site and was petrified becauseof the intense volcanic activity of the area. In 1985, it was officially declared anatural monument.

Medieval CastleLocation: MytileneThe Castle of Mytilene was originally built in the Medieval times but it hasundergone many transformations by the Genovese and the Turks. This is oneof the strongest castles in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Monastery of LimonasLocation: KaloniThis monastery was founded in 1523 and was used as a spiritual centreduring the Ottoman occupation. The large halls of the monastery have beenturned into an interesting museum, housing various treasures and marvels.The monastery also houses a rich library with more than 15,000 documentsand 450 manuscripts that date from the 9th and 19th century. Women are notallowed to enter the monastery.

Roman AqueductLocation: MoriaThis Roman Aqueduct dates from the 3rd century AD and constitutes one of the first bigtechnical accomplisements of the late Roman architecture. It opened as an archaeological sitein 1995.

Molyvos CastleLocation: MolivosThe Castle of Molyvos stands on top of a hill with pine trees and offersgorgeous view of the area. This is a strong castle with many signs, coat ofarms and other distinctive elements.

Ipsilou MonasteryLocation: AndissaThis Byzantine Monastery of Ipsilou was founded in the 9th century AD tohonour Saint John the Theologian. It is located on the way from Andissa toSigri, at an altitude of 511 m.

Agios Raphael MonasteryLocation: ThermiThis monastery is said to be miracle-working and hosts the skull of AgiosRaphael. It was built on the site of two previous monasteries and this is asacred place of pilgrimage. Saint Raphael is the protector of the island.
