Veolia uses ice to ‘power’ its cooling and chilled water system

Veolia in Baltimore Unknown to many and invisible beneath

the streets and bridges above, there lies a labyrinth of steam pipes that has silently warmed and cooled some of Baltimore’s premier institutions and businesses for over 30 years. Acquired by Veolia in 2007, the district energy system leverages renewable “Green Steam”, originating from a waste-to-energy plant, to supply its network. From hospitals, commercial buildings, government facilities, schools to recreational facilities, Veolia supplies steam, hot water and chilled water to customers within the central business district and in Harbor East, an upscale, mixed-use development incorporating several high-rise hotels, apartments, and retail and office buildings.

“Green Steam” benefitsOver 50 percent of the steam delivered to customers is “Green Steam” – steam produced by converting post-recycled household waste

at Wheelabrator’s nearby waste-to-energy plant. Through this continued supply agreement, Veolia is reducing Baltimore’s total greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 47,000 tons per year – the equivalent of removing 8,400 cars from the road. The use of renewable fuel also helps the State of Maryland meet its goal of generating 20 percent of its energy from Tier 1 renewable resources by 2022.

Keeping the city ‘cool’ with iceVeolia supplies several buildings in the downtown Baltimore business corridor with reliable cooling and chilled water services – offering a cost-effective alternative to replacing, operating and maintaining in-house cooling equipment. As one of the largest ice thermal storage systems in the country, Veolia’s innovative system uses ice, made using off-peak electricity at night, to augment electrical chilling capacity during the day. By reducing electricity use during peak demand, Veolia is able to take pressure off the electrical grid when power usage is at its highest, while also helping to reduce costs for customers.
