Ecological-Botanical Garden
The Ecological-Botanical Garden (ÖBG) provides a unique journey all around the world of plants in just a few hours! Approximately 12.000 plant species grow in naturally arranged habitats on 16 ha outdoor space and in 6.000 m² of greenhouse area.
Founded in 1978, the ÖBG is a central institution of the University of Bayreuth, providing teaching and research, the preservation of endangered plant and animal species, as well as public recreation and is offering a wide range of educational and cultural events all year long.
Unique! Collection of crop plants
About 800 different species and varieties of tradi-tional and recent crops such as vegetables, grains, fiber and dye plants are presented every year on more than 2 ha in the crop garden section of the ÖBG. More than 130 different fruit varieties, primarily traditional and regional, grow in an orchard meadow. In the sec-tion of medicinal plants more than 60 species are presented, arranged according to their indications. Many of them are known as household remedies.
Discover the world of plants
Plants of Europe, North America and Asia thrive in our naturally designed habitats in the extensive, mainly geographically arranged outdoor area. Stroll through forests and prairies of North America, plants of Japan, China and the Himalayas with their many rhododendron species and the steppes of Asia. Iris-rich moist meadows, the flora of the Alps and the peat bog, heath and dune landscapes are represen-tatives of the fascinating Central European flora.
In six greenhouses with distinct climatic conditions, the botanical journey leads through moist and hot lowland rainforests and mangroves, to the laurel forests of the Canary Islands and through the seasonal dry forests of South America and Africa. Visit the unique indoor display of tropical alpine vegetation and the extended collection of mediterranean and subtropical plants, presented outdoor during summer. In addition, throughout all the tropical and subtropical exhibits, special attention is drawn to important crop plants such as papaya, cotton and cocoa as well as to little-known ones such as lulo and lucuma.
A garden for biodiversity
In addition to the managed areas, unmanaged sections of the garden encourage development of habitats that have become sparse in nature, such as ponds, wetland biotopes, grasslands on nutrient poor soil and deadwood. Because of its great diversity in plants and habitats, the ÖBG is a paradise for many animal and plant species which have spontaneously found their refuge here.
Another trademark of the ÖBG is the abundance of about 30 different rock types used for land-scaping. The majority of the rocks originate from Northeastern Bavaria, a manifold region with re-spect to its geology, and provides an insight into Earth´s history of this region.

Become a friend of the ÖBG The ÖBG is supported by the so-called “circle of friends” (Freundeskreis e.V.), a network of volun-teers, donators and supporters. We invite you to join us: Become a friend of the ÖBG!
