Against FC DallasSunday’s match marks the first time Portland

and FC Dallas meet in MLS postseason play, but the 14th all-time meeting between the two clubs since 2011. The Timbers have compiled a 5-4-4 record against FC Dallas since 2011 and are unbeaten at home (4-0-2) in six match-ups at Providence Park. Portland has lost just two matches in their last nine regular-season meetings with FC Dallas (4-2-3), while Portland has scored multiple goals in three of its last four regular-season meetings against the club. Sunday’s match marks the third meeting of 2015 as Portland earned a 1-1-0 record against FC Dallas during the regular season.

Following Sunday’s match, the Timbers will travel to face FC Dallas for the second game of the Western Conference Championship on Sunday, Nov. 29, with kickoff and broadcast information to be determined. The winner of the conference finals between Portland and Dallas will advance to face either New York Red Bulls or Columbus Crew SC in the 2015 MLS Cup on Dec. 6.

The Portland Timbers advanced to the Western Conference Championship of the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs after earning a 2-0 win (2-0 on aggregate) over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the second leg of the Western Confer-ence Semifinals on Nov. 8 at B.C. Place. With the win, Portland advanced to the conference finals for the second time in the last three sea-sons and will play host to FC Dallas in the first match of the two-leg, aggregate goal series on Sunday, Nov. 22, at Providence Park; kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). Sunday’s playoff match will be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1.

Against Whitecaps FC, Portland extended its undefeated streak to six consecutive matches (4-0-2) across all competitions since Sept. 26 with the road win in the second leg of the con-ference semifinals. The Timbers registered their second straight shutout in the playoffs and re-turn to the Western Conference Championship for the second time in the last three seasons. Forward Fanendo Adi registered his first career postseason goal for Portland against Vancouver, while midfielder Diego Chara added a second goal for the Timbers late in the match on Nov. 8.

The Timbers have compiled one of the league’s best home records over the last three seasons, earning a mark of 24-7-20 overall, including an 8-3-6 record during the 2015 sea-son and a 7-1-8 record at home against teams from the Western Conference, dating back to Sept. 7, 2014. Defensively, Portland finished the 2015 season tied for the most shutouts in the league (13) and has logged an MLS-best 35 clean sheets in the regular season since 2013.

The veteran defender and midfielder, who had been playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) since 1974, had spent several seasons struggling with injury and had just finished playing a season with an indoor soccer team in Detroit, Mich.

But Fagan, who was then 30 years old and tired of spending time away from his family in Los Angeles, wanted desperately to get back to the West Coast. He spent hours calling NASL club after NASL club — the Vancouver Whitecaps, the San Jose Earth-quakes, the Seattle Sounders — asking for a trial.

Finally, a fortuitous call to the Portland Tim-bers front office resulted in the chance that he’d been waiting for.

The receptionist told Fagan that the team was training down in Southern California for its preseason. She asked him if he could drive out to Anaheim to talk to the coach. Fagan, desperate for the opportunity, didn’t hesitate.

“I played one of the best games I ever played in my life,” Fagan remembered about his tryout. “I hit tens. Just one of those things. I knew I was a decent player, but I was on fire that day.”

Not only did Fagan play some of the best soccer of his career during that tryout, but he was also on the verge of becoming a U.S. citizen. This was a crucial advantage in a league that required each club to feature six American players on a 17-man roster that was typically filled with foreigners.

“Now [Timbers head coach] Vic Crowe is looking at me thinking: ‘I’ve got this English guy, who’s a U.S. citizen, I’ve got to bring him!’” Fagan said.

When Crowe asked Fagan to sign with the club, Fagan immediately put pen to paper, signing a contract to join the Portland Timbers before the team had even left Los Angeles.

was searching

for a club to

call home.

to Detroit, Fagan was more than happy to move his family to Portland and finally put down roots in his adopted country.

“Portland was a special city for me. I loved the city. I took a liking to it right away and I really had a warm feeling playing here,” Fagan said with a laugh.

But when the Timbers ended operations in 1982 — the NASL itself would cease just two years later — Fagan suddenly saw a productive profes-sional career come to an abrupt close. It was time for him and his Timbers teammates to plan their next moves.

Fagan, who had spent years coaching kids on the side, says the choice was simple.

“We were one-trick ponies,” he said of himself and his Timbers teammates. “Soccer is the word. That’s what we can do. But now [in 1982] we’re on the coaching side of things. Not everyone coached before, but I did.”

Today, 35 years later, Fagan still calls the Portland metro area home, having coached at the club level, professional and the collegiate level with Portland State University and Warner Pacific University.

It was Fagan, along with other former Timbers players who got into coaching like Clive Charles, Brian Gant and John Bain, who helped lay the groundwork for the explosion of youth soccer in Oregon.

“It took a while to get it going in Portland, but when some [youth] clubs started, they started to build big attendance and now they’ve got loads of coaches,” Fagan said. “And it flourished. It grew very quickly.”

Having built such a strong foundation, both at the club and collegiate levels, Fagan recently decided to retire from his head coaching position at Warner Pacific. After 26 years there, Fagan says it was time for him to move into another chapter of his life.

“I enjoyed my time with Warner Pacific,” he said. “It was a long time, a long period of time, a long bite out of your life. I made the decision that it was time for me to move back a little bit.”

But knowing Fagan, it won’t be long before the sport he loves comes calling again.

General Manager Gavin Wilkinson

Gavin Wilkinson, a long-time member of the Timbers organization and a former New Zealand international, serves as the club’s General Manager. He first joined the club as a player for the Timbers’ USL First Division side in 2001, before taking over as the head coach and general manager during the club’s final years in the second division from 2007-10.

As general manager, Wilkinson has formed the Timbers’ deeply integrated, vertical development system, which includes newly added United Soccer Leagues club Portland Timbers 2 (T2), the Portland Timbers U-23s and Timbers Academy teams (U-18, U-16 and U-14). He was instrumental in establishing an innovative partnership with Oregon Youth Soccer Association, which encompasses the statewide Olympic Development Program and regional training centers, as well as the adidas Timbers Alliance. Wilkinson also serves as the general manager for Portland Thorns FC, the 2013 National Women’s Soccer League champions.

During his tenure as the club’s general manager and head coach from 2007-10, Wilkinson assembled a 50-29-39 record over four seasons in the USL First Division/USSF Division-2 Pro League and was a two-time USL First Division Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He guided the club to three postseason berths, including its only semifinals appearances as a sec-ond-division club in 2007 and 2009. As head coach, Wilkinson oversaw Cascadia Cup (a fan-based derby between Portland, Seattle and Van-couver) titles in 2009, 2010 and again in 2012, and was a two-time recipient of the FieldTurf Coach of the Year for the USL First Division (2007, 2009).

24-game unbeaten streak and winning the Commissioner’s Cup. The Timbers set a new single-season, league record with the impressive streak (14-0-10), surpassing the previous mark of 15 games set in 2005. The club’s record-setting run also ranks among the longest in U.S. Soccer history. Finishing in first place at 16-4-10 (58pts), Portland was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the league’s regular-season champion and earned a berth into the USL First Division semifinals.

Wilkinson’s 13-year professional playing career included time with clubs in six different countries, includ-ing Portugal, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. A defender, he joined the reborn Timbers for their inaugural United Soccer Leagues season in 2001, playing in each of the club’s first six seasons and serving the dual role as a player/assistant coach from 2005-06. He finished his playing career ranked among the Timbers’ USL franchise career leaders in games (124) and minutes played (10,181).

A New Zealand native, Wilkinson earned 38 caps with the New Zealand National Team and competed in the 1999 and 2003 FIFA Confederations Cups.

Wilkinson, who holds an “A” coach-ing license from U.S. Soccer, founded the youth club Eastside United, based in Gresham, Ore., in 2001. He helped run the club as its coaching director for many years and now serves as an advisor for the club. In 2010, Eastside United FC’s U-18 boys team (’91 Liver-pool) won the U.S. Youth Soccer U-18 national championship and became the first youth club team from Oregon to win a national title since 1994.

He and his wife, Heather, have two children, Kienan and Brooke.

Head coach Caleb Porter is in his third sea-son with the club in 2015 after guiding the Portland Timbers to record-set-ting campaigns in his first two years in MLS. Guiding the team to an impressive turnaround season and the club’s first-ever MLS postsea-son appearance in 2013, Porter helped direct a record-setting offense in 2014 as the Timbers netted 61 regular-season goals, a club record across all eras. In his third season, Porter led the Timbers to the West-ern Conference Champi-onship for a second time in three seasons, as well as an MLS-club record 15 wins in 2015. He was announced as the Tim-bers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign.

The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, Porter has compiled one of the

league’s top winning percentages among active MLS head coaches with a 41-25-36 mark (.578) after leading Portland to double-digits wins in each of his first three seasons. The 25 losses in his first 100 career games as an MLS head coach ranks tied for the fewest losses with San Jose’s Dominic Kinnear among all MLS coaches who have reached 100 or more games in the league. Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers have made Providence Park one of the toughest places to play in the league, registering an impressive regular-season mark of 24-7-20 at Providence Park over the last three seasons. In 2015, the Timbers registered an MLS-club record 15 wins, including a record-setting four straight from May 27-June 20. Portland also logged 13 shutouts in 2015 and recorded seven road wins – both tied for the most in MLS.

2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS. In comparison to 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improve-ment in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improve-ment in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semifinals of the tournament. After the 2013 season, Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and was named 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA Col-lege Cup appearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University. As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games. As a player at Indiana, he was a three-year captain and led the Hoosiers to four conference titles. Porter was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a de-gree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella.

July 8, outscoring opponents 17-5 during the run. Fans took notice,

too, as the team regularly began to draw crowds in excess of 15,000 for most home games – even seeing 27,310 for a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on July 29. Portland qualified for the playoffs, one of eight teams in the 20-team league to reach the postseason and matched up against regional rival Seattle in the quarterfinals.

Road to Soccer Bowl ’75On the path to the NASL championship match, the Timbers faced off against Seattle in the quarterfinals – earning passage to the semifi-nals off the head of Tony Betts in overtime. As the Sounders failed to clear a corner kick in the 97th minute, Timbers forward Willie Anderson swung in a cross to Betts, unmarked in front of goal, and the midfielder connected on the game-winning header in front of 31,523 fans at Civic Stadium. The Timbers played host to St. Louis in the semifinals before a record crowd of 33,503 in the Rose City and defeated the Stars 1-0 on a goal from Withe to reach Soccer Bowl ’75 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in San Jose. The Rose City magic ran out in the title match as the Timbers sustained a 2-0 loss on Aug. 24, 1975 – ending their first-ever season and sparking a passion for soccer in Portland that still burns strong today.

Sean McAuley returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach. He joined the club midway through the 2012 season from English club Sheffield Wednesday FC, where he served as a head coach in the club’s academy. McAuley suited up for the second-division Timbers as a player during the 2002 season.

McAuley began his coaching career at Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and spent six seasons as the club’s Academy head coach, where he oversaw the development of several youth players who went on to sign with the first team.

A native of Sheffield, England, McAuley played professionally for 15 seasons as a defender from 1990-2005. He started his career with Manchester United and played for Hartlepool United, Scunthorpe United, Rochdale and Halifax Town. McAuley appeared in 16 matches for the Timbers in 2002, logging two assists while helping the club make the postseason.

Adin Brown enters his first season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach in 2015, hav-ing previously played for the team in both the second-division and MLS eras and serving as a coach at the collegiate level at the University of Portland in 2014.

Brown originally joined the second-division Timbers in February 2010 and as-cended with the club upon its move to Major League Soccer in 2011. A three-time All-American at William & Mary, Brown began his 13-year professional playing career with the Colorado Rapids in 2000 when he was the No. 3 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Brown, who appeared in 85 games in his MLS career, also spent time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, helping guide the Revolution to the MLS Cup final in 2002. Prior to joining Portland, Brown headed to Norway for a four-year stint (2005-09) with Aalesund FK, appearing in 69 matches, becoming a finalist for the Adeccoligaen Player of the Year in 2006 and helping the club make its return the country’s premier league in 2007. In 2008, Brown was voted one of the 50 best foreign players to ever play in Norway.

Jay Vidovich enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Timbers, as well as the head coach of Portland’s USL side, Timbers 2 (T2).

One of the most highly regarded soccer coaches at the collegiate level in the United States and an astute developer of talent, Vidovich spent 21 years as a head coach at Wake Forest University from 1994-2014 and an additional eight years as an assistant coach from 1986-93. Under Vidovich’s guidance, Wake Forest reached the NCAA Tournament in 13 of the past 14 seasons and captured five ACC regular-season championships. The program made four consecutive NCAA College Cup appearances from 2006-2009 and won its first NCAA National Championship in 2007.

From Detroit, Mich., Vidovich was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in consecutive seasons (2007, 2008) and compiled a 272-121-50 (.670) overall record in 21 years as head coach at Wake Forest.

Cameron Knowles returns for a fourth season as an assistant coach for the Tim-bers. A former defender for the second-division Timbers from 2007-10, Knowles joined the coaching ranks in 2012 after a seven-year professional playing career.

Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft, Knowles played two seasons in MLS before joining the Timbers. In Portland, Knowles was a three-time USL First Division all-league selection and played in 77 games for the club.

From Auckland, New Zealand, Knowles anchored Portland’s backline and played a key role in the Timbers’ USL First Division record-setting, 24-game unbeaten streak in 2009.

Players to Watch Young, dynamic forward Fabian Castillo led FC Dallas with nine goals and nine assists in 30 regular-season appearances while midfielder Mauro Diaz registered a team-leading 10 assists and eight goals in 24 matches. Homegrown goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez, 20, stepped into the starting role at the end of August and hasn’t looked back, registering 37 saves, five shutouts and a 7-3-1 overall record in his first 11 career MLS matches. Gon-zalez made three saves in 120 minutes against Seattle in the second leg of the conference semifinals before registering two stops to help FC Dallas advance in the penalty kick shootout.

Dallas enters Sunday’s Western Conference

Championship first-leg match after defeating Seattle Sounders FC in a dramatic, 4-2 penalty kick shootout win in the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals on Nov. 8 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. After finishing the series tied 3-3 on aggregate, the second leg match against Seattle lasted through two scoreless, 15-minute periods of extra time. Goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez recorded two saves in the penalty kick shootout to help FC Dallas advance to the Western Conference Finals. Head coach Oscar Pareja’s side entered the postseason as the conference’s No. 1 seed, securing a first-round bye with the most wins (18) and highest goal differential (+13) in the Western Conference.

NASLIn eight seasons in the North American Soccer

League from 1975-82, the Timbers reached the

postseason three times, including a thrilling run

to Soccer Bowl ’75 in their inaugural season

as a franchise. After earning the No. 1 spot in

the NASL Western Division, the Timbers won

2-1 in sudden-death overtime game against

Cascadia-rivals Seattle in front of 31,000 fans at

Civic Stadium (now Providence Park) on Aug. 12,

1975. Following a 1-0 win in the semifinal against

St. Louis, the Timbers advanced to Soccer Bowl

’75 to face the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Spartan

Stadium in San Jose. Despite a historic run in

their inaugural season, the Timbers suffered a

2-0 loss in the championship match.

MLSThe Timbers made their first-ever MLS Cup Play-

offs appearance in 2013, in just three years as an

MLS club. Under the direction of first-year head

coach Caleb Porter, the Timbers finished first in

the Western Conference after ending the regular

season with an eight-game unbeaten streak,

setting MLS-club records in points (57), goals (54)

and shutouts (15). The Timbers defeated Seattle

Sounders FC 5-3 on aggregate in the Western

Conference Semifinals to reach the conference

finals against Real Salt Lake. Portland would

eventually go on to lose 5-2 on aggregate against

Real Salt Lake. For the second time in the last

three seasons, the Timbers have reached the

conference finals – squaring off against FC Dallas

on Nov. 22 and Nov. 29.

USLThe reborn Portland Timbers began play in 2001 as a second-division side in USL and qualified for the

postseason in seven of their 10 seasons. After reaching the quarterfinals in 2001 and the first round in

2002, the Timbers won the Commissioner’s Cup with the best regular-season record in 2004. In the con-

ference semifinals, the Timbers fell in a two-game, aggregate-goals series against the Seattle Sounders.

A game-winning goal by Seattle (advancing 3-2 on aggregate) ushered the Timbers out of the playoffs.

The Timbers once again won the Commissioner’s Cup in 2009 and automatically qualified for the semifi-

nals before falling 5-4 in a two-game, aggregate-goals series against Cascadia-rival Vancouver.

PORTLAND TIMBERS ACADEMYThe Timbers Academy consists of teams in the U-18, U-16 and U-14 age brackets of the U.S. Soccer Develop-ment Academy. The Timbers Academy teams compete in the North-west Division against other elite youth teams in the region, including academy teams from MLS clubs LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Timbers U-16s also participate in the annual MLS Generation adidas Cup.

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2The level just below the Portland Timbers first team on the pyramid, T2 is Portland’s newest ad-dition to the development structure. Playing their matches in the 24-team USL – T2 was founded on Oct. 14, 2014, and is a fully professional team that creates a bridge between the Portland Timbers U-23s Premier Development League (PDL) side and the Timbers first team. Play-ing their home games at Merlo Field on the campus of the University of Portland, the T2 roster will be comprised of a mix of Timbers first-team players on loan to the club, as well as players that possess many dif-ferent qualities and come from varied backgrounds. As well as players that are familiar with wearing the Timbers crest, some experienced profession-als and young players that can spend time de-veloping for the ultimate purpose of reaching the first team. In December, Jay Vidovich was named as the club’s first head coach for the 2015 USL season. Vidovich will lead T2 after 21 seasons as head coach at Wake Forest University, where he became one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history.

Timbers Youth Leagues, Tournaments and CampsThe Timbers and OYSA have formed an innovative partnership, which sees the statewide youth soccer organization become a part of the Timbers’ compre-hensive youth development structure. One of the first of its kind, the partnership between the Timbers and OYSA has established top-tier development oppor-tunities for thousands of Oregon’s youth soccer players through OYSA’s club leagues and tournaments. The Timbers provide OYSA and its clubs resources for coaching education and share best practices in player development, creat-ing a unified development philosophy across the state. The MLS club also is the presenting partner of the Oregon State Cup.

adidas Timbers Training Center


On April 19, 2012, the Portland Timbers unveiled the new adidas Timbers Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility, built as part of a 10-year partnership with Tualatin Hills Parks & Recreation District. The training center features a natural-grass field and is the primary on-field training ground of the Major League Soccer club. Construction is nearly complete on a 2,600-square-foot expansion of the adidas Timbers Training Center. The new space will include additional locker rooms, training areas and office space to serve the Timbers, T2, the Timbers U-23s and the Timbers Academy.

Some of the features of the adidas Timbers Training Center include a 7,000-square-foot indoor facility, with locker rooms for the Timbers first team and development teams, fully-equipped training and recently expanded fitness areas, offices and a spacious lounge/common area for Timbers players.

The grass field, widely regarded as one of the best fields in the state, is a combination of 75 per-cent perennial ryegrass and 25 percent Kentucky bluegrass that is perfectly suited for cooler climates and provides uniform cover, and greater stability, footing and durability.

The adidas Timbers Training Center is located in Beaverton, approximately 10 minutes from Provi-dence Park. It also serves as the training home for the Timbers’ development teams, specifically the Timbers U-23s and the club’s Academy teams.

As part of the public/private partnership with THPRD, the Timbers make an annual donation to the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation and will conduct a series of annual youth soccer camps and coach-es’ clinics at the adidas Timbers Training Center. The training center includes a synthetic, FieldTurf field designated for public use.

A new grass feld was planted in February 2015, while a new turf pitch was installed in early 2015. The sod was planted in a vertically draining, sand-based root zone that includes small amounts of peat and calcined clay to stabilize moisture content and to hold nutrient. The grass feld was built using over 4,600 tons of specialty sand blend and will drain up to 12 inches of precipitation an hour.
