N estled along the Fox River, only 20 minutes west of Oshkosh, a drive to Berlin will truly afford you ample opportunities to relax and
refresh in a community that cares that you’re here. Whether your interests are golf, camping along the Fox, a family day at the Aquatic Center, or maybe just a walk along the Riverside Park River Trail, you will find Berlin is a great place to live, work and play.
Golf at the beautiful Mascoutin Golf Course located just 8 minutes from Green Lake. Situated along side of the Fox River, 27 well groomed holes await to challenge golfers of all abilities.
Berlin’s accessibility to the Fox River provides ample opportunities for a leisurely day of canoeing, kayaking, boating or fishing. One of the few rivers in the world that runs north, the Fox is truly a sport enthusiast’s paradise. From Berlin, boat anywhere upstream by lockage through the renovated Eureka Locks, locally funded and operated by the Berlin Boat Club. Whether launching your boat at Berlin’s River-side Park or the Berlin Locks there is no launch fee!
Berlin’s Riverside Park, boasts one of the best camp-grounds in the county featuring waterfront sites, electricity, fire pits, baseball fields, playgrounds, fris-bee golf, volleyball courts and dump station. Enjoy the serenity of the Fox or fish from your campsite. A short walk to Berlin’s historic downtown will delight the inquisitive shopper or diner, as well as the lover of Wisconsin history.
Wildlife abounds as you bike, walk or horseback ride the Mascoutin Trail. Twelve miles of trails meander through three counties. With the trail head starting at Berlin, a quiet ride will afford you the opportunity to view deer, geese, Sandhill cranes and other critters as you bike to Ripon and Green Lake. Birdwatchers delight in tracking local and migrant species alike.
Summer events for the whole family include the Great Berlin Grill Out, Independence Day Berlin Style, Bugle Mouth Bass Fishing Tournament, the Berlin Boat Club Corn Roast, Street Cruzers Car Show and Pumpkins On The Petunias.
As the year comes to a close, the Christmas season is met in Berlin with “The Biggest Little Parade in the Valley”. Kick off the joyous Holiday Season with our lighted parade entries and marching bands. Witness the magic as over 100 trees are lit in beautiful Nathan Strong Park. Outdoor winter enthusiasts can enjoy some of the best snowmobiling trails in the county, riding all the way up the Fox River.
Lastly, when cabin fever comes your way it’s time to get out, shake off the winter blues and partake in the Wine and Beer Extravaganza. Quench your palate on wines from around the world or satisfy your taste buds on fine cuisine from local and area restaurants.

G R E E N L A K Ethe good life
Green Lake is a scenic community nestled on the shores of Wisconsin’s deepest natural inland lake. This quiet place to unwind is
only 180 miles north of Chicago and 90 minutes from Green Bay, Madison and Milwaukee, and of-fers spectacular views and on-the-water recreation for all seasons.
During the summer there is an abundance of events and lake based activities, from water and jet-skiing, to swimming, sailing, fishing, paddleboarding, camping and golfing. Taking a walk in our historic business district is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, perusing through stores while enjoying a freshly brewed cup of coffee or an ice cream by the water.
The Green Lake Conference Center offers breathtaking views of the lake and fall colors from
atop Judson Tower, as does Majestic Balloons, a hot-air balloon ride not to be missed. Enjoy the natural scenery of Green Lake from one of the many bike trails or county beaches, have a family picnic in the parks, then freshen up and welcome the evening with fresh local food served up at one of our lovely restaurants (don’t forget our Friday Fish Fry’s). Lodging opportunities abound, from charming Bed and Breakfasts in historical properties, to lake side motels, cabins and cottages. Special to Green Lake is the Heidel House Resort and Spa, which houses 3 on-property restaurants, a world class spa, swimming pools, lake side rentals, lobster bakes and pig roasts throughout the summer and, is also Travel Green Certified.
During the cooler months, you can cross country ski, snow shoe, take the kids ice-skating in the marina, or join the ice shanty villagers on the lake. For the winter adrenaline seekers, a snowmobile ride with friends on any of our groomed trails, or an ice boat lesson might open your eyes to a new fun sport.
Green Lake has many events, all which are family friendly. The summertime kicks off with the SCOW and CRAW Regattas in June, inviting all sailing aficionados. In July, join us at the lively Wednesday night concerts at Deacon Mills Park and a favorite,
our 4th of July Independence Day celebration, a true firework spectacle not to be missed. August welcomes the Green Lake Fine Arts Show and our Green Lake County Fair. In September we host the Wisconsin State Chili Cookoff, the 13dot1 Marathon, and our ever famous Harvest Fest, drawing thou-sands of visitors for the weekend. Throughout the year, you can indulge in the arts with a performance at the historic and beautiful Thrasher Opera House, on the National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to check the calendar of events for all of the details. Visit Green Lake and live “the Good Life”.

–Maddie Kelly, Class of ‘11
Since 1858, the town of Markesan, once known as Granville, has boasted an impressive his-tory, including claims to having been the third
richest city in the nation. Markesan’s intriguing past of missing gold, murder, and love of the land can be experienced by visiting the Grand River Valley Museum and Train Depot. The Grand River winds through town, dressing up the city with nature and wildlife. Take a leisurely walk through our downtown city streets and discover wonderfully nostalgic Victorian homes as well as unique stores. Venture to the countryside to find horse-drawn buggies and distinct craftsmanship, prepared by the large Amish population of the area. Explore their unique lifestyle by visiting their old-fashioned stores filled with hand made goods (see pg 40 & 41 for more details).
An active approach to experiencing Markesan might involve fishing in Little Green Lake or Lake Puckaway for walleye, bass, perch, bluegill or muskie. Hunters and snowmobilers will find plentiful game and excellent trails. Come for the day and attend one of our many fun family events: The Fire Department breakfast or brat fry, the Antique Car and Vintage Snowmobile Show, June Dairy Days, Heritage Days at the Grand River Valley Museum, Christmas Homespun Holidays Celebration, the Markesan Garden Walk and Winterfest (calendar on pg 8).
Markesan’s motto of “a grand community” is a fitting description for this wonderful place on the Grand River. The fertile agricultural land remains a driving force behind the abundant family farms as well as the canning industry. An exceptional state-of-the-art school offers a modern and healthy environment for learning, demonstrating the commitment to our youth and their future. The Markesan library is filled with events for children and adults, becoming also a wonderful resource for those looking to continue their education. All of this, coupled with the presence of businesses, medical facilities, financial institutions and core public services create a priceless quality of life which we are proud to have and extend to our visitors. Come to Markesan to enjoy life.

T he friendly and inviting city of Ripon is an active community set among historic buildings and well- preserved architecture
from the late 19th century. City streets are dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses known as Painted Ladies. The bustling historic downtown
features a variety of businesses in buildings whose architecture dates back to the 1860s. Take the walking tour of our city center to fully enjoy our beautiful architectural history.
The Friday Night Concert Series at the Village Green is a summertime favorite. Cookie Daze, is a wonderful family festival featuring crafts, games, kid-made rockets and, of course, cookies! During Septemberfest we celebrate the beauty of our fall season with live music, the Watson Street car and motorcycle show, a charity sponsored dog walk, local food vendors, and other fun filled activities for the whole family to enjoy (don’t miss the fantastic Beechwood Farm corn maze in northern Ripon with hidden trails on 15 acres of corn!). The beloved Dickens of a Christmas weekend kicks off the holidays on the first weekend in December. Start the Friday evening off with the warmth of hot cider or hot chocolate, caroling, horse-drawn carriage rides, and snack on roasted chestnuts while viewing living scenes of days gone by in our downtown storefront windows known as Living Windows (Friday night). Saturday features Breakfast with Santa for the kids, Christmas Shopping throughout our unique stores, an Annual Quilt Show, Enchanted Forest, and a holiday Tour of Homes.
Ripon holds a special place in our nation’s history: The Little White Schoolhouse, built in 1853, is the birthplace of the Republican Party, and a National Historic Landmark. This quaint and charming building witnessed the creation of a national movement that began on March 20, 1854. The Little White Schoolhouse is open for visitors to admire
antique artifacts, to learn more about Ripon, and to understand what school life was like for children in the 1850s.
Ripon College, a nationally recognized private liberal arts and sciences school, founded in 1851, flows into the community with buildings dating back to the 19th century. The college provides cultural and sporting events open for everyone to enjoy. Renowned guest speakers visit the campus, and we are graced with performances by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and brilliant productions by the Ripon College Theatre Department.
While visiting Ripon, make sure you explore our parks and trails (for walking, running, biking or cross country skiing), stop in at Rippin’ Good Cookies and sample some of their tasty selections at their outlet store. Visitors may also want to catch a movie at the historic Campus Cinema, founded by Ben Marcus in 1935. Ripon’s Vines and Rushes Winery is a must-stop for wine enthusiasts and those interested Wisconsin’s agri-tourism.
These are just a few of the wonderful opportunities and fun times awaiting you in Ripon. Come. Find out why Ripon is the ideal place to live, work, play, and prosper.
Be sure to check the calendar of events on page 8 to learn about all of the fun things happening in Ripon.

}} Best reason to come to Green Lake country? “the abundance of undisturbed nature, the amazing skies and sunsets, and the fantastic birdwatching.” (Linda)
V i s i t G r e e n L a k e C o u n t r y, W I32
BIRDWATCHINGin Green Lake Country
G reen Lake Country is blessed by its wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife, and many good birding locations have trails and are open to
public access. Depending on the time of year, some places will vary considerably in what birdlife might be present, while other sites might provide great opportunities to find birds during any season. In general, the best time of year for birdwatching is spring and summer – especially April through July – when migrants are passing through, or individuals are engaged in territorial displays and breeding activities.
Over 260 bird species have been found in the area, including a nice variety of waterfowl, hawks and owls, woodpeckers, thrushes, sparrows, warblers and finches. Some of the favorites include Common Loon, American White Pelican, Wild Turkey, American Woodcock, Pileated Woodpecker, Scarlet Tanager, and Indigo Bunting. In winter, one can sometimes encounter Rough-legged Hawk, Snowy Owl, Northern Shrike, Snow Bunting, and both crossbills. Some of the unusual or rare birds that have been found here have been Iceland Gull, Yellow Rail, Snowy Plo-ver, Summer Tanager, Carolina Wren, Bohemian Waxwing and Harris’s Sparrow.
Starting relatively close to the lake, there are a number of Green Lake Conservancy sites that can provide a good birdwatching experience. One of the best is Sunnyside Conservancy, which is located along Silver Creek Inlet (off of Lakeview Dr.), and contains several lagoons and about two miles of trails. Other conservancy hiking areas include Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail, both of which are located within the Green Lake Conference Center and overlook the lake. Norwegian Bay Conservancy is another excellent place to go, and has a long boardwalk that extends through a marsh to the shore of Norwegian Bay. More information about these and other conservancy sites can be found at the website: greenlakeconservancy.org
A little further from the lake are two very large state-owned properties that can provide wonderful birding opportuni-ties. One is the White River Wildlife Area (located north of Princeton and west of Berlin), and the other is Grand River Wildlife Area (just west of Kingston). Another good option is the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, which follows an aban-doned railroad right-of-way between Swamp and St. Marie Roads. All of these sites are marked on the maps.

Berlin is home to the Mascoutin Golf Course. Some 300 years ago, fire-worshipping Indians lived in the Mascoutin Village just south of Berlin. It was in this gently rolling setting that E. Law-rence Packard carved out a magnificent 18-hole championship golf course through century old trees. The original Red and White nines opened for play in 1976 and the Blue nine opened in 1999. All 27 holes appeal to men, women and junior golfers. (27 holes)■ for more information call 920.361.2360 or visit www.mascoutingolf.com
Golf information courtesy of Jason Mansmith
A visit to Green Lake Country for golf lovers is simply a must. Four golf courses provide 81 holes, in which golfers will be
challenged with breath taking layouts, rolling green hills, all cut through the Green Lake Country area.

HISTORY BUFFS
T here are many small Amish businesses in the south east part of Green Lake County, as well as businesses supporting the Amish heritage. The
Markesan and Kingston/Dalton Historical Societies can provide the visitor with in depth information on where these settlers came from, their traditions and customs and how they have integrated into their neighboring communities, as well as what trades they are known for (woodworking, bak-ing, cheese making, greenhouses to name a few).
Because we support and embrace the heritage of our Amish neighbors, we kindly ask visitors to please slow down and show courtesy to horse-drawn wagons and buggies as well as respect the privacy and traditions of these families so everyone remains safe while traveling in our area.
Amish Settlement in Green Lake Country
Heritage Tourism means visiting our small, quasi~rural towns, meeting a local volunteer and engaging in a wonderful conversation with someone who is passionate about our past and is eager to share
our stories with you.
By seeing photos of an old quarry, or holding the tools workers used, we understand their challenges, we put ourselves in their everyday lives, we imagine what their dreams must have been like. By learning how a butter churner works, to seeing doctors utensils of the early 1900’s, to admiring elegant Victorian gowns and porcelain plates, or laughing at images through a stereoscope, you have the opportunity to leave the land of today and enter the world of yesterday. It’s “Edutainment” at its best.
