STEP 6
Were entirely ready to have god remove all these defects of character.
…. We then look at Step Six. We have emphasized willingness as being
Indispensable... ALCOHOLICS’ ANONYMOUS, p. 76
Steps Four and Five were difficult, but worthwhile. Now I was stuck on Step Six and, in despair, I picked up the Big Book and read this passage. I was outside, praying for willingness, when I raised my eyes and saw a huge bird rising in the sky. I watched it suddenly give itself up to the powerful air currents of the mountains. Swept along, swooping and soaring, the bird did things seemingly impossible for mortal birds to do. It was an inspiring example of a fellow creature “letting go” to a power greater than itself. I realized that if the bird “took back his will” and tried to fly with less trust, on its power alone, it would spoil its apparent free flight. That insight granted me the willingness to pray the Seventh Step prayer. It’s not easy to know God’s will in each circumstance. I must search out and be ready for the currents, and that’s where prayer and meditation help! Because I am, of myself, nothing, I ask God to grant me the knowledge of His will and the power and courage to carry it out– today. DAILY REFLECTIONS p 163
AA Principle Six Willingness
Make the decision to abandon those negative traits you defined earlier.
Adopt new traits that are more positive and take the steps needed to
leave behind negative ones.
If you want to drink that is your business.
If you want to stop drinking, that is our
business.

DCM Report: As DCM of District 01, I am very pleased to see the current involvement of the Groups and their GSRs at the District level. Getting their feedback and participation assures that the decisions we make here, truly reflects our; members
wishes. I applaud those Groups and GSRs who currently attend our District Meetings, and encourage all those who are not being represented to find a way to join us. Our monthly meetings are designed to regularly review the needs of our District, assess our resources, and then decide on a course of action that maintains the integrity of our Traditions. In addition these Meetings serve as a conduit to the Area and finally the General Service Office in New York. Since serving as DCM, I feel the feedback we have received is very encouraging and hope we continue to increase our numbers. Also, I can never say enough about the people who help serve our community and District; thank you a thousand times over. Our Committee Members are always looking for volunteers to help them. If you feel that you are able to help and have a desire to start your service career, you can contact the appropriate Committee Member listed on the front page of our newsletter. On May 19th and 20th our Area 74 Spring Assembly will meet in Ashland, WI and our delegate, Marty L. Will deliver his report from the 62nd General Service Conference. As I will not be able to attend, Ron O. has graciously agreed to appear in my absence. Thank you for your service and time. In Loving Service. (Gary K.)

Significant June Dates in A.A. History
June 1, 1949 – Anne Smith, Dr. Bob’s wife, died. June 5, 1940 – Ebby Thatcher took a job at the NY World’s Fair. June 6, 1979 – AA gave the two-millionth copy of the Big Book to Joseph Califano, then Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. It was presented by Lois Wilson, Bill’s wife, in New York. June 7, 1939 – Bill and Lois Wilson had an argument, the first of two times Bill almost slipped. June 7, 1941 – The first AA Group in St. Paul, Minnesota, was formed.
June 8, 1941 – Three AA‟s started a group in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
June 10, 1935 – The date that is celebrated as Dr. Bob’s last drink and the official founding date of AA. There is some evidence that the founders, in trying to reconstruct the history, got the date wrong and it was actually June 17.
June 11, 1945 – Twenty-five hundred attend AA‟s 10th Anniversary in
Cleveland, Ohio. June 11, 1969 – Dr. Bob’s granddaughter, Bonna, daughter of Sue Smith and Ernie Galbraith (The Seven Month Slip in the First Edition) killed herself after first killing her six-year-old child. June 15, 1940 – First AA Group in Baltimore, MD, was formed. June 17, 1942 – New York AA groups sponsored the first annual NY area meeting. Four hundred and twenty four heard Dr. Silkworth and AA speakers. June 18, 1940 – One hundred attended the first meeting in the first AA Clubhouse at 334-1/2 West 24th Street ,New York City. June 19, 1942 – Columnist Earl Wilson reported that NYC Police Chief Valentine sent six policemen to AA and they sobered up. “There are fewer suicides in my files,” he commented. June 21, 1944 – The first Issue of the AA Grapevine was published. June 25, 1939 – The New York Times reviewer wrote that the Big Book is “more soundly based psychologically than any other treatment I have ever come upon.” June 28, 1935 – Dr.
Bob and Bill Wilson visited Bill Dotson at Akron’s City
Hospital. June 30, 2000 – More than 47,000 from 87 countries attended the opening meeting of the 65th AA Anniversary in Minneapolis, MN. 1948 – A subscription to the AA Grapevine was donated to the Beloit, Wisconsin, Public Library by a local AA member. 1981 –AA in Switzerland held its 25th Anniversary Convention with Lois Wilson and Nell Wing in attendance.
Some History of AA Chips
The A.A. Grapevine carried many articles on chips and cakes and the following is a brief summary of some.
Feb. 1948 - Why All the Congratulations? "When we start taking bows (even on anniversaries) we bow ourselves right into the cuspidor."
July, 1948 - Group To Give Oscar for Anniversaries. The Larchmont Group of Larchmont, N.Y. gives a cast bronze camel mounted on a mahogany base to celebrate 1st., 5th and 10th anniversaries. "The camel is wholly emblematic of the purposes of most sincere A.A.s, i.e., to live for 24 hours without a drink."
August 1948 - The Artesia, N.Mex. Group awards marbles to all members. If you are caught without your marbles, you are fined 25 cents. This money goes into the Foundation Fund.

A quate from Bill W.'s Wife "I believe that people are good if you
give them half a chance and that good is more powerful than evil. The world
seems to me excruciatingly, almost painfully beautiful at times, and the
goodness and kindness of people often exceed that which even I expect." -
Lois W.
Concept VI The Conference recognizes that the chief initiative and active responsibility in most world service matters should be exercised by the trustee members of the Conference acting as the General Service Board.
Are we familiar with how our General Service Board (G.S.B.) Class A and Class B trustees serve A.A.? Are we familiar with how our other trusted servants serve A.A.?
Are we clear about the terms, “chief initiative” and “active responsibility”? Can we see a direct link to our home group?
6th STEP PRAYER God help me become willing to let go of all the things to which I still cling. Help me to be ready to let you remove all of these defects, that your will and purpose may take their place. AMEN
Tradition Six: An AA group ought never
endorse, finance, or lend the AA name to any
related facility or outside enterprise, lest
problems of money, property, and prestige
divert us from our primary purpose. Should my fellow group members and I
go out and raise money to endow several
AA beds in our local hospital? Is it good for a group to lease a small
building? Are all the officers and members of our
local club for AAs familiar with
“Guidelines on Clubs” (which is available
free from GSO)? Should the secretary of our group serve
on the mayor’s advisory committee on
alcoholism? Some alcoholics will stay around AA only
if we have a TV and card room. If this is
what is required to carry the message to
them, should we have these facilities?

On the Ligher Side
A drunk phoned police to report that thieves had been in his car. "They've stolen the dashboard, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, even the accelerator!" he cried out. However, before the police investigation could start, the phone rang a second time with the same voice came over the line. "Never mind," he said with a hiccup, "I got in the back seat by mistake."
Signs You've Got a Really Bad Hangover
1. You'd rather have a pencil poked in your eye than be exposed to sunlight.
2. Trying to gain control of the situation, you continue to tell your room to "stay still."
3. Looking at yourself in the mirror induces the same reaction as chugging a glass of fresh paint.
4. You're convinced that chirping birds are Satan's pets.
5. You set aside an entire morning to spend some quality time with your toilet.
6. You replaced the traditional praying on your knees with the more feasible praying in a fetal position.
7. The bathroom reminds you of a carnival barker shouting, "Step right up and give it whirl!"
8. All day long your motto is, "Never again."
9. You could purchase a new bike just by recycling the bottles around your bed.
10. Your natural response to "Good morning," is "Be quiet!
