BE A PIONEERExplore, be open, be curious - be a pioneer. Greenland has attracted adventurers and pioneering spirits since the first people set foot on its ground. From the Inuit to Vikings, polar explorers and missionaries, it has captivated people’s hearts and mind - and it still does today.

Greenlanders themselves are an open-minded and versatile people that honor their roots and uphold the customs that helped them survive in a challenging environment. The powerful Greenlandic nature has made the pioneering spirit imperative for survival and development and has created a strong culture based on empowerment, community - and especially hospitality.

PowerfulGreenland is untamed, powerful and vast in scope. In Greenland, roads end where a town ends, and grand backcountry spreads before your eyes. As if time has stopped. The magnificence of the landscape, the deafening silence and timelessness of nature make you feel small and humble.

PureThe immensity of the world largest island and the limited number of people visiting, leaves plenty of space for you to get your share of unspoilt nature, open spaces and peacefulness. Whether it is taking the first steps - or runs - in the untouched snow or if it is hiking off the beaten path in the virgin wilderness in Greenland, you will find yourself in a place where few have traveled before.

UnpluggedThe backcountry of Greenland is a place that encourages you to disconnect; to live the simple life, without wifi, to let the northern lights or the midnight sun be the light that illuminates the night sky. Greenland encourages you to take time; to stop to say hello in the street, sit on a rock and take in the captivating surroundings, a mindset that fits well with the quiet pace of hiking, dog sledding, cross country skiing. Slow down, unwind and be.

Ice in all types and shapes is what characterizes Ilulissat and the Disko Bay area; UNESCO classified icefjord, glacier, Ice cap and thousands of icebergs decorating the sea. Another landmark is the dog sledding culture - and Ilulissat being the birth town of the famous polar explorer, Knud Rasmussen

Tour Types - What to expect

Hiking, Trekking and Backpacking in Greenland:- The trekking and backpacking

season in Greenland is short. Our tours start around late June and ends in late August.

- Hiking over terrain with limited paths that is often rocky and difficult (East Greenland) or on trails (South and West Greenland). Active hiking hours are often between 5-8 hours per day.

- On the hiking and trekking tours, larger luggage is transported by boat between camps. On backpacking tours all the gear is carried and cooking gear, food, tents, etc. are distributed equally across the group.

- In the East we stay in tents but use hostel/guesthouse accommodation in the towns and hostels/huts in villages, in South Greenland we use hostels or hotels.

- Meals are included and the guide prepares the meals with help from the group

Discovery Adventures- Based in town and doing day tours,

e.g. guided boat excursions, city sightseeing and shorter day hikes.

- Accommodation in guesthouse.

Dog Sledding Tours- Multi-day dog sledding adventures, 2 pers. per dog sledge.- Snow suit and snowshoes are provided or can be rented.- Please note that you may have to get off and walk by the

sledge, if needed. Furthermore you need to have a healthy back, since there are bumps and small jumps on the way.

- Accommodation in basic mountain hut or other sleeping bag accommodation.

- Please notice that on sledge rides, there is no guarantee that the driver speaks Danish or English. However, we can promise you that a lot can be understood using gesticulations

Expeditions- Travelling in isolated

backcountry territory, often over difficult terrain.

- All gear carried by participants or dragged in pulkas.

- Cooking gear, food and tents distributed equally across the group.

- Tent accommodation or mountain hut.

- Meals are included and the groups helps the guide to prepare the meals.

Kayaking Tours- Kayaking tour, including a few days of hiking.- Cooking gear, food and tents distributed equally across

the group.

Skiing Tours- Alpine Ski Touring: Skiing off piste different places in the

vast backcountry. Transportation in between places being part of the journey as you want to reach remote peaks with untouched powder. Luggage/guests transported by boat and behind snowmobiles.

- Cross Country Skiing: Base camp or round trip skiing adventures in East Greenland. You only need to carry your daypack.

- Accommodation in basic mountain hut style accommodation and hostel/guesthouse. Sleeping bag needed.

Weather and Ice ConditionsThe weather in Greenland is normally stable. However, you should be prepared for all kinds of weather when going on a (day) trip. The ice condition in the Arctic sea can be challenging for boat tour/transfers, so be aware that it can cause delays or cancellations. We also recommend you to have a buffer day in Iceland after your trip in case the weather causes delays from Greenland.

Equipment in Greenland:For most of our multi-day Greenland tours that run during summer, it’s important to be prepared for low temperatures during nights and for boat tours among the ice, so warm clothes, good hiking boots and a good sleeping bag are a necessity. For trips in the backcountry you should also bring some protection against mosquitoes such as nets, repellants etc. For our winter tours in Greenland, we have specific equipment lists.

Individual Travel Packages- We take care of all your travel

arrangement (flight and accommodation) and book your day tours and activities.

- You receive a road book with your itinerary and descriptions of hikes (if applicable), maps and vouchers.

- In East Greenland, Ilulissat and Nuuk, both hostel and hotel accommodation is available, in South Greenland we use hostels.

- Meals are not included (except breakfast in hotel accommodation).

Other Practical Information

Equipment Rental and Extra Services:Our multi-day tour passengers can rent sleeping bags through us. The price varies depending on the duration of the tour. We can also book accommodation in Reykjavík before and after the tours and we offer transfers between meeting points and accommodation. All of our multi-day tours in Greenland have an English speaking guide. We also have selected departures with an English and French speaking guide, others with English and Spanish speaking guide.

Mountain Huts in Greenland:Most of the mountain huts we use on our multi-day tours are equipped with bunk beds in shared sleeping halls or just mattresses on the floor. Sleeping bags are needed. The huts we use are very basic without running water, electricity and showers or flushing toilets. Sometimes we stay in a community house with all of the above, but you might have to pay a small fee for using the showers.

Food and Dietary Requirements:On most tours the guides prepare both breakfast and dinner and assistance from passengers is always welcomed. We do our best to accommodate special dietary requirements and try to use local food where possible.

East Greenland is sometimes referred to as the “backside” because of the regions isolation. However it is this same isolation that makes it such a unique destination. Here the mountains rise the highest, towering directly up from the sea and along with deep fjords dotted with icebergs give the environment a dramatic aura. Countless lakes, streams and rivers, waterfalls along with an intensity of a light that is unique also contribute to the magnificent scenery. The awesome landscape has no parallel in the entire arctic making East Greenland a unique destination.

Beautiful Hiking to Unique PlacesCosy Village LifeLong Evenings and Midnight SunKulusuk is a rocky island situated on the outskirts of the Ammassalik fjord system in East Greenland. In summer it features beautiful boulders and cliffs, as well as great hiking routes. Its big brother to the north, the Aputsiak Island, partially covered with a big glacier, is characterized by pristine arctic nature and the peace and quiet one expects in these environments. On this tour we explore the hiking routes of the two islands, experience the life of local folks in the hunter’s village of Kulusuk and get a feeling for how it is to live year round on the Arctic Circle. From our camp in front of the Aputsiak glacier we will be amazed by the quiet nights, see icebergs and drift ice, and be fascinated by the endless daylight of the arctic. We will discover the incredible variety of the arctic flora and with a little luck we might see a humpback whale, a seal and even an arctic fox. Accommodation in a cozy hostel (mountain hut style) in Kulusuk and a comfortable camp on Aputsiak Island.

Hiking by High Peaks and IcefjordsVisiting Remote Inuit VillagesSailing among beautiful Icebergs.Between alpine like peaks and spires, surrounded by an ocean that is frozen more than half of the year, lies one of the most isolated inhabited region of the planet. Here, the people, as they refer to themselves, survived through the ages by seal hunting and fishing. These are the Inuit of the Ammassalik region. This fantastic hiking trip takes us to three of their highly isolated villages and to a mountain hut in the most incredible ice fjord. Mountains, icebergs, huge glaciers and rivers, form the landscape. Colorful houses, friendly people, howling sled dogs and smiling kids make a unique ambiance. From Sun Gate to Icefjord IMG85

Spectacular Mountain SceneryGreenland Ice Cap View Trekking along the Icefjord. The deep fjords of East Greenland are extraordinary. Deep blue-green sea, steep granite mountains with sharp peaks, lush arctic vegetation around creeks, lakes and ice. Lots of ice! The Sermilik fjord, or the Ice fjord in the local’s language, certainly lives up to its name, it is full of icebergs of all sizes. Several glaciers calve into the fjord and one of them, the Helheim glacier, is thought to be one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world. On the other side of the fjord, one can see the edge of the massif Greenland ice cap, the world’s second biggest ice field. On this tour, we trek from the Qinnertivaq fjord over to the Sermilik fjord and over to the tiny hunters village Tiniteqilaaq. We will pass by a number of impressive alpine granite mountains, try to catch some trout in the sea, enjoy the stillness and quiet, admire the icebergs, tell stories and listen to stories. A unique adventure in breathtaking nature.

Backpacking by the IcefjordGreenland Ice Cap ViewRemote Inuit VillageTake the ultimate East Greenland backpacking trip. This tour truly offers every challenge of good backpacking, crossing narrow valleys and fjords, by high granite peaks that seemingly rise straight from the sea to the sky, and of course fantastic views from beautiful wild camps. The tour takes us to the mountains just East of the Sermilik ice fjord, a place only accessible by foot. Here we will discover the fragile flora and the bird life of the Arctic. We also enjoy views over the enormous amounts of icebergs and drift ice of the Sermilik, also known as the Ice fjord for a reason! Our walk takes us past beautiful lakes and rivers, along the coast of ice filled fjords where the mountains are reflected in the still water of the Arctic summer. We continue on to the hunter´s villages of Tiniteqilaq and then the regional capital Tasiilaq. During the backpacking, we carry provisions for 3 to 4 days at a time, assuring a reasonable limit to the weight of our backpacks.

Spectacular Kayaking in a World of IceDay Hikes in the Arctic WildernessA Taste of the Inuit CultureEast Greenland is famous for its pristine and dramatic landscape, with colossal jagged mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. On this tour you will gain first-hand experience of how the Inuit traveled between various hunting grounds a few generations ago. Paddling in the midst of these frozen giants allows you to see all the colors of it; white, blue, turquoise as well as the size of the icebergs below the surface – a surreal experience that puts things into perspective. It may even happen that a whale surfaces among the ice sculptures or that a curious seal sticks its head up to the surface while icebergs crumble in the distance. During the hikes we take, you will get up close with the forces of nature unlike any other, and immerse yourself in a wilderness carrying the sweet scent of the fragile flora growing in these impossible conditions; in valleys and fjords carved by glaciers for over thousands of years. Reaching town and meeting the vivid inhabitants you will understand why the Inuit is known as “the smiling folk”.

The Highest Peak north of the Arctic Circle“The 8th Continent”Mountains arising from the Greenland Ice CapGreenland’s highest mountain, Mt Gunnbjörn is also the highest peak located north of Arctic Circle. Therefore it doesn’t just hold the title of being the highest peak in Greenland but is also the highest peak of the Arctic.

Because of the huge size of Greenland, Mt Gunnbjörn has been called the 8th continental peak. On Greenland east coast, where massive mountains rise up from the Greenland Icecap the conditions are pristine, not unsimilar to those of the Antarctic. Mt. Gunnbjorn is accessible on ski-plane from Iceland. Once in the Watkins Mountains we set up a comfortable base camp at the foot of the mountain. The Ultimate ExpeditionThe Second Largest Ice Sheet in the WorldDYE 2 - An abandonned Radar StationIcelandic Mountain Guides is organizing its 10th expedition across the Greenland Glacier, the world’s second biggest sheet of ice in April - May of 2016. The course is set to cross the interior of Greenland from Ammassalik/Kulusuk on the East Coast to Sondre Stromfjord on the West Coast. It takes about 10 days to climb up to the highest part of the Ice sheet on this route, topping off at 2500 m. The gradient is gradual and the use of skins make sure that the skis move us forward. From the summit it takes about a week to get to the phantom radar station DYE 2, surely one of the most bizarre buildings on the planet that was used by the US to monitor the Russians during the Cold War. From this strange place it takes from 5 days to get to Terra firma - Hill 660, the landfall on the westerns side of the ice sheet. Depending on the snow conditions and the weather we encounter the expedition can last from 21 - 30 days in total including transport at the beginning and the end. Following Old Dog Sledding TrailsTowering Icebergs in the Frozen SeaVisiting Inuit VillagesThe Ammassalik region on the scanty populated east coast of Greenland is a jewel in the Arctic crown. It is among the world´s most recently known civilizations, discovered a mere hundred years ago. This is an expedition where we follow the traditional dog sledding routes between the small hunting villages of the Ammassalik area. With sharp granite peaks rising up to 2000 m from the narrow fjords we make our way between the gigantic icebergs frozen in to the sea ice in to valleys and over mountain passes. On the way between settlements we sleep in tents under the northern lights or in cabins, but in community houses in the four villages that we visit before we arrive in Tasiilaq, the colorful capital town of the area. During the tour we keep our sledges light by getting good quality fresh food and new supplies in every town. In winter there are few people other than the local Inuit hunters that still use dog sledges for their seal hunting and with two nights in each village we witness the daily life and culture of the local Greenlandic people. This is an expedition that has the perfect mixture of nature and culture.
