As the American revolution and industrial revolution, there

occurred a new revolution in the 20th century, that dramatically

changed the field of agriculture, and this revolution is known as

the green revolution

Page 3: Green revolution an over view

Green revolution was a period when the

productivity of global agriculture increased drastically as a result

of new advances, which results in high

productivity

Synthetic herbicides and pesticides

Chemical fertilizers

HISTORY OF GREEN REVOLUTION

Norman BorlaugHe was the first to found the green revolution. He

conducted a research in Mexico in 1940 and developed a high yield

varieties of wheat

In 1965 the Indira Gandhi govt. took a

major step in agriculture. Dr.

M.S.Swaminathan, father of green

revolution led this revolution as a project

ELEMENTS OF GREEN REVOLUTION

Expansion of farming areas

Green revolution continued with quantitative expansion of farmlands

Artificial monsoonThere had to be two monsoons per

year, one would be the natural monsoon and the other an artificial

monsoon

Multiple croppingInstead of growing a single crop per

year, the field should use to grow two or more crop through out the

year

High yield cropsSpecially designed crop is

developed to produce more overall yield

Page 6: Green revolution an over view

Requirements for green revolution

High yielding varieties of

seed

Chemical fertilizers

Modern agricultural machinery

Advanced irrigational technology

Rural electrification

Soil testing and soil conservation

ADVANTAGES OF GREEN REVOLUTION

Page 8: Green revolution an over view

It It made it possible to grow more crops on roughly the same amount of land with a similar amount of

effort

Page 9: Green revolution an over view

The farmers of rural areas learned new techniques for building irrigation systems to bring

water to their fields

Page 10: Green revolution an over view

Developing countries become self

sufficient in food grains and hence

resulted in decreased poverty level

Page 11: Green revolution an over view

India transformed itself from a

starving nation to an exporter of

food

Page 12: Green revolution an over view

The crop yield is increased three times

than the earlier

Page 13: Green revolution an over view

It boosted industrial growth, created job opportunities and

improved the quality of life of the

people

Page 14: Green revolution an over view

It created plenty of job not only for agricultural

workers but also industrial workers by

the creation of factories and hydro electric

powers

Page 15: Green revolution an over view

It has changed the attitude of people

towards agricultural work as

now it has wide scope

Page 16: Green revolution an over view

It increases the greenery of environment

It brings rain in proper time It reduces the pollution level It minimizes the effect of global

warming It minimizes the effect of soil

erosion Floods can be controlled to

some extent

Some other advantages on environment

Page 17: Green revolution an over view

Limitations of green revolution

Page 18: Green revolution an over view

Even if the green revolution is impressive, it was not 100%success

the poorer farmers can not achieve yield as high as those with better access to water, fertilizer and land

Lead to reduction in the organic matter

in the soil

A few states showed best

result in green revolution

New hybrids required use of

chemical fertilizers and

pesticides

The new farming

techniques, has caused pollution

of natural resources

Un employment among un educated farmers
