Dear Parents/ Carers Welcome to the final half term of the academic year and a special ‘welcome’ to those parents/ carers with daughters and sons in Y6 who may be leaving us in just 7 short weeks! Those 7 weeks will speed by but we have lots of fun, learning and events planned for every day! We really hope that our fortnightly Newsletter, Hall Screen with weekly news and regular texts and e-mails is keeping you all up-to-date with events and information at Greenside; as always if you have any questions or thoughts about what we could do better at Greenside please contact us. We have a big focus over the next few weeks on our ‘Charity & Celebration’ project – we do appreciate every single penny and way in which you are able to help. Wishing everyone a great Greenside summer term 2. 1. STAR Days – Summer Term 2 All of our classes will be returning to their theory of Film studies this half term as they are inspired by a film text that features Music in an interesting or significant way and a novel that will compliment this theme. May I remind you all that our Medium Term STAR Day Learning Experiences are available now on our web-site. These provide a guide to the programmes of study, National Curriculum references and also outline the exciting Learning Experiences that each class will be engaging with over the next 7 weeks. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact your daughter/ son’s Class teacher directly. Nursery - Ratatouille Reception - Ratatouille Y1 – Happy Feet Y2 – The Sound of Music Y3 – Camelot Y4 – West Side Story Y5 – Hair Spray Y6 – Madagascar Nursery & Reception - Ratatouille Ms Buchanan tells us: “This week, Nursery have been immersed in their film Ratatouille and have been learning all about the country France, where it is set. The students learnt more about French food and explored their love for food and cooking when making baguettes this week! They measured the ingredients, kneaded the dough, watched it prove, then after it was baked, and ate it all with some butter and French jam! Delicious!” Ms Morra declares: “As part of our food topic this half term, Reception has been studying the film Ratatouille. The film is about a rat named Remy who aspires to be a top chef in Paris, France. The students have enjoyed watching the film and learning about French culture. We tasted a variety of French food like baguettes and cheese, and we created some artwork inspired by the Eiffel Tower”. Penguin Mad! Y1 has gone penguin mad! We can't wait to explore Happy Feet in our learning this half term. We will be using our STEM skills to recreate our own Antarctica and learn about this unique continent. We will be immersing ourselves in the world of music and animation as well as we write our own heart song and animate our own penguin stories! The Sound of Music in Y2 This term Y2 are headed to Salzburg, as we explore the wonderful world of The Sound of Music. This film has already captured our imaginations as we have been drawn into the lives of the Von Trapp family, their songs and their exciting escape from the Nazis over the mountains to Switzerland. We were particularly taken by the moment where Maria makes outfits for the 7 Von Trapp children from the curtains in her room and we were inspired to make some of our own. We have big plans for puppet shows, concerts and apple strudel - what a time to be in Y2!” Breaking Boundaries Issue: 16 Date: Friday 9th June 2017 Newsletter from the Greenside Film Factory Camera Sound Lights Camera Sound Lights Learning is Everything, Everything is Learning

STAR Days – Summer Term 2 All of our classes will be returning to their theory of Film studies this half term as they are inspired by a film text that features Music in an interesting or significant way and a novel that will compliment this theme. Y4 Travel to West Side Story Ms Samuel explains: “Y4 have travelled back to New York in the 1950s to revel in the all-singing, all-dancing spectacular musical West Side Story! As it is based on the story of Romeo and Juliet, the students have enjoyed matching the characters from the musical to their counterparts in Shakespeare's play. Y4 also loved creating playing cards for 'West Side Story Top Trumps' in which we compared the style, talents and emotions of the different characters. We also predicted whether West Side Story would have the same tragic ending as the Romeo and Juliet. Did it? You'll have to watch for yourselves! Baltimore Calling in Y5! Mr Johnson says: “This term we are turning back the clocks to 1960's Baltimore to explore the wonderful world of 'Hairspray' we are going to engage in a wealth of projects inspired by the film including building Baltimore town, looking after flour children, building Baltimore bridge as well as designing our own instruments. It promises to be an exciting topic with which to bring our year to a close”. 2. “Alice in Green Wonderland” Many thanks for all the support parents/ carers have given over half term – all of our performers need to be off script this week (and by next Tuesday at the latest) We are all learning ‘Day Dream Believer and music is filling the Greenside air! Tickets for ‘Alice’ will be on sale from the Office next week – we are charging £2.00 for adults (students under 16 are free). We are making a charge this time to raise money for our Charity & Celebration project so thank you in advance for supporting this venture. We will also be selling raffle tickets from next week – they will cost £1.00 and there are 2 prizes. One is an amazing bouquet of flowers worth £50.00 and the other is a signed ‘Alice’ programme with a personal message to the winner by Stephen Daldry (Film and Theatre Director). After a winner has been drawn Stephen will write and sign a personal message (an amazing prize for one of our performers!) If you win you can nominate the message to be written for anyone! Hope I win that prize! 3. Music Crews – Film Location Day The General Election Day gave us a great reason to get out and do our on location Music video filming yesterday. We are producing lots of exciting videos for a public viewing at the end of term and our students are learning lots about the history of Music, different genres and of course the technology involved in filming and editing – such great World Ready skills! Music Crew 1 Crew one hit the streets of Shepherds Bush to 'Twist and Shout' Beatles style for the whole community. People saw us rocking out at Damas Gate, Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush market and Cathnor Park. You're gonna need your dancing shoes and singing voice when you see this music video! Music Crew 2 On Thursday, our band Beatside International - a world music group, headed off on location to Holland Park so we could film our first music video. We danced among the peacocks, the box hedges and the woodland as we filmed the backdrop for our version of Bob Marley's Three Little Birds. The Crew put together some very thoughtful routines and really thought about how to interpret the lyrics through their staging. On the way back we filmed a compilation of dance sequences in various locations around Shepherds Bush to reflect our world music theme - you will see we even danced inside the Damas Gate shop! A great effort from Crew 2! Music Crew 3 Yesterday Music Crew 3 took advantage of an empty Greenside site and turned it into our own music making work-shop studio. We set up a workshop for choreography, song writing and set design where students were even able to show the teachers a thing or two! Watch this space for further news! Music Crew 4 With our trip to Richmond cancelled due to the poor weather we made the best use that we could of Cathnor Park where we managed to choreograph and film a music video to the Marvelette's classic 'Mr Postman'. Students carefully crafted the dance and pulled off a real showstopper of a performance. We also had the opportunity to rehearse and film some of our group performances ready for our big showcase in July. Magnificent moments from Motown Madness! Music Crew 5 Crew 5 had a far out time at The Phoenix Fitness Centre. We used their studio to ‘boogie down’ and show off some of our disco dance moves, such as the hustle, for our music videos. Can you dig it?

9. Charity & Celebration Our collection to support Refugees and the Good Chance Theatre Project has been fantastic – our recent sponsored event afternoon and lose change collection. We are asking all TEF Schools to hold a special collection on Friday 16

th June. The aim is for every student and staff

member in all of our Academies across the country to donate £1.00 that day for charity. Students should ideally ‘give something up’ that week – sweets, ice-cream etc. and donate the money instead. We would be most grateful if all of our students could bring £1.00 that day. Also look out for more information on The Great Elliot Bake Off! Our Greenside Baking Round is on Tuesday 4

th

July. A chance to bake your way to fame! 10. PE/ Sports kit requirements A reminder to all parents / carers that all students should wear correct PE kit on Friday which is Greenside T-shirt, polo or jumper, Greenside green shorts, trainers. If students are wearing tracksuit bottoms as well, these should be plain (no big logos etc.) and dark green, black or dark grey.

4. EYFS - Mini-Beast Trip

As part of our Mini-beast learning last half term, Nursery and Reception walked to Ravenscourt Park for a Mini-beast hunt. The students gathered in groups of two with pencils and clipboards. They searched around the park to investigate and observe the different insects. This trip helped the students to identify and classify living things in the environment. They were all great STEM Learners! 5. Family Meeting - Food Experience update Ms Webber tells us: “Following our meeting with families this week and our very successful year of feeding our Greenside community, we are pleased to share our plans for the next academic year. From September 2017 all of our students from Nursery to Y4 will have a Greenside lunch. We will honour our commitment to packed lunch to those students in Y5 & 6 but this will we phased out over the next two years. Students in Reception, Y1 & 2 will continue to receive lunch under the Universal Infant Free School Meal scheme, lunch for our other students will continue to be charged at £2 a day. Our lunches represent very good value for money and we are continually driven to provide interesting, nutritious and delicious food that all our students can share together. Our vegetable garden is really coming on and so far we have supplied the kitchen with copious amounts of lettuce and kale. The potatoes are on their way, as are the strawberries and the celery. We are very grateful for your continuing support and here's to another year of fabulous lunches.” 6. Revealed at last………Y6 Leaver’s Play 2017! Ms Davies & Mr Yeats proudly announce: “The wait is over. The votes have been counted and verified and the choice for this years' Y6 Leaver's play is.........MADAGASCAR! Join Y6 as they try to escape the New York Zoo and get back to the wild. The auditions are over so the rehearsals begin in earnest next week. Y6 are super excited and this is a really talented bunch so don't miss it!” 7. Federation Partnership We are delighted that over the net half term Kimberley Buchanan will go over to support Griffin School on most Wednesday and Thursdays. This is possible because of the capacity brought with Anneka Thé’s return this half term. Anneka will teach the Nursery Class on the days that Kimberley is out. We hope this will help our Nursery students get ready for Reception and that we will be helping the EYFS team at Griffin too. 8. CPD Days in September We are all excited about our Federation work from September and we have now been given an additional ‘set up’ day to ensure our students get an enhanced experience and get to enjoy some activities together across Greenside, Griffin and Lena Gardens. Please note this means our Staff will be at work on Monday 4

th, Tuesday 5

th and

Wednesday 6th September. These days will all be CPD days and closed to students – parents/ carers who asked for

dates earlier in the term (before the Federation) were told we had only 2 CPD Days – apologies for this change. All of our students in Y1 to Y6 will return at 8.55am on Thursday 7

th September.

Our Reception students who are new to Greenside join us on Thursday 7th September.

Our Reception students who have been at our Greenside Nursery will join us on Friday 8th September.

Our new Nursery students will be given letters with start days.

11. Tea & Cakes Tea & Cakes is such a wonderful Greenside tradition and one of the things that makes our community so special. From time to time we remind everyone that it is imperative that your daughters and sons are in your view at all times during Tea and Cakes. Our students are the responsibility of parents/ carers at all times before 9.00am and after 3.30pm. Please ensure your children do not ride their scooters/ bikes on site and remind them to play carefully and respect all people and property when Tea & Cakes and/ or clubs are taking place. Greenside Teachers are often in scheduled meetings at 3.45pm and so parents/ carers need to assume full responsibility at these times – many thanks in anticipation, as always. 12. Phonics Screening A reminder that all of our Y1 students will complete a Phonics Screening Check during the week commencing Monday 12

th June. Ms. Medcalf will carry out the check, just 5 minutes per student.

Students will be segmenting, blending and identifying ‘real and ‘alien’ words. All students in Y1 will be part of the Screening programme. If you have any questions – please ask. 13. The New Y1! This week, Reception students started their transition work and getting ready for Y1! For the rest of this half term each Thursday our Reception students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of KS1 teachers and experience grown up Y1 lessons! These weekly 45-minute sessions will be crucial in helping students to understand the expectations and structure of learning in KS1, and will mean a flying start in September. 14. A Greenside Student Act of Kindness Maisey in Y2 returned to Greenside with 8 inches missing from her golden locks!! She told us: "I wanted to help children with cancer. I cut my hair and my mum is going to send it to a charity for children who have lost their hair because of cancer" What a worthwhile cause. Well-done Maisey!! 15. Nursery dismissal All Nursery parents/ carers are reminded that starting on Monday 12th, Nursery students will no longer be brought into class by parents/ carers, but will be met and greeted in the playground in the mornings, where they will line up on the side closest to the hall, and be taken into class by teachers. Please ensure your daughter/ son is in the line before 8:55am- don't be late! Parents/ carers will say goodbye to their children in the line, and will no longer escort them to the classroom. This will be crucial in helping students in the transition into Reception, and we ask that all parents/ carers make a special effort to be on time, and help their child's independence when beginning the school day as positively as possible. 16. Great TEF Bake-Off We are delighted to invite our Families to participate in The Great TEF Bake Off. There will be 2 stages: Stage 1 – Greenside round (Tuesday 4
