TOXIC FOODS FOR ANIMALS There are a few foods that are safe for humans to eat but some of these may be quite toxic to your animals. These include:

Macadamia nuts: Can cause vomiting, lethargy, hyperthermia, abdominal pain, stiff joints, lameness, tremors or paralysis of the hindquarters. Toxicity can occur after eating as few as six macadamia kernels (nuts without the shell) while others may eat up to forty kernels before showing symp-toms.

Onions: Can cause sickness to dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Animals affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where their red blood cells burst while circu-lating in the body. Initial symptoms are generally vomiting and diarrhoea and poisoning can take a few days to show. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw on-ions, cooked onions and table scraps c o n t a i n i n g c o o k e d o n i o n s . Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion.

Xylitol: This is a popular sugar substi-tute found in many types of lollies, toothpaste, chewable vitamins, sugar-less baked goods and in sugar-free gum. As little as 3g (about five pieces of gum) can kill a 30kg dog. It can cause hypoglycemia-induced seizures and sometimes fatal liver failure. Xylitol poi-sonings are occurring more often due to the increased use of this sweetener

in many foods.

Grapes and raisins: Within a few hours of eating these, affected dogs and cats will usually vomit and will be lethargic. They may develop diarrhoea and will usually show increased water consump-tion. Partially digested grapes or raisins are sometimes seen in the dog's vomit. The risk with grape and raisin toxicity is renal failure and this can be fatal. Green Tomatoes: Leaves and stems (all green parts of the plant). Also avoid green potatoes.

Yeast Dough: This can expand after eating and result in gas, pain and possi-ble rupture of the stomach or intes-tines.

Corn cobs: Can cause intestinal block-age requiring surgical removal.

Coffee & tea: Contain caffeine, theo-bromine or theophylline which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and be toxic to the heart and nervous system. Can result in increased breathing and heart rate, restlessness and can affect the central nervous system.

Chocolate: Contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. It can cause a dog to become excited and hyperactive, with excess thirst and urination. Vomiting and diarrhoea are also common. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart

t o b e a t i r r e g u l a r l y . Signs of toxicity can sometimes take s e v e r a l h o u r s t o s h o w . Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10kg dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or 125g of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate.

Walnuts: Can cause gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as respiratory issues such as sneezing, breathing and cough-ing.

Rhubarb Leaves: Can cause problems with the digestive, nervous and urinary systems.

Mouldy food: Can contain multiple tox-ins resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea and can also affect other organs. Benzoic acid / sodium benzoate is a preservative that is toxic to cats. Other toxins include hops from beer brewing, some mushrooms, sesame seeds, mustard seeds and alcohol.

*Note: very small amounts of alcohol used in medicines is okay.

Seek veterinary attention immediately if your animal shows symptoms of poisoning after eating any toxic food.

(In our next issue, we will list some of the foods and plants that are toxic to horses.)

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK VET’S ALL NATURAL COMPLETE MIX “I have two Shitzu Poodles, sisters (11 years old). One has - sorry, HAD, daily epi-sodes of muscle cramping/spasms that look like a seizure. Awful things that would last up to 10 minutes. She has had all the tests under the sun and nothing showed. I have done my own research and I consider it to be Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome (Spikes Disease). This dog was on a twice daily dose of Clomicalm (a sedative). The sister is susceptible to skin problems - REAL skin problems, itching and warts. I have recently spent a fortune on the re-moval of about 40 warts from this poor puppy and have tried all sorts of food changes, and immune boosting alterna-tives for both of them. I started them on the Complete Mix for sensitive skin mixed with kangaroo meat (and some beef, de-pending where I buy the meat from) to-gether with Omega oil mix and the 5 mushroom drops offered on this website (for the sister with itches) and after 1 week I stopped medication to the dog with the seizures (only had one incident recently) and her sister's skin has settled amazingly. I'm hooked and my dogs have finally got some relief. I can't thank Greenpet enough. “ GREENPET SHOW CONFIDENCE “I used your Show Confidence drops on my Barrel racing horse recently with great results. He has enormous potential but would always just cruise around at a com-petition and not really try. This time he tried the hardest he's ever done and won money against much more experienced horses. He was much calmer and did seem to have more confidence, I'm thrilled with the result.”

GREENPET FLEEZE SUPPLEMENT “I've been using this for some time and found that Bingo does not have a prob-lem with fleas. My local park has a flea infestation every summer and to be on the safe side, after a walk through it I'll run a flea comb through him. It may pick up 1 or 2 fleas occasionally. Oth-ers I speak to are using chemical prod-ucts with no relief. I'm always recom-mending this product. “

VET’S ALL NATURAL OMEGA BLEND “I have a 4 year old full blooded Ger-man Shepherd. Sasha suffered with dry flaky skin. I have tried everything possible. I was then advised to use the omega blend to help with her coat. I have never gone back. One tablespoon with her meat every night and her coat is so shiny. Every time I take her out for a walk, I always get commented on how wonderful she and her coat looks. Highly recommend this product. Thank you so much FINALLY a natural product that works.” NERVE TONIC CAPSULES “I have been using the Greenpet Nerve Tonic tablets/capsules for more than 10 years. They are excellent for nerv-ous dogs especially show dogs and I have also used the tablets for a Ger-man shepherd puppy showing signs of separation anxiety. I find by giving my show dog one cap-sule daily and then two capsules approx 2 days daily before shows the overall fear of the show ring is dissi-pated and the dog is able to relax and learn to enjoy the new surroundings. I have recommended this product to many of my dog-showing friends and they have had the same success.”

VET’S ALL NATURAL COMPLETE MIX “We got our first pug in Jan 2012 and after researching different feeds we decide to try Vets All Natural. Within a week, a lifeless, drab pug turned into a healthy and active pug. We get so many compliments on him and how soft and shiny his coat is. Now if he eats any-thing else, he throws it straight back up, so grateful for V.A.N. Last week we got our second pug and we have put her on V.A.N. too and she loves it and we can already see a softening of her coat and a more calmer dog. W e highly recommend trying this product, you and your dogs wont look back.”

COLOSTRUM POWDER “I purchased this for my Shetland sheepdog who has an extremely rare untreatable collagen deficiency syndrome. She has just had bilateral cruciate ligaments operated on before finding out this disease was the reason her legs had collapsed and ligaments stretched. As I speak she is undergoing an adipose stem cell transplant for her legs. I have given greenpet colostrum to her and my other sheltie for a few months and when they don’t have it for a day you really can tell. It has helped both of them through chest infections and quick recovery from surgery for Charlotte. After adding it to her supple-ment diet she is like a two year old again (she is now nine years old) want-ing to be extremely active to run and play ball. I believe that it has made a real differ-ence in her overall general health and am just about to order more online. Thankyou Greenpet, a fabulous product.”

GLOW GROOM TEAR STAIN REMOVER “Just a note to let you know how pleased I am with this product I have two white Bichon’s who had very bad eye stains after using this product for a couple of weeks I have noticed a re-markable difference with the staining it has almost gone. Thanks.”

GREENPET ESSENTIALS “Have had both my cats on this product for a few months and when my sister visited she said that their fur was re-markably soft... I realised it must be the Greenpet Essentials working for them! The cats are so soft, shiny and bright eyed.” BLESSED HERBS COLON CLEANSING KIT “I have now used this product twice and it is Fantastic! If you follow the plan as directed the results are just as the booklet says! I thought I was fairly healthy and would not experience the results as dramatically but I was wrong. My results were just as the cleanse de-scribes. I felt great afterwards! Highly recommend this!”

TICK TWISTER “These are fantastic and I am so glad I picked up a pack when I dropped into the store. We just needed to remove 5 ticks from our great Dane, 3 very little ones and 2 bigger ones. The two sizes worked well, very easy to use and twisting them out with this fan-tastic tool, meant all of them were re-moved head intact, and still alive. A lot easier than tweezers and trying to get a grip on them without squeezing them.”

HOMEOPATHIC FORMULAS

“My dog Bomber arrived here aged 10

with little warts on both his eyelids.

Around Easter 2012 one wart started to

get big and bleed, growing through

both sides of his eyelid, irritating his

eye, oozing mucous and sometimes

pus. The vet said it was a skin tag and

suggested surgical removal but Bomber

is now 13 y.o. and didn't want to take

the risk so managed with anti-inflam

and anti-biotic ointment which con-

trolled irritation and the infection but

did not stop the wart from growing.

At its worst it was the size of a big gar-

den pea and bled a lot and Bomber was

miserable as he couldn't shut his eye

properly and the wart kept rubbing his

eyeball. My children had success eradi-

cating warts using thuja ointment but

obviously I couldn't put that in his eye,

so tried this Greenpet product used as

a spot-on between his shoulder blades

each Mon and Thurs in early June.

Within a very short time I was able to

stop using the ointment as the bleeding

stopped and the wart was not longer

swollen and irritated. His eye became

less irritated also, the wart itself began

to get smaller and now in early August

it has receded to the original size, is dry

and looks exactly like a wart again

rather than a bloated tick.

I will keep on using the remedy until it's

all gone in the hope the wart disap-

pears completely but am SO happy with

just this return to original size ... and

Bomber is pretty happy too!”

SPRING WARNING FOR HORSES

Early Spring grass can be a problem for many horses. The most common being Insulin resistance, Laminitis and Founder along with digestive distur-bances or Colic.

I would like to focus on Subclinical Laminitis which is a mild form or early stage of Laminitis where the horse may not show the typical acute symptoms of Laminitis but may show very mild symptoms without lameness.

Laminitis is most commonly caused by digestive upset from a diet that is high in sugar NSC's (non-structural carbohy-drates) which affects the feet.

Horses that are more susceptible are those that are overweight, not in regu-lar work and those that have suffered from previous bouts of Laminitis along with horses that have had severe sole abscesses. Horses that are not trimmed regularly may also be more prone to this. (If this is the case, every 4 weeks is recommended rather than 8 weeks or longer.)

Horses eating diets high in grains, lucerne, clover, molasses and green growing grass (especially short grass with new shoots) are also more sus-ceptible.

Stresses such as travelling, competing, over-training, vaccinations, chemical de-worming and other medications can also predispose a horse to lamini-tis.

If your horse or pony displays a few of the following, then they may be suffer-ing from sub-clinical Laminitis.

Prominent growth rings on the hoof wall.

Dished hoof wall with flared out long toes (and often low compacted heals).

Hoof wall separation.

Crumbly white line, flaky soles and broken hoof edges.

Sore front feet which is more notice-able on hard ground.

Shortened gait that doesn't improve with exercise and worsens with fast and hard work.

Is sound on soft ground but may limp or stumble on hard or stony ground.

Reluctance to pick feet up.

Frequently shifting weight from one foot to the next.

Blood stains visible in the white line or hoof wall.

Horse seems lazy and less forward moving.

Stiff legged gait.

Okay when going straight but un-comfortable doing circles.

Raised digital pulse.

If the condition worsens and they develop Laminitis, they will display tenderness walking on any surface and have a strong ‘bounding’ digital pulse in the feet indicating increased blood flow and inflammation (heat) of the

area. This may then develop further with pedal bone rotation and solar penetration, known as ‘Founder’. It is a good idea to regularly check your horses digital pulse so you know if it increases. (You can view You Tube videos online to show how to check your horses digital pulse.)

So what can you do to help prevent Laminitis?

Restrict access to green grass during the later part of the day and at night, and feed plenty of grassy hay.

Soak hay for at least 1 or 2 hours. This will leach out a lot of the sugar.

Don’t lock horses or ponies in small ‘diet yards’ and starve them. Horses need to eat regularly and must be sup-plied with plenty of grass hay if locked up overnight.

Feed a good organic balanced mineral supplement daily.

Add a good quality organic magnesium supplement.

Feed a probiotic to help stabilize hind gut.

Contact the clinic for information about the range of natural supple-ments and remedies we have to assist horses with Laminitis.

ponies ‘Mister’
