How Step By Step beganSpring of 1992- After a routine medical checkup, fitness promoter and Toronto native George Marcello was told he had 2 years left to live as a result of a virus infecting his liver.Aug 2, 1995 –George was rushed to the hospital and was told he had 2 days left to live. He received a liver transplant the next day George wanted to passionately acknowledge this gift in the most profound and respectful manner to the family that saved his life. And created a charity called Step By Step. His mission which became revealed; was to address Canada and the world’s organ shortage.

And walk he did by completing 9 high profile campaigns 1997 – He Completed 500 km Toronto Ottawa Walk (14 days) inspired regional media attention1999 He Completed 2,500 km Ontario Walk (96 days) allocated $120 million towards this issue, proved to the world organ transplantation was a cure2000-2002 Completed 12,000 km, 500 cities/towns, Canada 769 Day Walk across Canada – 9 seasons. Pope John Paul 2 blessed his Torch Of Life, millions touched it and received global coverage2004-2005 He brought a 14 year old year old boy who was waiting for liver transplant across 200 cities Kristopher's Wish (365 days). Kris inspired a million kids2005 –2006 He Completed a fact finding European Tour (5 countries). Facing death in France, a miracle got him back to Toronto where he received 2nd liver transplant on 50th birthdayNov 1 2006, after a 2nd liver transplant – He Completed Toronto Ottawa Walk for Suzie an Israeli Mother who needed a liver transplantOct. 2007-June 2008-organized and supervised a 100 student torch relay SOS4000 across Canada. Gained Global AttentionOctober 23, 2009- April 14 2010- Prepared a 36 student country Torch Relay. SOSTheAmericas Covered Alaska to Washington DC, 15 USA States & Canada. Will resume the campaign one dayApril 2011- Shaheem Joya – Young Afghan Canadian carried Torch for Pakistan father, needed liverSept 2011- Brought Reg Green to Toronto Italian festivals to honour his 7 year old son Nicholas Green, who was shot by thugs and died in Italy during vacation. His organs saved many Italian kidsOct/Nov 2011 – Donor Dads- Brought Reg Green & Ismail Khatib, whose 12 year old son was accidently killed by Israeli Soldier, and his organs were donated to Israeli kids. Together Reg & Ismail (Donor Dads) brought Torch to 5 Canadian Cities. Ismail brought his 20 year old son Khaled with himFeb-July 2012- Register Now Ontario – Khaled Khatib brought Torch to 72 cities/towns in Ontario to register organ donors, in memory of MP Harold Albrecht’s wife Betty, and for a 20 year old girl Helene Campbell, who needed a lung transplant. On June 19, 2012, his last day in Toronto, Khaled meets an Israeli 20 year old girl Yael Gladstone, whose brother Yoni Jesner, died in by a suicide bomber in Tel Aviv, and donated his kidney to Palestinian Girl. Together from Toronto City Hall Khaled , Yael, & Helene carried Torch of Life to the finish line at Queens Park. (Remembering what Pope John Paul 2 said spo wisely)Feb 2013-Anthony’s Hero – Khaled walks 500 kilometer in freezing weather from Ottawa to Toronto, with Pneumonia to help his friend Anthony Socci find a kidneyApr 2013-Sept 2014 – Khaled continues with Kayla’s Wish, Fatima’s Hero, Frankie’s Day, Reg Green & Khaled in Vancouver. …..... from Dr. Richard Darling (CEO Fair Foundation) www.fairfoundation.org  I join with many USA Congresspersons, state Governors and my 26-member Board of Directors of transplant surgeons in labeling George Marcello as the most astounding individual promoting life-saving organ donation, not only in the USA, but in the world. In 1997, George began walking back and forth across Canada, more than 12,000 miles and 35 million steps, carrying his “Torch of Life.” In 2001, George met in Rome with Pope John Paul 2nd who blessed the torch and said organ-donation was a genuine act of love. The Pope then urged George to pass the torch to children and walk with them in cities to empower them to carry this message to the world. Eventually thousands of young people proudly carried the Torch, throughout Canada & USA, including 2 very special people, a young man from Palestine and a young lady from Israel. from Lori Abittan (CEO Mulitmedia Nova) His work in the past 14 years have forever left a mark in the history of organ & tissue donations, In 1999, he inspired the Province of Ontario and helped create a 120 million dollar fund for organ & tissue donations and helped improve many laws. Pope John Paul, after blessing the Torch of Life, said let the children carry it. Faithfully George has carried this wish out for the past 10 years, empowering thousands of students throughout Canada & the USA. In 2009/2010 USA Senators, Governors, Transplant surgeons have called George the most remarkable person to advance Organ & Tissue donations in the world. He has the heart of a Terry Fox, and is affectionately called the Italian Terry Fox. He is relentless and does not understand the words Give Up and often risks his life. He cares so much about the underdog, he is often found fighting for them. He works with everyone & believes in bringing all cultural and religions together to confront the major issues of the day and inspire people through love and understanding. He believes if more people became organ & tissue donors, the world would be that much closer. His recent work in the Middle East is providing hope in that troubled area.
