GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3 August 2016 GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL SKILLS FOR LIFE! Dear Parents/Caregivers HANGI Our end of term Hangi was a great night. Thank you so much for your support. Special thanks to Duane Howie and Kereama for putting the hangi down and Paul Evans for digging the holes. Grateful thanks also to Maria Pender for the brazier and gazebo. Maria arrived at lunchtime and cooked up saveloys and sausages for the children on the brazier. Thanks Maria, the children had a lot of fun and your efforts made the day just that little bit more special. What a wonderful community we have. We have lots of pots and containers left at school after the Hangi. Please check in Room 4 and see if there is anything of yours in there. PRODUCTION Victoria King is working with the students on our school production of ‘Hoodwinked’ a version of the Robin Hood story. The students have all been given their lines and songs to memorise. The show promises to be great fun. Please encourage your children to learn their lines and sing their songs at home. Production night is Thursday 22 September. CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOUR Here is the fourth part of an article that I shared with you in the last three newsletters. As a reminder it comes in response to a teacher’s statement about the behaviour of children in schools. We found it interesting and have to agree that maybe we need to seriously look at how our lifestyle choices are affecting our children, please draw your own conclusions. Open Quote 4. Endless Fun We have created an artificial fun world for our children. There are no dull moments. The moment it becomes quiet, we run to entertain them again because otherwise we feel that we are not doing our parenting duty. We live in two separate worlds. They have their “fun” world and we have our “work” world. Why aren’t children helping us in the kitchen or with laundry? Why don’t they tidy up their toys? This is basic monotonous work that trains the brain to be workable and function under “boredom” which is the same “muscle” that is required to be eventually teachable at school. When they come to school and it is time for printing, their answer is “I can’t. It is too hard. Too boring” Why? GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL SKILLS FOR LIFE!

Dear Parents/Caregivers

HANGIOur end of term Hangi was a great night.

CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOURHere is the fourth part of an article that I shared with you in the last three newsletters. As a reminder it comes in response to a teacher’s statement about the behaviour of children in schools. We found it interesting and have to agree that maybe we need to seriously look at how our lifestyle choices are affecting our children, please draw your own conclusions.Open Quote

4. Endless FunWe have created an artificial fun world for our children. There are no dull moments. The moment it becomes quiet, we run to entertain them again because otherwise we feel that we

are not doing our parenting duty. Because the workable “muscle” is not getting trained through endless fun. It gets trained through work.(Close quote)

So what do we do about this? If you’re really interested in some answers to these questions we’d like to run an evening this term based on what we’ve been doing in ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning’. We may have some answers for you as we discuss what we’re endeavouring to achieve here at school. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning evening will be held on Wednesday 14th September. Come along and listen to Kelly Watson, our Resource Teacher for Learning and Behaviour who will outline what we are putting into place in our school. We’ll make it a twilight meeting beginning at 6.00pm with a movie and BBQ for the children, sandwiches and savouries for the adults. This will be a most informative and interesting session. Please mark it in your calendar!

STUDENT COUNCILAndra has been voted on as Room 1’s representative for Term 3. Congratulations Andra.

THE PRESS NEWSPAPERRoom 1 would be most grateful if there is anyone who could give us “The Press” when you have finished with it. We require it for the duration of the Olympic games to assist us with our studies.Thank youSue McMillan

new club in our region? Hockey is growing rapidly in popularity in the Hurunui district. A significant number of adults and children from Amberley and beyond travel to Rangiora or Christchurch each weekend to play. There is now a move to establish a club for our area, and we are seeking people to be part of an establishment committee.

Recent developments in our area include the Dudley Park mini turf (completed last year) the construction of a full size turf in Rangiora (due for completion in November this year) a half turf at Amuri Area School (underway) and the possibility of a full sized turf at Amuri Area School in the long term. As you can see, the growth our way is significant. If you are interested in seeing hockey grow in the Hurunui region, and would like to be part of an establishment committee, please contact either:Lou Mones-Cazon                  [email protected] Green                            [email protected] if you don't want to be part of a committee, but believe that you or your children may be interested in being part of a Hurunui Hockey club, get in touch and let us know.

- Make your GP team your first call 24/7 - After-hours (when the practice is closed) a team

of nurses is available to give free health advice. If you need to be seen urgently, they can tell you what to do and where to go.

- It’s easy – phone your usual General Practice number 24/7

- Put your family doctor’s phone number in your contacts in your phone – then you’ll have it at the ready whenever you need it – any time of day ornight.

When a child is unwell it's always good to seek medical attention sooner, rather than later. It’s best to phone your own general practice team any time of the day or night. If a child does need to have an appointment, most practices in Canterbury have free consultations for those under 13.
