Green- Green
Grass of Guyana
Thirty Two Poems By Dmitri Allicock
GREEN- GREEN GRASS OF HOME
Over the green hills where macaws fly
And under those cloudy Demerara’s sky
There is a pathway which crosses a creek
Where the tea- water runs fresh and sweet
A road follows from near the river mouth
From the coast deep into the jungle’s south
A precious highway that lead you straight
Over the Kara- Kara and to my front- gate
It is true that you really cannot return home
But it lives within no matter where you roam
The road to home of that heartstrings song
Green grass of home where I’ll always belong.
MAJESTIC KARA- KARA CREEK
Majestic Kara- Kara as old as time
Quietly flows through veins of mine
Tea water melodies of nature reigns
Purify my soul and clears my brain
Tranquil waters with freshness anew
Cashew fragrance and morning dew
Colorful songbirds birds fills the air
Such soothing sounds to my ears
The dragonfly dances and drink
Sweet water of heavenly peace I think
Twisting and turning water of no end
Warm memories and forever my friend.
MY OLD LOUVER PANES
From the old louver panes that I flip
With a gentle twist of my grip
I felt the cool breeze on my face
The echoes of dear home is the place
From the old louver panes, I still see
The sky blue and the waving trees
I can hear the birds singing so sweet
And sounds of the children in the street
From the old louver panes, I still see
The lush outside where I wanted to be
The old louver window panes of the past
And the smooth flip of memories to last.
THE FORK IN THE ROAD
A fork in the road where the journey lay
A choice we must make each & every day
We may climb the highest mountain
And drink from the purest fountain.
A fork in the road where the journey lay
A choice we must make each & every day
Those actions we take in moving forward
Learning from mistakes of stepping backward.
A fork in the road where the journey lay
A choice we must make each & every day
Two roads that may look like the same
But vastly different, depending on your aim.
A fork in the road where the journey lay
A choice we must make each & every day
The choice of the conscious mind
At the fork in the road where our pathway winds.
BY THE PALING GATE
A dear conversation by the gate
The spoken words given straight
Perhaps new horizons to explore
Where life riches might be stored
A closed gate, but able to swing
Colors of what the new day brings.
THE FLIPSIDE OF LIFE
On the flip side of precious life
There is sunshine after the rain
And there is some pain before gain.
On the flip side of sacred life
There is hope for me and you
And our dreams will come true.
On the flip side of a blessed life
Live a life with no regrets
And life is as good as it gets.
On the flip side of a good life
Live with harmony and you will be okay
And make the most of this beautiful day.
On the flip side this beautiful life
To learn is to live
And to have peace and to love is to give.
BENEATH THE ETE SHADE
When the place gets hot
I will take you to a spot
Where the shade is fine
For you to sit and recline
A macaw for you to see
And gentler for you to be
Beneath this charming shade
Where cool and cozy is made.
SAYING HELLO
Let’s go for bike ride
Just you and me, I said
A ride in the countryside sun
And I’m sure will be lots of fun
I can ride fast but will go slow
Feeling the coastal breeze blow
Under a lovely shade from the sky
And say hello to the folks passing by.
SOFT-FEATHERY- ORANGE TOUCH
[Cock- of- the- rock-[Rupicola rupicola]
Hello again my shy little friend
I once more say I love you much
And love from my heart, I send
Your soft- feathery- orange touch
Beautiful is your half-moon crest
Your sweet chirps, I want to hear
Indeed you’re one of Guyana’s finest
Your thrill that tells me that you’re near.
RUSTY OLD TRUCK
A truck that can no longer sing a song
Now rusting in the shade all day long
A time when all things made will decay
But is still able to attract a boy and play
His realm of pure imagination and free
His dreams come alive of what it can be
Dreaming of climbing up the tallest hill
Winds on his face and the vibrating thrill
Holding on the wheel, making the turns
Blowing the horn as this little boy learns.
GREEN LAND OF HOME Green is the color of lush
Nurtured by the heavens not in a rush
Green is my Guyana where seeds are sown
My roots, the world, that I have known
Trees of fruits, medicines, and air so clean
Green is my home of such beauty to be seen.
SIMPLE & KIND
Do a kind favor today
Show a humble gesture right away
Say a few sympathetic words to someone
Be proud of a modest act you have done
Show empathy in each and every action
Make humility a core part of your life’s celebration
Integrate kindness in everything you do
And one day soon it will all come back to you.
ALONG THE TRAIL
The trail is rough, dangerous and is no stroll
But it is the journey that is great for the soul
A tough, and winding path going somewhere
The true success is in the travel getting there
The glory of the climb, where songbirds sing
The adventure & wisdom that the trail brings.
LITTLE BLUE BUCKET
Two little boys with the countryside view
A chore of fetching water that I once knew
Blessed are those who are humble & meek
Dipping that blue plastic bucket in the creek
And that rite of passage of a Guyana’s track
The early lessons of life and a strong back.
AS SWEET AS YOU
Fruits of Guyana of different skins
Some of them with delicious juice within
Oranges, mangoes, fat poke of different size
Sugar apple, granadilla that catches my eyes
Kinda reminds me of the world of people too
Some may be sour but some as sweet as you.
HOLD ON TO THOSE REINS
When it seems like you can’t win the fight
And there is no help in sight,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When it feels like there is nothing to give
And you are losing the will to live,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When it is dark and grey
And there is no sunshine to brighten your day,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When there is no one by your side
And you are swimming against the tide
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When you stumble and fall
Just get up again and stand stall,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When obstacles block your path
And there is confusion in the aftermath,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
When you are emotionally and physically whipped
And you are beginning to slip,
Stay strong and hold on to the reins of life
Because the light will shine in the morning sun
Renewing hope before it’s done.
MY YELLOW SKY
Answers, all around
Joy of living, found
Take that chance
With one simple glance
To live and to learn
Our Earth Mother’s space
Existing within realm of grace.
LILY WHITE ANTHURIUM My budding anthurium pearly white
Beaming in the sunlight so bright
Sheltering under my coconut tree
And opening slowly for you and me
I will water you and take special care
And thank for you for being here
My butterfly love and garden lure
Dearest lily white anthurium so pure.
A RACEME OF PARADISE
The color abundant & bright
A plant that sings in the light
Blooms like a bird in the skies
Buds from my Bird of Paradise
Green, yellow and orange glow
The paradise a butterfly knows
Raceme of soft petals in the sun
I admire but would not pick one.
SCENT OF MY GARDENIAS
Lovely gardenias for you to see
Such memories it brings to me
A fragrance so strong in the air
Rapture if its ambience everywhere
Gardenias of that romantic power
Scent of my graden and sweet flower.
CRAB SLIDE
A crab on the seashore
Looking for a little more
Walking funny to the side
Stepping like the electric slide.
TO SCHOOL WE GO
My sister is sweet like dove
And fills my heart with love
Her smile, the sun of the day
That joy which will always stay
She treats me very well & I like
And to school we go on my bike.
A SOFT WHISPER
Takes a seat in the world of leaves
Should I stay for while? Or shall I flee?
And your questions will be answered
With a soft whisper, heard from the trees.
BARTICA’S KING
The fowlcock sings in the early dawn
A brand new day as life moves along
The crow of a Bartica backyard king
Sounds of home and countryside thing.
OLD WITCHES GATHER-[Smooth- billed Anis]
Hooked beaks -old witches assemble in Georgetown
For delicious insects, frogs and a hearty chow down
Ooo- leek! Ooo- leek, is their song that they will sing
Clumsy & stumbling -ugly birds, as they do their thing.
A FAMILY THAT WORKS TOGETHER-
STAY TOGETHER
Working together
And we strive as one
We all have a role to play
Working for a brighter day
So you must never lose heart
For we all must play our part.
BAREFOOT IN THE SUN
I often think of my childhood past
Barefoot and running in the grass
Laughing and playing in a stream
That now seems like only a dream
I close my eyes, but I can still see
Barefoot in the sun, young and free.
THUNDER OF DIVINITY
Potaro escarpment 822 ft. tall
Guyana’s mighty Kaieteur Falls
The thunder that never ceases
Gushing world of divinity reaches
Essequibo waters of river and creek
Tumbling to that coastal bosom it seek.
A NEW DAWN(Highlands of Guyana)
On a clear day I may see tomorrow
But today is mine that I can’t borrow
That welcome my dreams as it unfold
A day that is full of promise for my soul
To live, to love and cherish before it is gone
As the rising sun give birth to this brand new dawn.
THE EYES OF A CHILD
Look into these eyes and you will see
The colors as bright as they can be
The eyes of a child so full with love
Softer than the clouds sailing above
Look into these eyes and you will see
An enchanted garden, pure and free
Flowers kissed by butterfly, one by one
Blossoms of joy and laughter in the sun
Look into these eyes and you will see
Those glistening eyes that holds the key
A world of sweet innocence to ponder
Magical glow of a realm full of wonder
Look into these eyes and you will see
A beacon of the future for you and me
The eyes of a child is a splendid sight
A glint from the Heavens, shining bright.
SITTING IN MY GARDEN
I like to sit in my garden, listening to my chimes
And think about life, my blessings and the times
I love to watch the flowers in the morning dew
The gently sun peeping shyly in the sky of blue
I like to listen to the birds with their happy songs
Feeling the cool breeze, I could sit all morning long
Watching the wings of butterflies dancing in the sun
I find that to sit in my garden, is a whole lot of fun.
REMEMBER TO REMEMBER
[Yours Truly]
Forget those things that made you sad
And think of things that made you glad
Remember to remember to always smile
Even if you should forget for a little while
Remember your love ones who had to leave
The fabric of life’s joyful and the sad weave
Remember to remember them shining bright
Those flowers of your garden, red and white
Remember to count your blessings each day
Of this, your amazing journey along the way.
And to look, each day, into the horizon blue
That blue yonder mystery that lives within you.
