OLD AGE• Old Age and the aging

procedure are a biological phenomenon which has its own dynamism, largely beyond ones command.

• Old age brings a whole new gamut of changes in an individual’s life.

• These changes range from simple changes such as a mild memory loss or forgetfulness to more serious changes such as changes in the functioning of the brain and nervous systems.

Page 3: Green tea and its benefits – old age

CHANGES DURING OLD AGE• Heart's blood vessels tend to

accumulate calcium and plaque, the cholesterol-containing material that narrows vessels and causes a heart attack. This process may lead to abnormally leaky or narrowed valves.

• The kidneys' ability to filter the blood diminishes with time

• Joint flexibility and range of motion tend to diminish because of age-related injury ("wear-and-tear") and degeneration

• The brain often atrophies (shrinks). This effect is particularly prominent in the cortex, the part of the brain handling language, speech, memory and other complex functions.

GREEN TEA• Green tea is made solely from the leaves

of Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing.

• Green tea originates in China.• Green tea contains chemicals known as

antioxidants, particularly the compound known as EGCG Epigallocatechin gallate that may help prevent cell damage in the body.

• Green tea contains antioxidants

RESEARCH- I Phase• Type of study: A experimental study• Selection of Area: Research was conducted in

Puducherry (Lawspet, Govindasalai, MG road, Veerampattinam)

• Objectives: To analyse the effect of green tea on selected disorders of selected samples.

• Selection of Samples: Obese (25), hypercholesteremic (15) patients and diabetic (20) old aged were selected.

Green tea (8gm) was supplemented to the samples for 40 days and changes were recorded.

• Qualitative and Quantitative tests on green tea were also conducted

OLD AGE AND OBESITY

Page 9: Green tea and its benefits – old age

OLD AGE AND OBESITY• Many older people in developing countries are

overweight or obese.• The prevalence is increasing as more people reach old

age already overweight.• Obesity in old age is associated with increased

morbidity and a reduction in quality of life. • The relative increase in mortality is less in older than

young adults and the body weight associated with maximal survival increases with advancing age.

• Caution should be exercised in recommending weight loss to overweight older people on the basis of body weight alone.

OLD AGE AND OBESITY

Weight was recorded prior and after the administration of green tea . It was found that

• Around 70 percent of the samples had reduced their weight to 2 kilograms.

• The samples suffered from disability to move, frequent joint pains due to their increase in weight

• Drinking Green tea the samples acclaimed that they felt light and active.

OLD AGE AND CVD

Page 12: Green tea and its benefits – old age

OLD AGE AND CVD

• The risk of heart disease increases about 3-fold with each advancing decade.

• Older age is considered a risk factor for heart disease after age 55 for women and after age 45 for men.

• This is partly because many women younger than 55 have not yet gone through menopause and still have high levels of the female hormone estrogen in their blood.

• High blood pressure also increases the risk of CVD.

Page 13: Green tea and its benefits – old age

OLD AGE AND CVD• The samples cholesterol levels were tested and it was

seen that there was substantial decrease in cholesterol levels among 85 percentage of the samples

• Studies reveals that the caffeine and polyphenols in green tea increase thermogenesis, the rate at which calories are burned, and therefore raises metabolism. Raising metabolism causes the body to burn more calories, which in turn can lead to weight loss.

• Statistical inferences were drawn and was proved that green tea remarkably reduced weight , cholesterol and Blood Pressure

OLD AGE AND DIABETES

Page 15: Green tea and its benefits – old age

Diabetes and Old age

• Fasting sugar, post-meal or post prandial, for the selected 20 samples was done.

• It was found that the eleven (55%) patients fell in the category of early diabetes(101-126mg/dl) and nine (45%) had established diabetes (more than 126 mg/dl).

• After the consumption of tea it was found that nearly 64 percentage had decreased their sugar levels from early diabetes to normal levels (70-100mg/dl), and 20 percentage had their levels reduced from established to early diabetes levels.

Page 16: Green tea and its benefits – old age

II Phase of the Study• Qualitative and Quantitative tests were conducted on green

tea and Ordinary Tea to analyse the presence of antioxidants and polyphenols in green tea.

• Qualitative Test showed that antioxidants were present in tea and green tea.

• Qualitative Test showed that antioxidants like alkaloids, catechins, flavonoids, phenols, sugars and tannins were present in green tea, Quantitative results showed that alkaloids - 26.7±1.3, flavonoids – 29.6±4.7, polyphenols – 37.4±3.2 were present. But Quantitative results showed that green tea has more levels of antioxidants which helped in the cure of various metabolic disorders in the Body.

• Pamphlets were also distributed to samples to create awareness on green tea, its method of preparation and its benefits.

CONCLUSION

• Two cups of tea also have the equivalent antioxidant activity of one and a half glasses of red wine, 12 glasses of white wine and seven glasses of orange juice.

• Overweight, hypertension, CVD , diabetes and obesity are recognized as major risk factors leading to unhealthy life and quick death.

• Green tea helps you manage these so drink two cups every day.
