The town o Ilulissat has avery impressive neighbour. The world amous UNESCOsite Ilulissat Iceord with itshuge icebergs can be seenrom almost all over town.

The Northern Hemispheresmost productive glacier, Ser-

meq Kujalleq produces about20 million tons o ice eachday, all oating into the Ilulis-sat Ice Fjord and the DiskoBay.

Ilulissat is the third largesttown municipality in Green-land with more than 5000inhabitants. About 4500 peo-

ple live in the town Ilulissat, and 500 people live in the ourremaining small settlements.Did we mention the sleddogs? There is a sled dog orevery person living in Ilulissat that might not be entirelytrue, however there are manysled dogs in the area. In sum-

mer they long or winter andin winter they long to go dogsledding.

I you ever get the chanceto visit Ilulissat you will bewelcomed by a warm popula-tion where old traditions andmodern society go hand inhand.

eay ikig y wHiking in Greenland is mostlydone on rugged unmarkedtracks however in Ilulissatthere are a ew very wellmarked routes that take youalong the Ice Fjord. We recommend two tours,a shorter and a longer one

both can be done as guidedtours where you also getinsights rom the guide. Wedo recommend these guidedtours, especially i your stay inIlulissat is short.

A ay ik t t dttt at t I FjdThis hike is relative easy andtakes about 30-45 minutesrom the centre o town. Ittakes you to a very nice spotat the edge o the Ice Fjordwhere a ormer settlementwas situated. You will needa guide to show you exactlywhere it is, but the place is

beautiul. Do the tour as anevening hike or during the daytime bring some lunch, yourcamera and perhaps a bookand enjoy the view over theIce Fjord.

The route to the edge has awalkway. When you get to the

edge o the Ice Fjord you canwalk up a little hill and getan even more breath-takingview. However to add thislast piece to your tour youneed good level o tnessand balance. It is not at allextreme but very rugged.

T g ikag t I FjdThis is a day tour or thosewho are in normal good physi-cal condition. You walk to theold settlement at the Ice FjordSermermiut and the tourcontinues along the markedroute. You need to bring ood

and extra clothing or a dayin the mountains. The routeis relatively easy but the lastpiece o the tour takes youalong a very stony track. Werecommend this tour or thoseo you who are used to ruggedterrain and nding your wayalong marked paths.
