GRETA VALLEY SCHOOL A dynamic rural School empowering students

with skills to be future focussed culturally aware and creative thinkers.

We build SKILLS for SUCCESS!

Dear Parents/Caregivers

TRIATHLONCongratulations to; Flynn who came 1st in the Year1/2 cross country race yesterday, to Sam, Logan and Elsie who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Year 3 and 4 race and Zach who came first in the senior Year 5-8 race. Our grateful thanks to the Omihi School Juniors and the Waikari School seniors who introduced some great competition into our races. We are also grateful for staff from all the schools who assisted on the course and parents for spectating, cheering and transporting students to and from the venue.

FIRST AIDThe St John’s First Aid lady was excellent and taught all our students about how to respond in an emergency. The seniors had a lot of fun learning the basics of how to roll a person onto their side, bandage deep wounds and put a sling on a person’s arm. The juniors learned how to keep themselves safe in an emergency situation how to call an emergency service and respond on the phone. They learned that they need to know their home phone number, their address and the nearest town when responding on the phone.

FIELDS OF REMEMBERANCEIt was an honour for us to participate in the ‘Fields of Remembrance’ Day in Amberley and our children learned a lot about having respect for others in this situation. It was a good experience for them especially when we evaluated our performance at the service afterwards. They learned what it meant to show reverence and gratitude through behaviour in a given situation.

CPIT VISITOur seniors enjoyed their careers education day last week at CPIT. The programme was stem science research, at a basic level for our students and outdoor education careers.

WANTEDWe would like to ask for the following items that you may have around the house or in the ‘no longer used stuff’ in a cupboard. If you have any Lego, Duplo, Meccano, wooden blocks, wood offcuts, small cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, clean plastic containers including ice-cream, yoghurt containers, plastic lids or pretty much anything we could use in art and construction work we would love to have it. If you have something that could be dismantled using tools we would love to get our hands on it. We plan to reintroduce a woodwork bench and if anyone has a bench standing idle please give us a call.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCESToday we have Student Led Conferences and thank you for making the time to meet and review your child’s work, meet with the teacher and discuss future goals and direction for your children. If you have been unable to make a time to meet with us because of work commitments please make a time that would better suit your needs. It is a proven fact that when school, parents and students work together better outcomes are achieved in learning.

CHILD CANCER FUNDRAISER

Thank you to those families who sent along a donation for the Fire Brigade fund raiser. We managed to raise $40.00 for the Child Cancer Foundation.

SCHOOL CAMPPlease note that we have postponed our school camp in order to do some fund raising. We believe the students need to contribute towards this activity so that they can gain a better appreciation of what it takes to pay for these activities. This helps to meet the key competency of participating and contributing in school and in the wider community. Jo will send out some information on a fund raiser that the students can participate in.

PARENTS EVENINGOur parents evening is coming up on Tuesday 19th of May, and we ask that you come along between 6 and 7.30pm that evening to help us work out the direction for our school in the coming years. We need to be meeting the needs of learners and our school needs to be future focussed in its direction. We would love to have your input and seek to know what we are doing well as a school, what we could do better, as well as what you would like to see your child doing over the next three years. We are planning the strategic direction for our school and need you to help us work this out. We will provide supervision for our families’ children, a movie, sausage and bread and popcorn for the children to snack on while they watch the movie. Sandwiches and savouries will be provided for the adults in our meeting. We’d love to see you there!

TEACHER ONLY DAYA reminder to that Friday 22nd May is a teacher only day and school will be closed for instruction.

REMINDERWe would also like to remind you that children are expected at school no sooner than 8.30am in the morning. This allows teachers time to prepare for the day without student responsibility, distraction or interruption. If you have occasion to send them earlier please inform us. SECOND HAND UNIFORMWe have a selection of size 10 and 12 second hand items of uniform available (tops, fleeces and track pants). Contact the school office if you are interested.

SCHOOL POOL KEY

Could all pool keys please be returned to the school office.

JOKE OF THE WEEKA teacher asked her students to use the word "beans" in a sentence. "My father grows beans," said one girl. "My mother cooks beans," said a boy. A third student spoke up, "We are all human beans."

QUOTE OF THE WEEKDon’t go around saying the world owes you a living; the world owes you nothing; it was here first.

**FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL**FOTS RUGBY FUNDRAISER I've heard of a few people who are a bit unsure about our Glenmark Rugby Afternoon Teas, so thought I'd just give everyone a quick rundown of what it's about. We provide smoko for the Glenmark Div 1, Div 2, and Colts when they play home games at Omihi. (Sometimes only one team, sometimes all 3) It's pretty basic, we make sandwiches, heat up pizzas and savouries, and cook saveloys - then put everything out in the dining room and clean up afterwards. FOTS provides the bulk of the food, and whoever is on duty provides a sandwich filling like eggs, cheese and pineapple, tinned salmon with mayo etc.  This is quite a significant fundraiser for FOTS!  If you have any questions, just give me a call on 033143801. Cheers, Jo Gardner. **COMMUNITY NOTICES **CHIMNEY SWEEPWe  are a mobile chimney service working in the area over the next few weeks. We are very affordable and can repair most on the spot. Rates are $40 single story sweep, $55 coal range, $75 open fire and two story. Call Russ aka Sooty 02102862107/0275858834.
