Guidance News – April 2014

ACT/SAT Test Prep: Please check the guidance page of the GHS website at www.greenlocalschools.org for the most up-to-date information regarding ACT and SAT prep opportunities. ACT/SAT: All college bound juniors should take an ACT or SAT test before the end of the school year. Test dates, registration deadlines, and the websites for registering for these tests can be found on the GHS Guidance website and at www.actstudent.org and www.collegeboard.com. Scholarships: Many local organizations have provided scholarship opportunities for 2014 GHS seniors. All scholarships are posted on the GHS web-site, and the hard copies of many applications are in the guidance office. Seniors are reminded to frequent the office to access these applications and submit them by the deadlines. Senior Awards & Final Transcripts: During the last week of April, seniors will complete a senior exit survey during the school day through an online survey. They will be asked at that time where they wish to have their final transcripts sent. If they are uncertain of the college they plan to attend, or employer who is to receive their transcript, they must notify the guidance office when they make this decision in order to have their final transcript sent anywhere after graduation. The senior exit survey will be the vehicle used by the counselors to gather scholarship and award information. Students are respon-sible for providing documentation of scholarship awards to the guidance office to have their photo displayed in the academic awards showcase. Lists of seniors earning awards such as the Honors Diploma, Wall of Fame, and Distinguished Scholar will be posted during late April in the guidance office. Students are encouraged to check the accuracy of these lists as a double check prior to the May 27th assem-bly. Invitations for the awards assembly are mailed to students who will be called to the stage for any recognition; however, all seniors are encouraged to attend the assembly. The purpose of the invitation is to notify parents that their son/daughter will be receiving an award that evening. The Senior Awards Assembly will begin at 7:30pm in the GHS Auditorium on May 27th. AP Testing: Advanced Placement tests will be administered during the weeks of May 5th and May 12th. Students enrolled in any AP class during the 2013-14 school year will test. Fees for AP tests were due in February. If students have not paid, they need to do so as soon as possible. Please remind your sons/daughters about the pre-registration sessions they signed up for at the end of April. Schedule Change Request Guidelines: The last day of school, June 6th, will be the deadline to initiate schedule changes. Students and parents will receive a confirmation of scheduled classes in late May. Families should use this notification to review their student’s schedule and request changes. A com-plete explanation of this policy can be found in the fall 2014 Curriculum and Course Description Guide. Incoming freshmen receive a hard copy of this guide; an updated electronic copy is available on the guidance website: http://www.greenlocalschools.org/CurriculumGuides.aspx

Parent teacher conferences are on April 10, 5 – 8pm.

PSEO Meetings will be held on

April 10th at 5, 6 or 7pm.

A.C.T. Prep Classes: An Important Investment

ACT test scores are one of the most important criterion colleges use to determine admission and scholarships. To help students attain their highest possible scores, Sharon Dahlman, PhD is offering personalized, small-group sessions in the Library of Greensburg United Methodist Church, 2161 Greensburg Road, Green. Class participation and review has improved student scores as much as 8 points. Please Visit: ABrightPromise.org for review dates and registration information. Classes for the June 14 test will be held on Sundays, May 4, 18, and June 1 and 8, 2014, from 3-5 p.m. Cost is $149. Register no later than May 1 to reserve a space. Registration and class size is limited. For further questions, email [email protected] Registration information and forms are also available through the Green High School Guidance Department.

College Countdown 2014

July 30st, July 31st, and August 1st from 9:00am to 12:00pm at Green High School

Interested in taking some of the stress out of your senior year? Green High School is launching a new program

called College Countdown designed to do just that. This three day program will meet from 9 am to 12pm on

July 30th, July 31st, and August 1st at the high school. The goal of the event is to assist seniors as you

complete the following:

create resumes

solidify college/career decisions

write effective college essays for admission or scholarship

complete college applications

explore scholarship resources

GHS faculty members will host the camp to provide small group instruction and individual advising for each

participant in all of these activities. Participants can expect to produce a quality resume and a final draft of a

college essay that can be used for admission or scholarship purposes and be introduced to college/career/

scholarship resources.

To save your place at College Countdown 2014, complete the registration form below and bring a check of

$60.00 made out to Green High School by May 22nd to the guidance office. The camp will only be held if 10

or more students register and will be limited to 40 participants. Fall Athletes/Band Members are encouraged to

participate in College Countdown. Coaches/Advisors support your participation in this valuable opportunity.

The College Application Essay: All-New Fifth Edition by Sarah Myers McGinty is included in the cost of

registration and will be available for pick up at the high school in early June. Participants are encouraged to

read this prior to College Countdown. Students are also encouraged to bring a rough draft of a college essay.

Possible topics will be given to students prior to the end of school.

Spanish Club will be selling bracelets for the "Pulsera Project" (pulsera means bracelet in Spanish) on April 7-11 during

lunch. Pulseras will be sold for $5, with all profits going to the project.

Information about the "Pulsera Project" can be found on the following sites: http://www.pulseraproject.org/home

Pictures and videos can be found here: http://pulseraproject.4ormat.com/

"The Pulsera Project began in 2009 when a group of friends traveling in Nicaragua discovered a shelter for ex-street kids

in the foothills of Managua. The youths were masters of weaving pulseras (bracelets) but had little market for their art-work in Nicaragua.

Some of the friends returned home and enlisted students at two US schools to sell the youths’ pulseras. Now, three

years later, scores of young Nicaraguan artists partner with students in more than 450 US schools, weaving the art of

the pulsera into a positive and colorful force across the US and Nicaragua.

For many pulsera artists, weaving pulseras began as art therapy in shelters where they grew up. For others, the native art was passed down from previous generations. For all, pulsera weaving remains central to the stories of their lives, –

stories that they gladly share through Pulsera Project films and writings - stories that enrich our understanding of the

world.

Each pulsera takes about two hours to make, comes tagged with the picture and signature of the artist, and is woven with the rich personal history of the person who made it. When you wear a pulsera, you not only share the voice of a

young Nicaraguan, but you raise your own voice too, speaking out for opportunity, unity, and a more magical and color-ful world."

Volunteers are desperately needed to help make the

Art Expo a huge success.

The Summit County Schools Art Expo is highly

regarded for the quality of the art submitted and the

professional production of the Art Expo itself. It

takes many, many volunteer hours to prepare for and

host this event. Please consider volunteering to help

us continue to host this event at the same high level

established by our predecessors.

If you would like to volunteer to bake cookies,

catalog, hang, display, or return any of the artwork

please contact Co-chairs Lindsey

Myers and Staci Schweikert at

The Green Council of PTAs will once again host the Summit County Schools Art Expo in 2014. This will be the 13th

year that the Green Council of PTAs will organize the Summit County Schools Art Expo. Prior to 2001, the art exhibition

was organized by the Summit County PTA for forty-five years, until that organization dissolved. The Art Expo is held

annually at the Portage Lakes Career Center in Green. Approximately 550 pieces of art from students in Kindergarten

through High School, will be judged and exhibited. This year, students from 34 buildings representing 12 different

school districts in Summit County will participate in the Art Expo.

The art will be judged in the following categories: painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, ceramics, 3D and

computer generated photography.

The PLCC is open daily to the public Mondays - Thursdays 9:00am – 9:00pm and Fridays 9:00am – 2:00pm. The art

will be on display Wednesday, April 16 through Wednesday, May 7. Please note that the PLCC is closed April 18.

An Artists’ Reception and Award Ceremony will be held on Monday, April 28 from 6-8pm at the Portage Lakes Career

Center. More than 500 artists, family, and friends are expected to attend this standing-room-only event. Winners will be

recognized on stage by grade level for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, Honorable Mention and the Best of Show winners from each

grade. Kindergarten through eighth grade will be presented with a trophy. High School grades Best of Show winners will

each receive $25 from the Green Council of PTAs.
