MOD EL GARD EN
In our model garden in Wassenaar, we test all perennial plants
extensively before using them in practical applications.
p e r e n n i a l p l a n t s i n p u b l i c g r e e n s p a c e s
As of 2017, GreentoColour® boasts a history of about 13 years and has
fulfilled its original mission: to restore perennial plants to public spaces.
In the meantime, we have executed more than 2,300 projects with
perennial plants.
The following pages provide an explanation of the GreentoColour®
concept. This concept has proven its value by using a comprehensive
approach. The choice of plants, groundwork, quality of the plants, and
the way they are tended are all equally crucial to success.
That is why you will not find a 'plant list' or 'best varieties', because
merely choosing the right variety does not guarantee successful planting
if, for example, the groundwork has not been done properly. Fortunately,
more and more clients are now starting to adopt this point of view.
While driving past some projects we executed with a client, he gave us
one of our favourite compliments: "the reality is even more beautiful than
the pictures". Perhaps you could try to see the following pages through
his eyes.
With kind regards,
Griffioen Wassenaar BV

THE CONCEPT
g r e e n t o c o l o u r
Choosing GreentoColour® means to choose colour, flair, biodiversity and dense covering in public spaces, all achieved within one year.
GreentoColour® is based on the cost of management. To keep maintenance easy, we do not use mixtures or open-space landscaping.
Perennial plants must comply with 21 conditions in order to be included in our range. GreentoColour® takes landscaping to the highest possible
level, while keeping operating costs low compared with grass or traditional shrub plantation, due to low maintenance levels. Beautiful wintery
landscapes, enormous biodiversity and the plants' very long lifespan are just the icing on the cake.
In order to live up to this guaranteed promise, GreentoColour® applies a unique formula that is based on 4 pillars: the right plant in the right place, soil preparation, the use of 8 plants of P11 quality per m² and a
maintenance plan, an important part of which is short-mowing/mulching/fertilising in March.
Choose GreentoColour® to achieve a densely covered, colourful result with perennial plants in public spaces within a year.
Be inspired by the unedited pictures in this brochure and at www.greentocolour.com.

1 THE R IGHT PL A NT IN THE R IGHT PL ACE
A tailored planting plan is made for each location and situation. Using a range of
perennial plants in compliance with our 21 conditions.
N EP ETA
With several varieties of Nepeta – there are three new varieties – weed growth can be quickly and effectively suppressed. Suitable
for dry places.
GERANIUM
The nursery carries 45 varieties in its assortment. Only 10 of these are used for GreentoColour®: only those
that provide proper soil cover and remain permanently healthy.
HE ME R OCALL IS
There are 20 types available within GreentoColour®. Hemerocallis is a favourite
in warm spots where road salt is used.
PERS ICARIA
A nearly perfect plant where high and fast covering is required.
Known for its red colour, but also very decorative in
white and pink.
GRASSES
GreentoColour® uses grasses rather sparingly, for the
simple reason that although they initially often conform to the desired plan, in later
years they often grow so big that they can dominate the entire appearance of a plot. In addition, dense covering
and ornamental value are not without problems for certain
times of year.

Quick results are achieved by planting eight units of heavy P11-quality perennial
plants per m 2. Because the large root balls contain significant nutritional and moisture
reserves, teething problems are prevented and watering is virtually unnecessary.

HOEIN G IS AL L OW ED !
Hoeing with a narrow hoe is quick and easy in the first part of the season. Root
weeds are best removed by hand. Ask Griffioen for the "weed card", to know
the difference between seed weeds, root weeds and perennial plants.
KEEPING TH INGS T IDY , RATHER THAN CLEANING
Immediately after planting and during spring, weeds have a chance against perennial plants. If frequent,
short maintenance is carried out during this period, overall maintenance pressure will be minimal.

5 LOW MA INTE NA NCE A ND LONG S E RVICE L IFE
Maintenance, including annual fertilising, mowing, and mulching in March, ensures
plants have a long service life. As a consequence, the perennial plants renew themselves each year and do not have to
be removed. In addition, mulching makes them fuller and the crop remains about 30%
lower, which also makes it firmer.
