Notes

The composition of the Greater London Council is 92 councillors and 15aldermen. The date of the 1973 election was fixed by the Council undersection 2 of the London Government Act 1967. Subsequent electionswill be held on the day fixed by section 43 of the Local Government Act1972 which shall be the first Thursday in May unless some other day isfixed by the Home Secretary.

For the 1973 and subsequent elections the representation is one councillorfor each of the single-member electoral divisions corresponding withparliamentary constituencies. The Council is required to arrange by-electionswhenever vacancies are notified, subject to the provisions of section 89 ofthe Local Government Act 1972. Since 1964 elections have been held everythird year but the Local Government Act 1972 empowers the Home Secretary to make an Order providing for elections at four-yearly intervals.

Aldermen are elected by the councillors from among councillors or personsqualified to be councillors.

At the time of going to print, the seat for Croydon North East was subjectto High Court action to have the election declared invalid.
