The Prime Minister has appointed Greg Hands, Member of Parliament for Chelsea and Fulham, as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in the first Cabinet reshuffle following the General Election. Greg Hands will take up the second most senior position in the Treasury, after the Chancellor, George Osborne, The Chief Secretary is responsible for public expenditure including spending reviews and strategic planning, welfare reform, and efficiency and value for money in public service. Greg is the first MP for Fulham at the Cabinet table since Labour’s Michael Stewart in 1970, and the first MP for Chelsea since the Conservatives’ Sir Samuel Hoare in 1940. In his new role Greg will attend meetings of Cabinet as part of the David Cameron’s majority Government. Commenting on Twitter following his appointment, Greg said: “It is a great honour that David Cameron has appointed me Chief Secretary to the Treasury. I am already hard at work delivering the Long Term Economic Plan.” Greg later added: “I am delighted to be part of the Treasury Team, charged with building a more secure future for Britain, which is now possible under this new Conservative majority Government. “At the end of last the Labour Government, the country was borrowing over £150 billion a year and unemployment had increased by nearly half a million. Britain had suffered the deepest recession since the War, and had the second biggest structural deficit of any advanced economy. “Over the last five years, we have had to make realistic assessments about the state of the British economy and this involved taking difficult decisions to reduce the deficit and control spending. Thanks to the hard work of the British people, this long-term economic plan is working. The deficit is down by half, there are over 2 million more private sector jobs, and there are 760,000 more businesses. “But the job isn’t done: there is more to do. We intend to run a budget surplus so that we start paying down our debts and keep our economy secure, reduce spending and cut out waste, instead of increasing taxes on working people. We will control the welfare budget so we save money and reward work by taking everyone earning less than £12,500 out of Income Tax altogether and pass a law to ensure we have a Tax-Free Minimum Wage in this country.” The other Treasury ministers appointed in the reshuffle are David Gauke MP, Financial Secretary; Damian Hinds MP, Exchequer Secretary; Harriett Baldwin MP, Economic Secretary and City Minister; and economist Jim O’Neil who will serve as Commercial Secretary. The famous drawer of the Chief Secretary’s desk in the Treasury, where Labour’s Liam Byrne left his famous “There’s no money left” note in 2010. Danny Alexander, sensibly, left no similar note for his successor, Greg Hands. Greg was this week appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and will attend Cabinet. David Cameron’s Conservatives win election to form majority Government At the General Election last week, the Conservatives won 331 seats to Labour’s 232. Prime Minister David Cameron will now hold a theoretical majority of 12 in the House of Commons, allowing his Government to pursue its agenda of building a more secure future for Britain. The Conservatives’ overall victory in the election came as somewhat of a surprise to many in the country after most opinion polls had predicted a hung parliament. In this historic victory the Conservatives won 28 more seats than in 2010, which is the first time an incumbent governing party has increased its seats since 1983 when Margaret Thatcher won a second term following the Falklands conflict. Newly re-elected MP for Chelsea and Fulham, Greg Hands, said: “The Conservatives’ conclusive victory at this election is a clear vote of public confidence in our long term economic plan that we have been implementing for the last five years and will now continue with for the next Parliament. We now have a clear mandate to implement our manifesto pledges which will work towards building a more secure future for Britain. “The people have spoken and they have clearly chosen a strong future for Britain, with the firm and decisive leadership of David Cameron, and rejected the package of instability, higher taxes and higher debt that Labour were offering. “We now have a duty to repay the trust that Britain has placed in us, and to get to work on our plans to reduce the deficit, build the economy, create prosperity, and continue to improve education in our country so that families can enjoy a better future.” The Conservatives fought the election campaign on six key manifesto themes: 1. Britain living within its means 2. Building a Britain with full employment 3. Building a Britain that rewards work 4. Building a Britain that gives every child the best start in life 5. Building a Britain that offers everyone security in retirement 6. Building a Britain where everyone who works hard can have a home of their own Later this month will see the State Opening of Parliament, on Wednesday 27 th May, in which the Queen’s Speech will outline more details of how these ambitions will form part of the Government’s legislative programme for the next year. The Conservatives are putting working people front and centre of the new Government’s mission. The Prime Minister will announce new legislation that will be introduced within weeks to reform welfare, offer more apprenticeships, create two million jobs and help with childcare costs. This is a ‘One Nation’ Government that will act in the interests of the whole country and be on the side of all hard-working people as Britain heads to a better, more secure future. Greg Hands welcomes 2,900 local businesses benefiting from tax cut Conservative Candidate, Greg Hands, has welcomed new figures released by HMRC which show that 2,900 businesses in Chelsea and Fulham have benefited from the Government’s Employment Allowance since its introduction a year ago, making it easier for small businesses to hire staff and create new jobs. Official statistics released by HMRC (30 April 2015), showed the Employment Allowance take-up estimates for the full year 2014-15. The Conservative led coalition Government introduced the Employment Allowance in April 2014 as a tax cut to support jobs. It provides up to £2,000 off the National Insurance bill for every employer, and is open to businesses, charities, and community amateur sports clubs. The allowance means a business could now hire someone on £22,400 a year, or three people working full-time on the minimum wage, and not have to pay any employer National Insurance Contributions. This is making it easier for local businesses to grow and create more jobs. Since it was launched in April 2014, over 1.1 million employers across the country have benefited from the Employment Allowance. Additionally, employment is up by 2 million since May 2010, under a Conservative Government. In the three months to April 2010, there were 29.048 million people in employment. In the three months to February 2015 there were 31.049 million people in work. Greg Hands, Conservative MP for Chelsea and Fulham, commented on the new statistics: “The Conservatives economic plan is backing businesses to create jobs, which is why it is so important that we stick to that plan so we can provide more people with the economic security that a regular wage brings. Since we introduced the Employment Allowance a year ago 188,000 businesses in London, and 2,900 right here in Chelsea and Fulham have had their National Insurance tax cut, making it easier for them to hire staff and create new jobs.” Chancellor George Osborne welcomed the figures, saying: “It is great news that 1.1 million small businesses are now claiming our Employment Allowance. This confirms that our Employment Allowance has been a huge success - and a real boost to job-creating small businesses. Backing small business is at the heart of our long- term economic plan, a plan that is delivering jobs and growth across the country. Britain has now created over 2 million jobs in the past five years, and our £2,000 cashback on jobs has made it easier for small businesses to take on new staff.” Constituency Look Ahead – 15 th May Upcoming Events in the Fulham part of the Constituency (for a full list of local events, check out local website ‘Those Who Noes Fulham’ - www.thosewhonosefulham.com ) FULHAM FC HOME GAME Saturday, May 23, 2015 13:00 Craven Cottage, Stephenage Road, London SW6 6HH Fulham All Stars v Celebrity All Stars Friendly match kicks off at 1pm Visit website >> CHELSEA FC HOME GAME Sunday, May 24, 2015 15:30 Chelsea FC, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London SW6 1HS Chelsea v Sunderland Kick off at 3 pm Please visit Chelsea FC website for further information about the match and tickets Visit website >> 7 ways to contact Greg Hands: By Phone: 020 7219 5448 By email: [email protected] By post: Greg Hands House of Commons London SW1A 0AA In person: Click here for details of how to book an appointment at Greg Hands’s weekly surgery www.greghands.com More news from Greg Hands MP, coming soonPlease forward this email on to anyone you think may be interested.
