My Intro

Mary Cassatt was born on May 22, 1844. Mary Cassatt’s parents did not like the idea of of her being an artist, although they did help her by paying for her art classes for many years. When Mary Cassatt was 15 she stopped going to her regular school. Mary Cassatt wanted to study art. The next year she was trying to convince her parents to let her take a drawing class at The Pennsalvania Academy of th Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Mary Cassatt was one of the first women to enroll. Her and her friend took classes together and they learned about the different styles of different artists.

Mary Cassatt was determined to be a great artist because she did not like how momen were treated.

Boating Party

Here, the woman appears enthroned in the prow of the boat, the child’s sun hat encircles its head like a halo, and the man bows before them like a supplicant. In referring to this traditional image, Cassatt invests an everyday scene of contemporary life with a sense of reverence — perhaps to express her view of women as powerful forces of creativity.

Cassatt's Little Girl in a Blue Armchair, prominently focuses on the little girl, lit in the foreground as she sprawls with a carefree attitude on the sofa.  Her little dog, a prized posession of French women, accompanies her.
