About the Awards
"Sustainability for Business Perpetuity"! With this in mind, Frost & Sullivan launched the ‘Green Manufacturing
Excellence Awards’ in 2009. The objective of this award platform is to propagate the concept of sustainable
development and assist companies in adopting these concepts through assessments, feedback, benchmarking
and sharing of best practices. The annual cycle ends with recognizing companies, who have been the front
runners in the sustainable development journey on a national platform.
Organizations that have successfully embarked on their journey to sustainable development demonstrate
meaningful initiatives that mitigate long-term sustainability risks and bring in business benefits. Such
organizations have built a competitive advantage by adopting Green Manufacturing Practices and become the
preferred choice of consumers and the investor community. They will pioneer growth in the next decade and
take up the daunting task of innovating, designing and manufacturing more environmentally sound products
and embracing cleaner technologies. These will be the Leaders in Green Manufacturing!

Assessment Model and Methodology
The assessment process is designed to evaluate the progress
made by an organization towards identifying and
implementing sustainable manufacturing practices in its
operations and supply chain. Systematic identification and
effective implementation of systems towards mitigating short
and long-term sustainability risks will be assessed. Goal
setting and projects deployment for each of the 10
parameters will be evaluated in addition to assessing the
long-term objective of this initiative and its business links.
Existence of a structured approach towards systematic
deployment of sustainability goals in the organization will be
evaluated.
Initiatives taken and results achieved by organizations
towards Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of Materials, Water, Energy, Emissions, Effluents, Waste and Products and
Services will be assessed. The assessment process will also be used to understand the efforts made by
organizations towards study of Bio-diversity and its conservation, creation of a safe workplace for employees
and impact on the society on account of the plant’s operations. Efforts towards developing a green supply
chain will be also be reviewed.
Frost & Sullivan’s Green Manufacturing Excellence Model is built on 11 parameters of evaluation. The model
is built on a total of 1300 points and each parameter has a different weightage based on its importance.
Evaluation criteria and checkpoints have been pre-defined to build objectivity into the assessment process.
The assessment process will conclude
with a feedback session on the strengths
and opportunities for improvement.
Comparative analysis with other
companies in the country will also be
shared. A report highlighting areas of
improvements across the parameters of
evaluation will be submitted to the
manufacturing facility.

Winner’s Speak
On-site assessment and sharing of best practices session provided enough learning opportunities to further
strengthen our USLP program. GMEA assessment criteria were quite comprehensive and objective. Also it
was carried out by a team of experts with in-depth knowledge on the subject. On-site assessment was a good
learning experience for the Factory Team - Hindustan Unilever Limited
GMEA assessment is carried out impartially by an eminent team in detail. Auditors have given lot of inputs,
which have prompted us to go beyond the boundaries in all the areas they have audited. We were able to
identify the gaps in the existing systems and the way other industries are working on these aspects.
Accordingly immediate actions are initiated to improve upon these fronts - Bajaj Auto Limited
“We find GMEA site assessment scientific and covering major dimensions of sustainability and the feedback
report provided the opportunities for improvement. The assessment and report has given us insight of our
location, assessed on a scientific approach in a structured way and also provided a comparative standing of
our location with other industries. GMEA enhances the awareness on the key sustainability factors and
provides area specific opportunities for improvement. This will assist our organizations in cost control,
conservation of natural resources, improvement in EHS performance and sustainability of the business”
- Hindustan Zinc Limited
“It was an excellent experience for us. This is an excellent initiative ... Proud to feel that we are a part of this
initiative” - Kansai Nerolac Paints Limited
GMEA is a very systematic assessment model, which is totally free from any personal biases and prejudices. I
will say it is an excellent process of assessment. We could learn areas of improvements, learn the best practices
being followed by other industries, identify the gaps and have made plans on how to move ahead towards
Excellence - United Phosphorus Limited
“GMEA assessment helped us to know the present efforts made by our organization towards Green
manufacturing. Outcomes and information about market leaders (in this category) will be used for further
refinement of our systems. This assessment also helped increasing the awareness towards green manufacturing
practices in the organization - Gujarat Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (Amul - Mother Dairy)
The assessment by GMEA was an eye opener. It gave us lot of inputs for improving productivity without
adversely affecting environment. It generated awareness on the vital subject of sustainable growth thru mapping
of raw material , energy, water consumption and subsequent suitable measures to be taken for wastage
minimization, conservation of natural resources, pollution minimization, health and safety, etc. - The Supreme
