GREENGRID MODULAR GREEN ROOF SYSTEMALBERT HOUSE, WESTON-SUPER-MARE

Albert House Nursing Home is situated in Weston-Super-Mare

just metres from the sea. The existing building is being

renovated and as part of his remit to ensure the best possible

environment for his clients, the owner wanted to install a new

green roof. Further new build works to the development will

also have a green roof.

After looking at various systems, the owner identified the

GreenGrid system as being the ideal choice for his requirements,

since it meant that he could have easy access to his existing

older bitumen roof surface at any time and he could incorporate

new GreenGrid areas onto his new buildings as each stage of

the development progressed.

For the initial GreenGrid phase on the existing roof, the modules

arrived on site at 10.30am, delivered by HIAB truck. The

modules were hoisted onto the roof in protective wrapped cages

where they were easily removed in preparation for laying.

Since the GreenGrid modules are completely self contained

green roof units, this meant that there were no complicated

staged material deliveries to co-ordinate. For this project, there

was one vehicle, a minimal period of time to hoist and installation

began immediately.

A protective layer of geotextile fleece was laid over the existing

bitumen waterproofed surface. This protects not only the

waterproofing, but also the GreenGrid modules themselves, as

some membrane types, for example PVC, have been known to

cause cross contamination with other materials.

Once the fleece was loose laid on the surface, the modules

were simply carried to the required location and laid onto the

fleece in accordance with a module layout plan which was

provided by Trelleborg.

GREENGRID MODULAR GREEN ROOF SYSTEMALBERT HOUSE, WESTON-SUPER-MARE

GreenGrid is a simple system to install and large areas can

be covered in a short space of time. The flexibility of the

system meant that the client had freedom to choose his level

of maintenance, the design and the budget. Should a decision

be made at any time to change the plants, the design or the

area of the roof covered, this is easily achieved.

On this occasion, the project was completed at 1.15pm, which

meant that the time taken from arrival on site to departure

was just under 3 hours. This ensured that there was little or

no disturbance caused to the nursing home residents.

Once the modules were placed, the client had an instant

green roof. GreenGrid modules are grown and matured in

the nursery prior to delivery, which means that an established

effect is provided immediately, as can be seen here. The

planting is deep and lush and some sedum modules are even

in flower. The 100mm depth of growing media ensures that

the sedum has enough sustenance to encourage it to grow

and thrive for many years to come.

Other green roof systems can take up to two years to become

established and much greater maintenance and supervision

is often required.

Although the modules were initially visible, after a few weeks

the sedum merged together to form a complete carpet, and

the client still has complete peace of mind knowing that he

can still reach his waterproofing layer easily. Should his

waterproofing eventually need replaced, he can still retain his

green investment by moving the modules off-site, renewing

the waterproofing and then returning the GreenGrid modules

back to their location.
