Page 22: GREETINGS INTRODUCTIONS AND SMALL TALK › e4e › docfiles › GreetingsIntrosSmallTalk › PP… · Five greetings, introductions, small talk subjects you heard, remember, do not

NARRATOR 1 One spring day, when Mother Bear was little, she found a baby robin in the garden. A baby robin too little to fly.

MOTHER BEAR Oh, how sweet you are. Where did you come from?

LITTLE ROBIN From my nest.

MOTHER BEAR And where is your nest, Little Robin?

LITTLE ROBIN I think it is up there.

NARRATOR 2 No, that was a bluebird’s nest.

LITTLE ROBIN Maybe it is over there.

NARRATOR 1 No, that was an oriole’s nest.

NARRATOR 2 Mother Bear looked all over but could not find a robin’s nest.

1

2

MOTHER BEAR You can live with me. You can be my robin.

NARRATOR 1 She took Little Robin in the house and made a little home for him.

LITTLE ROBIN Please put me by the window. I like to look out at the trees and the sky.

NARRATOR 2 Mother Bear put Little Robin by the window.

LITTLE ROBIN Oh! It must be fun to fly out there.

MOTHER BEAR It will be fun to fly in here, too!

NARRATOR 1 Little Robin ate. He grew. He sang.

NARRATOR 2 Soon, he could fly. He flew around the house. And it was fun, like Mother Bear said it would be.

NARRATOR 1 But then one day, Little Robin was not happy.

Page 24: GREETINGS INTRODUCTIONS AND SMALL TALK › e4e › docfiles › GreetingsIntrosSmallTalk › PP… · Five greetings, introductions, small talk subjects you heard, remember, do not

MOTHER BEAR Why are you so sad, Little Robin?

LITTLE ROBIN I don’t know. My heart is sad.

MOTHER BEAR Sing a song.

LITTLE ROBIN I cannot.

MOTHER BEAR Fly around the house.

LITTLE ROBIN I cannot.

NARRATOR 2 Mother Bear’s eyes filled with tears. She took Little Robin outside and into the garden.

MOTHER BEAR I love you, Little Robin. But I want you to be happy. Fly away, if you wish. You are free!

NARRATOR 1 The robin flew far up into the sky.

4

NARRATOR 2 He sang a high, sweet song.

NARRATOR 1 Then Little Robin came down and sat on Mother Bear’s finger.

LITTLE ROBIN Do not be sad. I love you, too. I must fly out into the world, but I will come back. I will come back every year.

NARRATOR 2 So Mother Bear kissed Little Robin, and he flew away.

LITTLE BEAR And he came back, Grandmother. Didn’t he?

GRANDMOTHER BEAR

Oh, yes, Little Bear! He came back. And his children came back. And his children’s children, too. Here is one now.

LITTLE BEAR Ah! I would have let Little Robin go free, too, Grandmother. Just as Mother Bear did. Hurray! Here is Grandfather.

GRANDMOTHER BEAR

Then it is coffee time.

Page 26: GREETINGS INTRODUCTIONS AND SMALL TALK › e4e › docfiles › GreetingsIntrosSmallTalk › PP… · Five greetings, introductions, small talk subjects you heard, remember, do not

NARRATOR 1 Grandmother Bear went into the house.

NARRATOR 2 Grandfather Bear looked at Little Bear. Little Bear looked at Grandfather Bear. They both laughed.

LITTLE BEAR Tell me a goblin story, Grandfather.

GRANDFATHER BEAR

Yes, if you will hold my paw.

LITTLE BEAR I will not be scared.

GRANDFATHER BEAR

No. But I may be scared.

LITTLE BEAR Oh, Grandfather! Begin the story.

NARRATOR 1 So, Grandfather Bear began his story.
