It’s All About Oil!Global Issues with Fossil Fuels
Becoming scarce and costly – fossil fuels are non-renewable resources, with ‘peak oil’ coming
Creates greenhouse gases, pollution and global warming
Emerging and developed countries rely and compete for cheap energy
Inventories under foreign control – challenges peace
Peak Oil
• The American Petroleum Institute estimated in 1999 the world's oil supply would be depleted between 2062 and 2094, assuming total world oil reserves at between 1.4 and 2 trillion barrels and consumption at 80 million barrels per day.[4]
• In 2004, total world reserves were estimated to be 1.25 trillion barrels and daily consumption was about 85 million barrels, shifting the estimated oil depletion year to 2057.[1]
• The United States Energy Information Administration predicts world consumption of oil will increase to 98.3 million barrels per day in 2015 and 118 million barrels per day in 2030.[5]
Solar Electricity (PV) for Residential
Replaces some or all LIPA provided power
Reduces carbon emissions by utility
Conserves fossil fuels
Provides cost savings to Homeowner
Why LIPA wants you to go Solar:
Burns over 90% fossil fuel
Rates are highest / most unpredictable in the US
Can’t build new power plants to meet growing demand
Under pressure to meet renewable energy quotas
Grid is heavily loaded, risking brownouts and blackouts
Implemented “Solar Pioneers” rebate program
PV – How it Works:Solid-state solar panels (PV) mounted on roof or
racked in yard or integrated w/roof convert sunlight to DC power
Grid-tied inverter converts DC into clean AC power
AC power from inverter is used by house
Any excess turns meter backwards (net metering)
Solar power replaces some/all LIPA power
Incentives• LIPA will pay up to $27,500 of system- currently
2.75 per watt.
• State Tax Credit will pay for 25% of system cost- (capped at $5,000)
• Federal Tax credit will pay for 30% of system cost
• Final out of pocket cost is typically 1/3 of initial cost
• Systems pay for itself in about 6 years.
Ask yourselfWhat are you waiting for?
LIPA’s rates increase on average 5% a year!
The sun will hit your roof everyday, use it!
You can be a part of the solution, and it pays!
Peak oil means drastic increases in energy costs!
It’s about financial freedom from utility!
Solar Domestic Hot Water(DHW)
Solar DHW BenefitsReduces home operating costs
Reduces carbon emissions / use of fossil fuels
Will add value to the home
Adds ‘green’ element for retrofit or new construction
Solar DHW – How it works Sun heats up roof mounted collectors
Controller pumps coolant mix through collectors
Coolant mix heats up water inside storage tank
Hot water is available for household use
Secondary heat source supplements Solar as needed
DHW SuitabilityAccess to the sun for at least three hours a day
Access to area under collectors for hose run
Must have space for storage tank and controller
Have tax liability to apply credits to
Able to make up-front investment
Incentives
Federal Tax credit 30% uncapped
State Tax Credit 25% up to $5000
If using Home Equity Line – interest is tax deductible
DHW Benefit SummaryCuts carbon emissions: up to 5,400lbs/year
Can save up to 240 gallons of oil/year
Reduces dependence on fossil fuels
Velux system integrates attractively
Professional installation by GreenLogic
Reasons to consider Geothermal HVAC
Increase home value
Slow climate change
Reduce dependency on fossil fuels
Reduce operating costs
Meet new standards (LEEDS, HERS..)
Geothermal HVAC benefits detail30-45% lower operating cost than
conventional
Best aesthetics - no outdoor compressors
Long system life - minimum 20 years
High comfort level with proper design
Can be flameless and carbon-free
Qualifies for government and utility incentives
How does it work?Ground below a certain depth is held at
constant temperature by solar radiation (renewable energy)
“Ground loop” allows heat to be drawn from the ground or pumped into the ground
In winter, Geothermal heat pump cools ground and heats house
In summer, Geothermal heat pump cools house and heats ground
Principles Of Operation Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)
