TROJANS LOOK TO DEFEND NEW TURF Students in the Greenville Area School District and members of the community will soon be able to enjoy the use of the new artificial surface on Greenville High School’s Stewart Field. Construc-tion has recently started to com-pletely replace the grass field with a synthetic surface that will allow the field to be utilized more often by far more people. Beyond en-hancing the Trojan football teams’ home field advantage, the artificial surface will be used by students in physical education classes, pro-vide the marching band with a more appropriate and safer place to practice, assist other athletic teams in their practice needs, provide a facility for community events, and serve as a showcase for our District as we look to serve as a venue for future playoff games. The project, which is under the direction of FieldTurf, has been made possible by the commitment and support of Greenville Area School District’s Board of Education and the contributions of many generous Trojan alumni and friends facilitated under the leader-ship of the District’s Director of Athletic Services/Giving Mr. Bob Stone. While students, coaches, and members of the community anxiously await the completion of the project, the District looks forward to all of those individuals being able to reap the benefits of the

enhanced facility for years to come. Any-one interested in learning more about the project or how they can contribute to its success is asked to visit the District website and click on “Newsletters” under the “Alumni” tab or call Mr. Bob Stone at 724-588-2500, ext. 2179.

STEPHEN HERRICK

Parents’ names: Brian Herrick ’83 and Susan Stainbrook Herrick ‘87 Siblings: Jillian Herrick Class of 2016 and Jase Herrick Class of 2023

What activities have you been involved in during your time as a student at GHS? Varsity Football, Outdoor and Indoor Track, Cross Country, Student Council, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Choir, Varsity G Club, Robotics, Key Club, Academic Games, Fellowship of Christian Athletes What has been your favorite class? Chemistry and AP Chemistry with Mr. Ellis. Chemistry is an interest-ing and challenging subject area that sparks my interests and is fun at the same time. What has been your most memorable experience as a student at GHS? Being taught and coached by my father, Brian Herrick. My experi-ence was vastly improved because he played such a big role throughout my high school career. My life will definitely be different next year without him to guide me, but I am excited and ready to move on to the next phase of my life. What is the best thing about GHS? The best thing about GHS is being able to get involved in as many activities or sports as you want, which isn’t something you can do at a larger school. At GHS you can try everything you are interested in without repercussions and get involved in activities ranging from sports to musicals to foreign languages to the arts. What experience did you have at GHS that provided the most growth for you as a student or person? The sports I played while at GHS played a crucial part in shaping who I am as a person today. They taught me that with hard work, motivation, and a positive attitude you can accomplish almost any-thing. Those lessons will be useful in all of my future endeavors. What are your post-GHS plans? I will attend The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA and will major in Chemical Engineering with a minor or double major in Communications.

It could be any-thing from musicals and plays to choir festivals, Tro-janettes, RYLA, or even getting to do the announcements every morning in the high school office. Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, GASD partnered with Christian Fitness Ministries (CFM) and Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County to provide the Backpack Program to qualifying students at Hempfield Elementary. The Backpack Program provides qualifying elementary students with nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other re-sources are not available. In each food pack is enough food for 4 meals per child, including 100% fruit juice, shelf-stable milk, cereal, fruit cups, protein entrees, and healthy snacks.

During the inaugural year of the program, 75 students at Hempfield Elementary (K-3) participated. Since the school was at 52% enrollment for the Free & Reduced Lunch program during the 2013-2014 school year, Christian Fitness Ministries (CFM), the fundraising leader for the project, had planned for and raised funds for 80 students. CFM believes that the needs of the students at Hempfield are being met. Therefore, for the 2015-2016 school year, they are looking to expand the program to include approximately 60 students at East Elementary (4-6) while continuing to provide the Backpack Pro-gram at Hempfield Elementary. This will bring the program to 140 students. The cost of the program is $225 per student per year. Funds to support the Backpack Program are from individuals, churches, businesses and civic organizations with-in the community. If you’d like to learn more about the Backpack Program for GASD’s Elementary Students, please visit Christian Fitness Ministries’ website at www.cfmini.com.
