Grid FP6 Preparatory activities 2003
• Workshop held on 29-30 January focusing on constituency building
• Launch of ‘expert group’ to identify research priorities towards thenext generation Grid (April)
• Establish inventory of on-going Grid research in Europe andbeyond
• Position future European IST Grid and Infrastructure actions withrespect to the US Cyberinfrastructure Initiative (proposed funding1020 M$/year)
• Workshop: Grid-based enabling application technologies (28-29April)
• Workshop: Grid platforms for e-enterprise applications (planned)
• Concertation Meeting of FP5 Grid projects (18-19 June)

Recommendations Grid Workshop Jan 2003
• Make inventory of present Grid research– Technology re-use should be assured– Learn from 1st generation projects / Inventory by ‘GridStart’ Project
• Set up a small group of visionary experts to– Identify research priorities for the next 5-7 years and propose
pragmatic steps to be taken;– Propose a roadmap for the implementation of these steps (in view of
upcoming calls for proposals);– Align technology priorities and means of implementation with policy
objectives, e.g. ERA, European Centres of Excellence, etc.– Network/liaise and discuss findings with the Grid research community;– Propose actions to increase efficiency in international collaboration.

European research policy context
• European Research Area (Lisbon Summit, March 2000)
IST-FP6 to boost the emergence of ERA!Grids: a main strategic objective!
• R&D investments from 1.9% up to 3% of GDP by2010 (Barcelona Council, March 2002)

ERA: a new context for EU supported RTD
• Moving towards a European level Research policy– Strengthen co-operation between National and EU Activities– Improve links between National and EU policies and schemes– Development of a “shared vision” on European RTD– Potential for co-funding arrangements
• FP6 is a major instrument to realise ERA• Realising ERA will require
– New thinking: more strategic and goal oriented– New approach: concentration, critical mass and flexibility– New scope: taking account of the international dimension of RTD
(greater awareness of who’s doing what)– New instruments: Integrated Projects (IPs) & Networks of Excellence (NoEs)
FP6 is not business a
s usual!

20 March 2003 Wolfgang Boch DG Information Society/Unit F2
FP6 is not business as usual!
• From “Project”-thinking to “Initiative”-thinking– New instruments: “Integrated Projects” &
“Networks of Excellence”– More strategic thinking
• Develop Europe-wide approaches– Making sure that Community funding helps
aggregate EU, Member State & private fundedeffort(s)
– It is not just supporting a particular RTD work…

ERA: the co-ordination dimension
• Objectives: Support the member states in developingcommon visions/activities and co-ordinating their effort
– Using if needed, the FP6 instruments
• Approach– Two main layers:
1- Exchange of information: between the MSs and ACCs2- Help develop common initiatives
Complements the ISTAG work.
– To be organised at programme level and at domain levelØUsing Co-ordination Actions to prepare/initiate co-ordination

Conclusions
• Grid technologies will revolutionise the Internet of tomorrow asthe Web did for the Internet of today
• Grid research represents a key priority in IST-FP6 and willserve as a means for the evolution of ERA
• Need for stronger co-ordination of existing Community,Member States and international Grid research initiatives, e.g.through a “Virtual Grid Middleware Laboratory”
• The shift of Grids from e-Science to industry will in future reapthe benefits for European business, industry and society
