Seven Scouts Make SevenPens In February, AAW member, Michael Roper,Evergreen, Colorado, taught Girl Scouts to turnpens so they could earn their Woodworkingbadges. Most of the Scouts had never usedpower tools and were nervous about their visitto the woodworking space. Michael's daughter,Rose, who has been turning since she wasabout six, and his friend, Josh, were teacherassistants. In just two hours, seven girlssuccessfully crafted seven pens. Michael saysthe most rewarding part of the session wasseeing the Scouts transition from young girlswho were afraid of machinery to confident newturners who were making plans for their nextwoodturning projects.

WMTV15: New GenerationTakes a Turn at an Age-OldCraft For five years, the Badger Woodturners,Madison, Wisconsin, have partnered withWest High School to teach students how toturn wood on a lathe. "This is a piece of atree with bark still on it and I'm going to makea bowl. I think that's really cool," said WestHigh School student, Lily Sandholm. Eachday Badger Woodturning members volunteerup to six hours of their time to work with theschool's four classes. In a six-week programdedicated to woodturning, students learn thebasics of rounding and tapering squarewood. "It's programs like this that really teachkids to think. To problem solve. That's whatwoodturning is all about," said BadgerWoodturner Dave Hiller. Hiller said they're

teaching students to take a vision in theirhead and turn it into a final product. Theschool's woodshop teacher Jim VanFossensaid the class has seen huge success. In2018 more than 300 students signed up forthe woodshop class. The class now has awaiting list to join at the entry level.VanFossen also said he has had twostudents take their education in thewoodturning class and turn it into a career.

Words from a New Turner "I am new to woodturning. I began a few monthsago as a new hobby in my retirement years. Ijust wanted to share with you that joining AAWhas been one of the best decisions that I havemade. The resources that you provide newturners are tremendous. There is so much tolearn and so many skills to master, that havingAAW to help me along the way is greatlyappreciated. Hopefully I can give back as Iprogress in this fine craft of woodturning." ~ EdR., Fort Collins, Colorado

Newton's Law of MotionIn March, Greg Potter, Syracuse, NewYork, a member of the Central New YorkWoodturners, engaged elementary schoolchildren and their parents at the SyracuseLatin School's STEAM* night withexamples of how segmented bowls aremade. Additionally, he explained how mathis needed to calculate the cuts andultimately create a bowl. The kids' favorite

part of the evening was watching Newton'sFirst Law of Motion in action with tops. Thelaw states that an object in motion tends tostay in motion (potential kinetic energy)until acted upon by another force (frictionand gravity). Some of the kids also enjoyedcollecting wood chips. *STEAM is anabbreviation for Science, Technology,Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, aneducation movement that moves awayfrom content areas and emphasizestechnology to connect the subjects.
