Sermon Outline
Text: Genesis 1:1-13, Psalm 19:1-6, John 1:1-14, Revelation 21:3Focus: The findings of science instead of destroying Biblical truth offer more depth to the mystery and majesty of a Creator who designs the world for a purpose. As bearers of the image of God, we are called to use our creativity to repair a broken worldI) A hike down to Natural Rock Bridge and a stroll through Lakeside Is this all an accident or the work of something much more powerful? John Polkinghorne "Modern physics leaves us with a choice: either the universe was created by an Intelligent Designer, or it is a massive and incredible coincidence the likes of which we can hardly imagine."II) Science and Religion: Two lenses to the same universe Science asks “How did life form?” Religion asks “Why did life form?” Trying to compare: A vacuum cleaner with an organ: Both push air for different purposes The Hubble Telescope and Van Gogh’s Starry NightIII) Genesis 1: “God created the heavens and the earth” Out of a “formless void” Tohu wa-bohu, God “creates” Bara Everything (time, weather, food, animals, and people) created for a purpose IV) The central focus of God’s creative energy in Genesis 1 Life is more than a random arrangement of cosmic dust (vs. 1-2) Humans are created in God’s image (vs. 26-27) Humans are to attend to God’s garden (vs. 28) The earth is designed to be God’s dwelling place where God rests (2:3)V) The Challenge and the Hope of Genesis 1 The earth is the place where God dwells and in which God delights (Genesis 1) Even after humans messed up, God did not abandon them (Genesis 3) God became the "Word made flesh" that dwelt among us in Jesus Christ (John 1) God will dwell with us again (Revelation 21) “Creativity is God's gift to us. Using our creativity is our gift back to God.”
