M1/DTW 1938 FRANKLIN STREET #204 DETROIT, MICHIGAN M1DTW.COM A new 17,000 SF office building for a global leader in greenhouse development and distribution attached to a new greenhouse facility outside Melbourne, Australia. Conceptually, the project consists of two sites: the first is the chosen plat of land which required a design that accommodates vehicular access, a future public infrastructure right- of-way, and an aboriginal cultural zone, while the second site is the interior of the greenhouse itself, which required the negotiation of the rational infrastructure and highly controlled interior climate optimized for the growth of plant life. The two-story office building accommodates a diverse workforce and supports everything from management, marketing, and sales departments to technical spaces related to greenhouse operations, including support spaces for those working directly on the greenhouse floor. The footprint of the office building slips through the east wall of the greenhouse, where the momentary interruption of the polycarbonate film announces an entry and provides the office a physical presence on the exterior. Additionally, this slippage permits interior views and access directly into the greenhouse interior as well as access to daylight and views over the adjacent trial garden and rural landscape to the west. The structure is clad in tropical wood vertical slats on both the interior and exterior façades and acts as a warm visual and material counterweight to the unrelenting monotony of the industrial interior and ephemeral architecture of the greenhouse, while providing filtered light throughout the office interior. The office proposed both active and passive cooling to provide a reprieve and relief from the hot and humid interior greenhouse environment. A new 17,000 SF office building for a global leader in greenhouse development and distribution attached to a new greenhouse facility outside Melbourne, Australia.

Conceptually, the project consists of two sites: the first is the chosen plat of land which required a design that accommodates vehicular access, a future public infrastructure right-of-way, and an aboriginal cultural zone, while the second site is the interior of the greenhouse itself, which required the negotiation of the rational infrastructure and highly controlled interior climate optimized for the growth of plant life.
