Improvement of fuel distribution across the burner zone (andacross the boiler load range) is key to delivering improvedcombustion performance and associated coal­fired boilerperformance optimisation.

This is achieved through measurement and understanding of fuelflow and associated velocity specific to each burner PF pipeconfiguration followed by the necessary adjustment to fuel flowusing appropriate flow­balancing technology. This helps facilitateimproved alignment of air flow and fuel flow, thereby helping toestablish the required air­to­fuel ratio (AFR).

Addressing improved fuel distribution and associated burner­to­burner AFR is fundamental to managing emissions to air suchas NOx, CO, particulates, etc. It is also fundamental to addressingother combustion performance­related challenges associatedwith fireside corrosion and carbon­in­ash as well as slagging andfouling within the furnace. Delivery of improved combustionstability is also fundamental to improved flexible operations andminimum stable generation (MSG).

In addition to fuel distribution, PF particle size distribution canhave a significant impact on burner combustion performance.Good management of PF particle size distribution throughappropriate management of the milling system is essential.

Therefore, on­line measurement and monitoring of mill exit PF particle size distribution will help facilitate appropriate mill management and help ensure fuel is delivered to the burner zone at the required particle size distribution.

Whilst addressing and managing key influencing factors such asburner­to­burner fuel distribution, fuel quality and particle sizedistribution are essential to delivering improved combustionperformance with commensurate improvement in boilerperformance, there are other factors that must be addressed.Management of combustion zone stoichiometry (theoretical plusexcess air necessary for complete combustion) is a further keyelement that must be addressed.

Combustion zone stoichiometry is managed via the addition ofappropriate primary and secondary air flow to the furnace.Getting the balance right is extremely important but is oftenundermined via excessive ‘uncontrolled’ furnace air ingress(tramp air) or in­leakage at other locations such as the air­heaterand duct seals.

Key to facilitating improved combustion performance is thebalancing of fuel distribution across the burner zone,management of fuel quality and PF particle size distribution andminimising uncontrolled air ingress to ensure the combustionzone operates at the required AFR.
