Grid Drawings

The purpose is- To copy accurately.- To enlarge accurately.- Chuck Close is an excellent exampleof an artist that uses thistechnique.

• Originally known as a photorealist

• Large scale portraits (often family, friends other artists or himself)

Close puts a grid on the photo and on the canvas and copies the photo

square by square.

Close at times turned away

from the hyper realism

•Still used a grid but each square often had multiple colors and patterns.

•When seen from afar the squares come together to create the portrait

• Had a medical ‘event’ in 1988 that left him paralyzed

•continued to paint with a brush held between his teeth, or strapped to his arm•using a grid created by an assistant.
