Greenbushes Primary School Principal Kylie Loney outlined a breathtaking list of activities and opportunities provided to students at the school during the 2020 calendar year in her address at the end of year Concert in December.
Despite the advent of COVID-19 and restrictions imposed on schools and the community the students at Greenbushes still managed to participate in a range of sporting and curricular activities both at school and in partnership with other schools. Highlights of the year included the Science Fair at Greenbushes attended by Balingup and Kirup students, specialist Tennis, Hockey and AFL Clinics, a district Spell-a-demic competition, NAIDOC Week activities, Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse Concert, Tennis West ANZ Hotshots Racquet Programme, Tour of Margaret River cyclists visit and visit to the Mammoth Caves and Yallingup Maze.
Mrs Loney also thanked P & C President Leisa Hollemans and her team for all their assistance during the year and the parents and friends who contributed to the creation of the Breakfast Club kitchen area and nature play area. Other school works included new carpets, screen doors, improvements to the rainwater tank storage and solar panels.

FRIENDS OLD AND NEW GATHER FOR CAROLS
Sunday the 13th, the day of “Carols in the Park”
dawned, with an ominous weather forecast on my favourite weather app. Why would you organise an event on any day of the week that fell on 13
th anyway?
I was not going to be singing, I had been volunteered for logistics ie: lifting heavy things. In the face of the garbage weather forecast, the singers remained optimistic even after the first downpour. We started to set things up in the Park, the sun was shining again after all and steam was rising off the grass. Another downpour left the grassed area sodden and the wind was picking up.
The enthusiasm for outdoor ambience and carols under the big pine tree was somewhat dampened and reluctantly the call was made. “This has all got to be packed up right now, we are moving to the school” came the instruction. “Yes boss, three bags full boss.”
There followed a flurry of activity as my trusty offsider (Andy) and I hauled the piano and seating up to the school. “Oh can you bring up a wheelie bin too?”, and then she was gone. So the two music events of the afternoon were relocated to the school and “Carols in the Park ” became “Carols in the Shed”.
By the time everything had been lugged up the steps to the large undercover area at the school, the boss had reappeared, all dolled up in a frock, and ready to sit down to enjoy the folk club performance.
The lifter of heavy things however was still in his sweaty work clothes. “You better go home and get changed” said the boss. I did get back in time to catch the second half of the folk club and some great performances. The finale featured a wall of guitars, banjos and ukuleles, and was quite a spectacle. Made me think I need to give up lifting chairs and pianos and pick up a guitar instead.
At around 4:00pm the carols singers in their various Christmas colours and Santa hats started to arrive. As some of the Folk Club audience moved off, a new audience trailed in.
By 4:30pm we had an audience of about 40 people of all ages, a pretty decent turnout given the weather. The singers, 14 in all, were organising themselves around Felicity and her piano. Although there had been a few practice sessions, this was to be the first time that they had all been able to sing as a group.
In addition to the Greenbushes Community Singers, there were a few ladies from Balingup’s Valley Voices, Irma & Lee better known as the “Green Herring Duo” and the Argentinian song bird “Natascha”. Who knew that we had such a talent hidden away in Greenbushes? Trevor the original driving force behind the Greenbushes Community Singers, and who sadly left the group earlier in the year, was also back for the afternoon.
Greenbushes Community Singers founding leader Trevor Riley returned for the event.
Lydia Perenzin coordinated the Carols event.

Santa hats various were abundant, and just when I was thinking that Irma had easily won the hats stakes with her ludicrously elongated kangaroo tail version, Trevor donned his antlers and red nose and beat her to the finish line.
I was not without expectations, after all hadn’t they stated in the last newsletter that this would be an “extravaganza”; and further more we had been rather living and breathing this event in our house for the past few weeks. The first cab off the ranks was the Noongar welcome song Wanjoo; an unusual choice and an engaging start for all the Greeny school kids who are indeed the masters of this song.
By a third of the way through the show a multicultural, world theme was clearly emerging, and seemed very fitting in a year when the world has become a rather small place. The Christmas tradition of “gift giving” came through strongly with the MC’s (the boss) announcement that “Our singing and dancing and laughter today will be our gift to each other, our community, God and the universe”. I couldn’t think of a better gift giving songs than the “Twelve Days of Christmas” and the “Carol of the Drum” and who ever thought of dancing at a “Carols” night? I am sure I have never come across it before?
The traditional carols “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and “Silent Night” were sung in multiple languages with lovely harmonies. For me the Spanish carol “El Nacimiento” written by Ariel Ramirez and sung so beautifully by Natascha, was the highlight of the afternoon. And as for the fun songs, as always they were just good fun and who doesn’t want a hippopotamus for Christmas?
The songs were broken up with Andy’s recital of the Australian version of “The night before Christmas” and with stories about Christmas traditions in Germany (Irma), Argentina (Tash) and the Philippines (Leonie).
Not much of a dancer myself, I decided to pass on the “Reindeer Hokey Pokey” . There were plenty of eager participants, with lots of hooves, antlers, tails and noses. Tiny Maya Mitchell right in the midst of it really stole the show.
In keeping with the theme, the last song for the evening was José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad”, in Spanish and English. All in all it was a very entertaining afternoon with plenty of variety and never a dull moment. I guess they achieved what they set out to do. Well done! (and the boss was OK too)
Author: Ray Hoes The Greenbushes Community Singers would like to thank our audience and everyone who participated and contributed to this event. Special thanks to Mindy Mitchell who produced a beautiful photographic memory of the event for us. Don’t forget to pencil in next year’s Carols and watch this space.

SUNDAY FOLK CLUB CONTINUES IN 2021
COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS DECEMBER 2020 Greenbushes families turned out to celebrate Christmas at the traditional Community Christmas Party in December.
Many expressed gratitude that Western Australia has been largely shielded from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to date with Christmas celebrations able to go ahead in cities and towns around the State.
The Community Christmas Party was followed by the Grow Greenbushes End of Year Barbecue where members of the community celebrated the achievements of the year and the individuals and community groups who “made a difference” in 2020.
The Greenbushes Community Resource Centre and Nicole Ward were presented with Certificates of Appreciation for their efforts in serving the community during the COVID-19 lock down. A Certificate of Appreciation was also awarded to former Greenbushes resident Trevor Riley for founding the Community Singing Group.

My gosh aren’t we all glad to see the back of
2020. Who knew at the start of the year that
terms such as “Covid-19”, “Quarantine”, “social
distancing” and my all-time favourite “you’ve got your
mute button on” would become a part of our everyday
vernacular. We can but hope that the roll out of the
vaccine in coming months will see the World return to
something like normal during the course of 2021.
During December we bade a sad farewell to our 2020
Trainees, but we also happily welcomed our 2021
Trainees and apprentices into the Talison family. The
Traineeship programme adopted by Talison is a great
opportunity for local youth to gain an exposure to
working life and whilst we often take them in as
“children” by the end of the 12 months we send them
out into the big wide world as young adults. It was a
delight to see the maturing of our 2020 Trainees and I
look forward to working with, and seeing the
development of, our 2021 intake over the next 12
months.
MINE NEWS - Craig’s Corner
December also saw the departure (into retirement) of a
long standing Talison employee. Peter McKay, dubbed
“Mr Fixit” for his ability to problem solve across a suite
of disciplines, decided to hang up his hard hat and head
to the coast after a mining career that has spanned
more than 40 years – 24 of which were at
Greenbushes. Peter began his career at Greenbushes
in an electrical quality and maintenance role after a 20-
year career in the iron ore industry. Long term
employees form the backbone of any organisation and
Peter certainly became embedded as an integral part of
the fabric of Greenbushes during his tenure and will be
sorely missed.
We wish our 2020 Trainees Britney Loney, Bonnie Barber, Caitlyn Wheatley, Joel Karafilis and Jade Miller all the best for the future.
Welcome to 2021 Trainees and Apprentices , Shelley Waters, Lewis Richings, Amy Lindberg, Bonnie Butler, Tristan Burghuis, Kallee Burkett, Shona Fluck and Jade Millar.
Angie Cornish, Sam Brody, Kate McGuire, Ian McGuire and Chantelle McKay at the farewell for Peter McKay (third from left) in December 2020.
The Talison Board has approved the construction of a
new Mine Services Area (MSA) for the mining team.
The new MSA will be located south of Stanifer street
and west of the South West Highway.
On-ground activities will commence in
the first week of January. The entire
project is expected to take
approximately two (2) years to
complete. The area will become quite
busy with large items of machinery
being mobilised. For this reason, it is
proposed that the Mine Heritage Walk
Trail be closed from the start of
January so as to ensure that no members of the public
will be placed in harm’s way.
As we gain a better understanding of the breadth of the
activities and interactions which will occur, we will revisit
how we can best open up sections of the Walk Trail.
Talison apologises in advance for the inevitable
disruptions to the community which will occur as a result
of the MSA construction activities but at all times will
operate and take appropriate actions with a view to
public safety.

Greenbushes-Balingup Newsletter JANUARY 2021
2021 will see concentrate production from Greenbushes
increasing by some 30-35% over the 2020 production.
Commissioning of Chemical Grade Plant #2 (CGP2) is
planned to recommence in the second quarter of 2021
and this will progressively become the base load plant
for Greenbushes over the next couple of years.
April will see the re-mobilisation of the Tailings
Retreatment Plant (TRP) constructor. Construction of the
TRP is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021
with operation planned to commence in January 2022.
The 2020 year was an extremely challenging one for all
Greenbushes personnel and I expect the 2021 year to be
no less challenging. What stands us in good stead
however, is the quality of the people associated with
Greenbushes (both at the mine and within the local
communities) who work together.
I hope that your Christmas and New Year was an
enjoyable period and that we can all look forward to the
2021 year with a sense of optimism.
The Talison Board has also approved Talison’s
contribution to two (2) significant community projects in
Greenbushes proposed to be undertaken by the Shire of
Bridgetown-Greenbushes:
the relocation of the North Greenbushes Railway
Station to become part of the Discovery Centre; and
the establishment of a sealed central carpark in
Greenbushes.
Talison sees both of these projects as enhancing the
Greenbushes townsite and community amenity and
looks forward to working with the Shire and local
community to bring them to fruition.
December saw the announcement by Tianqi and IGO
Limited that they had entered into an agreement which
will see IGO attain a 49% stake in Tianqi’s Australian
assets (including its 51% share of Greenbushes). Whilst
the deal will see a much needed injection of funds into
Tianqi we do not expect to see any direct impact on the
Greenbushes operation and for us it will be very much
business as usual.
We are starting to see some green shoots of growth in
the global lithium market following what was a
depressed year of global demand in 2020.
There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments…

What happened in December
The last Busy Bee for 2020 was very productive on 23 December. We cut back the native plants near the shed, finished repairing the netting over the orchard, installed new lightweight poles to support the orchard net, trimmed the kangaroo paws and started laying a path to the picnic area along Stanifer Street. The Community Garden is looking beautiful at this time. Walk on down for a visit and enjoy a picnic in the shade at any time. Thank you to all volunteers who are making this happen. The regular busy bees will continue in 2021, alternating fortnightly between Tuesdays and Wednesdays. During school term, busy bees start after school drop-off at 9am. Next busy bees are on Tuesday 12 January, Wednesday 27 January, Tuesday 10 February and Wednesday 24 February. Join us when you can and give us a hand.

with Felicity Littleton
Angophera costata:
You might have been reading this page earlier last year when I presented some interesting trees growing in the Greenbushes town site.
This wonderfully majestic tree seems to be endowed with several Common Names. A. Sydney Red Gum. B. Apple Blossom Gum. And also, C. Smooth Barked Apple.
It is described as a massive, broad domed evergreen tree, possessing large twisted limbs, and an expanded trunk base.
Some publications describe the tree as “up to 20 metres”. Others state that it is “between 15 to 25 metres” so I suppose it can be quite variable, depending where it is growing. It is endemic to the coastal areas of NSW and Qld. And it is stated that it will grow in most soil types.
The tree has lance shaped leaves arranged in opposite pairs. Flower buds are usually in groups of 3, and the colour of the flowers are white to cream and fragrant. The ribbed oval or Bell shaped fruit are especially interesting from my point of view.
Renowned for its orange bark, apparently the timber is quite brittle, and, in a natural setting, butts of fallen limbs form callused bumps on the trunk. This adds to its gnarled appearance.
Returning from a holiday, I finally got around to seek out the tree and take some photos. It was ferociously windy, and the flowers were just finishing really. As far as I could count, there are 3 (or it might be 4) of these lovely Eastern Australian Gum Trees in Jephson Street.
One cannot help but admire such a Grand tree.
I love it that Trees stimulate rainfall.

ERRATUM: Apologies for the incorrect naming of the Agrostocrinum in last month’s issue.
The old synonym "stypandroides" was out of date and should have been "hirsutum". I failed to detect this, and strangely enough, when I went up to the Herbarium which I have formed here in Greenbushes, I found that I had crossed out the old name and written "hirsutum" alas, too late.
As for the incorrect name on the Thelymitra, I was so keen to take a decent snapshot of the Sun Orchid, that I probably should have looked a little closer. Well, I have got tons to learn about identifying these correctly. So often I have consulted old Botanist and Ecologist friends to guide me along.
So many wonderfully talented people involved in the study of our beautiful bushland.
