A PV System is an arrangement of components designed to supply usable electric power for a any purpose, using the Sun as the energy source.

Any size system is possible depending on requirementsPV systems are modular and can be expanded over timeMany types of configuration are possible for e.g. Grid-Tied(Works in conjunction with main supply) or Off-Grid(Uses batteries a storage mechanism that would be charged during the day and discharged or used during the evenings) or a combination of both.

ADVANTAGES:Environmentally friendly method of electricity production, zero pollution.SilentMaintenance freeLong term electricity generation, minimum 25 yearsAbundant and free energy source(The Sun)Ideal for remote locations where there is no GridEase of installation

Energy produced by the PV system

is used to optimize self-consumption.

The excess energy is used to

recharge the batteries.

Afternoon

@

When the batteries are fully charged and the system is already meeting self-consumption requirements, excess energy is fed into the power grid.

Evening

@

Once the sun has set, the system automatically switches to energy from the batteries.

Night

@

If the battery capacity is insufficient to meet own consumption requirements, electricity is then obtained from the public network.

Solar pumping systems are self contained pumping systems that can be installed in any location that does not require a convention electrical energy source such as the Grid or a generator.

The are many types and sizes of Solar pump each with its own application. Total Dynamic Head from 10m-350m and flow rates up to 70m3 depending on pump type e.g. Helical = Large Head/Low Flow Rate and Centrifugal = High Flow Rate/Smaller Heads

Solar pumping systems include all the required equipment including PV panel array, Control and Protection, mount-ing systems(roof/ground) and cabling to complete the full installation

ADVANTAGES:Environmentally friendly method of pumping, zero pollution.SilentAlmost maintenance freeLong term electricity generation, minimum 25 yearsAbundant and free energy source (the sun)Ideal for remote locations where there is no GridEase of installation

Packaged radiant floor heating system whereby warm water is pumped through Polyethylene tubes (manufactured to ISO 1234 standards, with SABS approval) arranged in such a manner as to distribute heat quickly and evenly through a building.

Tubes are spaced between 150 and 200 mm to enable lowered input requirements. We install 33 to 50% more tube than traditional/ competitive systems.

The heated water is transported through the tubes which conduct heat into the floor slab / screed. The resulting warm floor then radiates heat into the room, heating all solid objects such as walls, ceilings, furnishings and people in the same natural manner that the sun heats the planet.

The tubes are connected by flow and return lines to a distribution (manifold) panel which usually contains the system's heat source and circulating pump.

The simplicity of the system is such that it can be easily controlled both as to temperature and time, resulting in optimum energy efficiency and low running costs.

Heating zones can be controlled manually. Individual room thermostats provide greater control flexibility and can be added on request.

INSTALLATION ON TOP OF THE CONCRETE SLABThe tubing can be installed on top of the concrete slab and just be covered with screed before the final finish is installed. The screed thickness should be no less than 35mm to cover the tubing sufficiently for tiled floors and 40mm for carpeted and laminated wood floors. It is advisable to install insulation below the concrete slab to limit heat loss The insulation would be placed on top of the DPC plastic sheeting with the concrete cast directly onto the insulation material.

INSTALLATION WITH INSULATION ON TOP OF THE CONCRETE SLABThis installation method is the most efficient way of heating as the heat losses are optimally minimized. The slab however needs to be cast 90-100mm lower than the finished floor level (one standard brick height lower than normal). The insulation is installed on top of the concrete slab and a foam insulation strip of 100mm high is nailed to the walls, whereby the insulation on the floor will limit heat loss into the concrete slab. A steel-reinforcing mat is laid onto the insulation and the heat tubing is fixed to this steel mesh. A screed of approximately 60mm is cast containing the tubing and reinforcing mesh The heating system will have a faster reaction time using this method of installation, as no heat is lost into the concrete slab.

DIGITAL PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATSThese thermostats give you the option of dividing your days into segments and allowing you to set the ideal temperature for that particular time of day. As an example you can program the thermostats to reduce the desired temperature from 22°c down to 17°c during the day when no one is at home. This amounts to significant reduction in energy costs.

STANDARD ANALOGUE THERMOSTATHere normally through a small dial, you set the thermostat to your specific required temperature. This desired temperature is then static and will remain at that chosen level as long as the system is turned on or until a different temperature is chosen.

HEAT PUMPHeat pumps are often used as the primary heat source due to their low energy (electricity) usage. A heat pump extracts energy from the surrounding free air and transfers the energy to the water that is pumped through the floor tubing. The heat pump saves up to 70% of the operat-ing cost when compared to electric elements.

Solar Geysers and Heat Pumps

Page 11: Green Leaf Presentation - Email · Rainwater harvesting is a way of saving the rainwater which would normally flow off a roof and down the drain, and using it in a number of applications

A small pump is used to transfer the water through out the system.

The solar collector gathers energy from the sun (Thermal and infrared).

The heat pipe transfers the heat to the manifold by a very simple method. The copper heat pipe is hollow and contains a small amount of fluid. The hollow centre of the heat pipe is a vacuum, so that even at tempera-tures of around 30C the fluid will vaporize (boil). The vapour rises to the tip (condenser) of the heat pipe where the heat is transferred to the water flowing through the manifold. This heat transfer causes the vapour to condense and flow back down the heat pipe where the process is once again repeated.

The heated water is then exchanged in the storage tank and the process is repeated until the water is at the desired temperature.

The Controller will control and monitor the process as well as us a back up element when needed.

A heat pump extracts heat from the ambient air surrounding it enabling it to heat the refrigerant which is then compressed causing it to get even hotter.

This is then run through a heat exchanger where this thermal energy is drawn off to heat the water and then the refrigerant is allowed to expand again, thus cooling it down and enabling it again to absorb heat from the surrounding air.

So electricity is only used to run a fan and compressor and the heat

Energy is provided indirectly by the sun.

Rainwater harvesting is a way of saving the rainwater which would normally flow off a roof and down the drain, and using it in a number of applications ranging from garden irrigation to in house usage for toilets, washing machines and even (with extra filtration), human consumption.

By harvesting and utilising rainwater we lower our demand for municipal water, reducing our dependence on dams and water treatment plants.

Utilising rainwater reduces our monthly municipal water bill.

Rainwater is a safe clean source of water.

Rainwater contains no chemicals added by the water treatment plants. It is softer and naturally pure making it perfect for your garden.

FACTSA single person in the average suburban home may use up to 170-200L a day within the house on toilets, showers, baths, laundry, washbasins and drinking etc.70% (+-120L) of this water is Grey Water. This water is usually disposed of into the sewer system or a septic tank and us actually perfectly reusable. This water can be recycled and used for watering gardens and flushing toilets (with filtration).Recycling of grey water is great way to save and reuse majority of house hold water with a simple system that is easily installed in new and existing homes.

ADVANTAGESLower the usage of fresh drinking water for garden and toilet use.Lower the strain on the municipal sewer system.Reduced energy use and chemical pollution from treatment plants.Restore groundwater instead of discharging to sewer system.Recycling of water that would be otherwise wasted water (Grey Water) for reuse in the garden and for flushing toilets.Lower water bills.

Water is collected and fed from bath, showers and laundry.

This water is filtered to separate debris (hair, etc).

Water is stored in an underground 200l tank, this is the basic system size.

A submersible pump is fitted in the tank and used to pump the water to required areas such as garden sprinkler, wash bay, toilets, laundry and other areas. May require extra filtration and process for use in certain areas.

The water is also disinfected before being pumped out of the tank using a chlorinator.

This is the basic grey water recycling unit and system, larger more complex systems are available on request for commercial applications.

The Bio-Mite uses both Anaerobic, Aerobic, settling and disinfection for the treatment of sewage. Solids are retained and digested in a septic tank anaerobically, and the septic tank reduces the BOD load by up to 40%.

The pre digested effluent (black water) passes to the bio reactor where bubbled air is introduced to facilitate the aerobic action to further clean the effluent. The aerobic bacteria remove dissolved and suspended biological matter to clean the water further.

Settling and disinfection through ozonation cleans the water which is available for discharge.
