To All District Deputies, Exalted Rulers, officers and members: This month is very special to Elks. June 14 is the day we, and the Nation, celebrate the free-doms, which are symbolized by the American Flag. As Elks we were the first organization to honor our Flag in recognition of all it stands for. This magnificent banner may have changed over time, but what it stands for never will. Do you know what the colors of our Flag stand for? RED: signifies hardiness and valor. WHITE: signifies purity and innocence. BLUE: vigilance, persever-ance and justice. All of these are the attributes of our great Nation and the honored veterans who served and sacrificed for us. Be sure that your lodge holds a dignified and informative Flag Day Service that lets your community know that Elks are proud Americans who honor the Flag of our Nation.

June 17 is Father’s Day. Plan a family activity at the lodge to show “Dad” that we truly appreciate him and all he has done for us. The lodge’s Audit Report is due no later than June 30. Ensure that your Lodge Audit is promptly filed with the correct Area Member of the Grand Lodge Auditing and Accounting Committee. Failure to do so could result in a $100 fine to the lodge. The Exalted Ruler’s plans to attend the Grand Lodge Session in Charlotte should be complete. It is the obligation of every Exalted Ruler to attend the session, participate in the deliberations and report back to their lodge the business and decisions of the assembled delegates. The first quarter of the lodge year ends this month. You should review your progress against the goals you have set for your lodge’s and Grand Lodge programs. Make the needed adjustments to assure the success of your lodge year. With dedication and perseverance to your programs and faithful adherence to your obligation, you and your lodge will con-tinue to demonstrate that "Elks Care — Elks Share." Arthur H. Frost III, Grand Exalted Ruler

OH TO BE A WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mid-life is when the growth of hair on our legs slows down. This gives us plenty of time to care for our newly acquired mustache. In mid-life women no longer have upper arms, we have wing spans. We are no longer women in sleeveless shirts, we are flying squirrels in drag. Mid-life is when you can stand naked in front of a mirror and you can see your rear without turning around. Mid-life is when you go for a mammogram and you realize that this is the only time someone will ask you to appear topless. Mid-life is when you want to grab every firm young

lovely in a tube top and scream, "Listen honey, even the Roman empire fell and those will too." Mid-life brings wisdom to know that life throws us curves and we're sitting on our biggest ones. Mid-life is when you look at your-know-it-all, beeper-wearing teenager and think: "For this I have stretch marks?" In mid-life your memory starts to go. In fact the only thing we can retain is water. Mid-life means that your Body By Jake now includes Legs By Rand McNally -- more red and blue lines than an accu-rately scaled map of Wisconsin. But mid-life also brings with it an appreciation for what is important. We realize that breasts sag, hips expand and chins double, but our loved ones make the journey worthwhile. Would any of you trade the knowledge that you have now, for the body you had way back when? Maybe our bodies simply have to expand to hold all the wisdom and love we've acquired. That's my philosophy and I'm sticking to it!

Greenville Elks Lodge 858 PER Association Meet-ing: At 7:30 PM, on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. This is a “mandatory” organization per Grand Lodge statutes. All PER’s are encouraged to attend, and have an input on things going

around “your” lodge. We are getting close to paying off our mortgage, come and be part of future planning for our growth. Bob Cher PER Chairman

NATIONAL CONVENTION

The Elks National Convention is in nearby Charlotte, N. Carolina. Rooms at the hotel assigned to S. Caro-lina are still available through George Bloodworth of the Charleston Lodge. Your registration for the convention can be done at the Elks national website, or at the con-vention itself when you get there. If you have never been to an Elks National Convention, this is probably your best opportunity. I found it to be really impressive to attend the Opening Ceremony (Sunday Night) and be part of 8,000 plus Elks and their guests. It is a emo-tionally moving experience. The convention is 8-12 July, 2007.

SUMMER CONVENTION

FLAG DAY CEREMONY

Come join the Officers, members, and guests of the Greenville Elks Lodge # 858 June 10 at 2:00 PM for a traditional Flag Day Ceremony, which will include the retirement of flags. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated June 14th as Flag Day in 1907. In 1911, the Grand Lodge of the Order adopted the observance of Flag Day as mandatory for every Lodge, and the requirement contin-ues today. To the Elks, the American flag is an emblem used in its ritual; it represents freedom and is a symbol of unity in God, to country, and to fellowman. In 1949, President Harry Truman himself an Elk, proclaimed June 14th as Flag Day for the nation. If you have any flags in need of retirement, please bring the, folded appropriately, to the lodge to be included in the event. If you need help folding you flag, we will gladly assist you. A potluck dinner will be served following the ceremony. It has been a tough year on flags; too many flags are flying in our community, faded and tattered. Please help us spread the word about our Flag Day ceremony by clipping this announcement and sharing it with anyone in your neighborhood who has a flag in need of retirement. That way, when it comes the time that they have a replacement flag to fly, they will also know where to have the “Old Glory” properly retired from service. They are most welcome to attend the ceremony and to retire their flag in person. Please invite them to attend with you June 10th.

BPO ELKS PLEDGES AID TO GREENSBURG, KANSAS, TORNADO VICTIMS

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA today (May 8) pledged its assistance to the victims of the deadly tornado that struck the Kansas town of Greensburg on May 4. The catastrophic twister left 9 dead and nearly all of the town’s 1,500 residents homeless. Arthur H Frost III, the national president of the BPO Elks has asked the nearly 1 million members of the Elks nationwide to lead the way in offering disaster relief to the victims, many of whom have seen the work of a lifetime swept away. As Frost stated in a May 8 letter to President George W. Bush, “With members in more than 2100 communities across the nation, the benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is prepared to answer the call of Americans in distress as we have previously in times of war and disaster.” To aid this relief effort, a fund has been established by the BPO Elks Grand Lodge to assist those individuals and fami-lies who have experienced the devastating effects of the tornado. Checks should be made to Greensburg, Kansas, Emergency Relief Fund and sent to: Greensburg Kansas, Emergency Relief Fund 5441 N. Porter Ave. Wichita, KS 67204-1801 The tornado, which was more than a mile wide and was rated EF-5, the most sever rating in the National Weather Ser-vice’s classification system, reached a wind velocity of 205 mph and within 15 to 20 minutes flattened virtually the entire town —nearly 80 square blocks of homes and businesses set in this quiet wheat and corn farming community. Presi-dent Bush has issued a major disaster declaration for the state. Elks Media Relations

As we plan for the implementation of the new grand Lodge Program, it is necessary for lodges to incorpo-rate the new Americanism Essay Contest into that plan. By distributing the new theme at this time of the year, lodges will have plenty of opportunity to get into area schools early, let teachers know about the pro-gram and solicit their participation in this most worthy program for the fall school term. We ask every exalted ruler and lodge Americanism Committee chairman to follow through with this contest and let students in your community know the significance of our American heri-tage and values.

DOES CORNER

OOPS !!! I really goofed up last month and I truly apologize. Two State Conventions, Does meetings, working (2) jobs, and my feeble mind just let my cut off date slip up on me. Birthdays for May were May 18th Jo Anne Kelley - May 23rd Lib Berfield - May 26th Sylvia Brannon. I wish a happy belated birthday to each of these fine ladies. Does having birthdays in June are: June 6th Louise Harrison - June 15th Laura Taylor - June 22nd Dawn Daniels and June 28th Pat Karlow. I hope each of these ladies live to celebrate 100 birthdays and that I am around to celebrate each of them. I will try to fill you in on some of the things I missed last month and things to take place in the future months. On April 25th we honored Past Presidents. Eight past Presidents were recognized and presented gifts by President Dawn Daniel. We also draped the Charter in memory of Beth Broome. The South Carolina State Convention, that was held in Greenville was a huge success. The Supreme President and her husband were a delightful couple with more personality than any couple I have met. The Spring Banquet was held on May 23rd with an amazing bunch of ladies present. We continue to sell fountain pens as a fund raiser. They have Bible verses on them and are selling for $3.00 each, anyone wishing to purchase one or some should contact Louise Harrison at 864-244-7038. The months of June, July and August we will only have one meeting per month. The Nation Convention will be held in Chandler Arizona in June. Does attending from Greenville are: Nancy Smith, Dawn Daniel, Lynn Smith and Dot Owens. Dawn will be representing Greenville as our delegate and Nancy and Lynn both have appointments from the Supreme President and I am just going along for the ride. We had new shirts ordered for the State Convention and have some of them left. They are aqua in color and have a lighthouse embroidered on the top and a lady bug embroidered on the tail. These emblems were part of the Supremes themes. The shirts are selling for $10.00 and anyone wanting to purchase one should contact Nancy Smith at 864-292-32978. These shirts are part of our fund raisers for this year. Each of you could help our drove by purchasing one or two of these shirts. They are beautiful and have a special meaning to all Does. We continue to send memorials to the Heritage Center and dogs for the deaf in honor of or in memory of Does and their family. Our new budget is a little higher than it has been in past years so any of you that are unable to attend meetings and would like to help us meet our budget, any amount that you would like to donate can be sent to Dot Owens, Secretary, 246 Philippi Church Rd, Union, SC 29379. After all is said and done Char-ity to others is our theme as Does. We continue to collect drink tabs for Ronald McDonald and Campbell’s Soup labels for St. Judes Chil-dren's Ranch, Both are very worthy cause, Please Help. We still have a few ladies that have not paid their 2007 dues. If you are among these ladies please get your Dues to me as soon as possible. We can only accomplish good deeds when each person is commit-ted to what we believe in. We need each one of you. Dot Owens, Reporter
