Fall Course Work—# 3 Green: Chip Lafferty: Superintendent
Greens Update
We have had trouble with number 3 green for quite
sometime and feel it is time to really address all the
issues with this green to finally get a playing surface
we have all grown to expect here at Rye Golf Club.
Number 3 suffers due to three main issues, its rela-
tively small size and lack of traffic patterns, poor
sunlight and air circulation and finally the accumula-
tion of organic matter near the surface which is ex-
acerbated by the above mentioned problems. We
started the process this past Monday by removing
several trees between 3 green, 4 tee, 6 tee and 5
green to address the sunlight and air flow. To fix the
other problems we will strip the entire surface of the
green off which will eliminate the built up organic
matter in the top inch of the surface and amend the
surface with the same sand we used in the internal
drain lines installed last year. This will make the
drains work better and get the surface water to the
drain lines quicker. We will then re-contour the exist-
ing surface to improve the surface water drainage
and incorporate the adjacent areas into the new
greens surface, making the green bigger with more
“cuppable “ hole locations. The new surface will
extend back a few feet towards the tee and out on
the right side a few feet, making the whole green
completely visible from the tee. The outside edges
towards the back mainly will be softened to allow
for easy entrance and exit from the surface to in-
crease the traffic patterns both on and off the
green. Once all of these steps are taken, the new
green and adjacent disturbed areas will be re-
sodded and remain closed the remainder of the
season to allow for complete knitting and rooting of
new sod. By addressing all of the factors that con-
tribute to this green’s difficulties, we can begin a
new era of 3 green being one of our best surfaces
and not the one that holds us back.
I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weather we are experiencing this fall and takes advantage by
coming out to the club to play a few holes and enjoy the company of fellow members. We have many
exciting improvements planned for later this fall that I would like to try to explain to you.
The other projects we will be working on later
this fall is the DEC approval and completion of
master plan down on 7 green, 8tee, 8 green and
9 tee. The main focus will be to separate the
championship tee from the men’s tee on 8 and
rerouting the cart path behind the new men’s
tee. This work will increase the teeing space for
both men and women alike and change the an-
gle of play out to the 8th fairway and increase our
aesthetic views of Milton harbor and the boat
basin. On the 8th green we will remove the sand
contamination on the left bunker, reestablish
drainage in both bunkers and re-sod the entire
green complex to match the rest of the golf
course. Once this is finished we will install new
sand in both bunkers left and right too again
match the other bunkers on the course. The 9th
tee will remain in the same place, but will be re-
leveled and re-sodded to match the other tees
on the golf course with low cut blue grass. On
the 7th green, new drains will be installed in the
green to help in the spring and fall when this
green is very wet and the front left bunker will be
eliminated and the right bunker slightly realigned
to tie into the new 8th tee and 7th green together
with a fescue strip installed between the two for
separation and overall continuity with the rest of
the golf course. Once these are accomplished
new sod will be installed around the green creating a
new collar along with new rough sod to again match
the rest of the golf courses green surrounds.
Once we complete all of the above projects this fall a
few minor details will be address this spring before the
season starts, which will finally complete the original
golf course master plan that was put in place almost 10
years ago. I think everyone who remembers the course
before appreciates the work that has been accom-
plished but I will be the first to tell everyone, we have
only scratched the surface in improving Rye Golf Club
and many more improvements still need to be accom-
plished in the future to truly appreciate the potential
this beautiful little property has to offer. Thanks for your
continued understanding and patience and I look for-
ward to seeing you out there.

For the ladies
Rye Golf club has success-
fully transitioned to a club that does not discriminate by gender in that all of the major championships held here are now held at the same time for both men and women.
We do, however, continue to host “ladies day” each Tuesday. The events are posted on the ladies tour-nament board with a new event each week. The events are fun, easy and a great way to get involved in competitive golf without a lot of stress. Call us in the golf shop for details.

Green Maintenance
We just completed Dry-jecting the greens followed by Planet-aire, both processes work to improve the soils physical proper-ties. These practices used together have a synergistic affect on the soil profile and turf and are relatively non- disruptive to the putting surface, but at the same time are very beneficial for the turf plants growing on the greens. This deep verti-cutting overtime creates a finer leaf blade on the surface and greater turf density, which translate into a better playing sur-face after continuous use. We have been using this machine for two seasons and are already seeing the results of this critical program. Our next aeration with top dressing is scheduled for June 17.
Plantings
We have planted 36 evergreens through-out the property to replace storm dam-aged trees and help to screen some of
the more unsightly areas of the property. Additionally, with this we have re-soded around the entire pool deck and volley ball court and planted all the annual flow-ers at both the castle and pool entrance.
We have more beautification in the works for the parking lot area and around the pro shop and administration building. This will be accomplished with Knock out roses and periwinkles both are perennials and will give us lasting blooms through-out the season without the continued cost of buying annuals every year
Course projects
Looking forward we plan on paving the switch back cart paths on 5 and 18 with binder coat to solidify those paths for now until we can pave them and we are also planning on splitting a great number of ornamental grasses to continue the grass theme down the Post Road on several mounds we had built earlier in the year .
