Life in Queensland

With world heritage-listed tropical rainforest in the north, huge cattle farms in the west, and the largest coral reef on the planet — The Great Barrier Reef — in the north east, Queensland is one of Australia’s most diverse states. Griffith’s five university campuses are located in Queensland’s capital city, Brisbane, the second largest city, the Gold Coast, and the vibrant multicultural city of Logan. GELI is situated on Griffith’s three largest campuses.

Set amongst native bushland and located just minutes from pristine beaches, Griffith’s Gold Coast campus is to many a home-away-from-home. Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) student Juan, from Colombia, shares his experience studying on the Gold Coast and the reasons he chose to study at GELI.

Off-campusIn Australia, share housing—where you share a house or apartment with a number of other students—is the most common form of off-campus accommodation. To ensure you can inspect the property before you move in, it is better to organise off-campus accommodation once you arrive. However, we suggest you organise temporary accommodation for your first few weeks in Queensland from your home country. Find off-campus accommodation properties here: griffith.edu.au/off-campus-accommodation/search-for-accommodation

HomestayHomestay accommodation gives you the option to live with an Australian family while you study. Homestays are available to students at all Griffith campuses. Academic pathway adviceAcademic pathway advice is available to all GELI students. Specialised staff can meet with you privately to discuss your progression to higher level English language programs or to university.

Academic workshops Academic workshops are free of charge and help you improve your English skills after class.

I started my studies at GELI as a General English student with very limited English skills. Throughout the year, I progressed from General English (GE) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to the Direct Entry Program (DEP Prep and DEP) to Griffith University.

I am now studying my masters degree and, looking back to my year at GELI, I see that I did not only improve my English skills dramatically but also learnt to think critically and become an independent learner, skills that have been very useful in university.

While studying at GELI I always made sure I challenged myself and embraced my learning experience. I was named the winner of GELI’s Excellence Award, and rewarded with $1,000 for my dedication in my studies; it felt great to know that my effort had been noticed.

Studying at GELI has been a great experience for me. The professional level of the teachers is exceptional and the Institute’s facilities and support for first time international students is just outstanding. The opportunity to study in such a multicultural environment and meet so many people from all around the world has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and something I will never forget.

Watban Jameel Mansoor Abdulazeez, Iraq GELI GE, EAP, DEP Prep and DEP past student

GELI Excellence Award The GELI Excellence Award is given out ten times a year. It is designed to reward outstanding GELI students who progress well in their studies and embrace the GELI experience. Winners receive $1,000 cash and all GELI students are able to apply. Find out more at griffith.edu.au/geli-excellence-award

Independent Learning Centre (ILC) At GELI’s ILCs we help you to develop your skills outside class using the learning method that suits you best.

Our students’ stories

GELI students represent 48 nationalities. They bring invaluable international perspectives and experiences to our classrooms and community. At GELI we ensure each student feels welcome and supported, both to learn English and in their new lives in Australia. But don’t just take our word for it - these are some of their stories.

When I came across the opportunity to study my Masters degree in Australia I knew it would be a lifetime experience, and I was right! By studying the EAP course at GELI, I did not only improve my English skills but also learnt so much about academic English, which has given me a great advantage in my studies.

Rocio Oliva Lobo, Spain

I had never lived abroad and when I arrived at GELI I was glad to see how helpful and friendly everyone was. By studying at such a multicultural place I have been able to improve my English really fast and get closer to my professional goals.

Diego Fernando Veloz Cherrez, Ecuador

Learning English in an English speaking country has been the best decision of my life. GELI teachers use great teaching methodologies to fit diverse student learning styles. They are not only great academics, but are also great people that want to see you succeed.

Simona Francisca Camilla Penaloza, Chile

DEP exposes you to a real academic learning environment. It introduced me to academic research and taught me how to use resources effectively. This knowledge will not only help me in my studies but will stay with me for life.

Juma Martin Phanuel William, South Sudan (see page 19)

DEP Prep was a great introductory course to DEP. It taught me how to gather information and reference it correctly. I didn’t know this before and I think if I hadn’t done this course, I could get myself into trouble at university!

Seyedeh Zeinab Mohammadi, Iran

To have the opportunity to study at an institute that is part of one of the Top 400 universities in the world at a fair price was a great advantage. I have not only improved my English but I have learned to ‘think’ in English.

Bernabe Zaragoza Solis, Mexico

10 Griffith English Language Institute Prospectus 2016

Page 13: Griffith English Language Institute Prospectus › IcerikResimleri › file › ...Brisbane Brisbane’s brilliant weather, lush riverfront parklands, unique architecture and vibrant

I moved here with my husband to better my qualifications and career opportunities. We have felt very welcomed and happy to be here. GELI’s great independent learning system and the extracurricular activities have helped me make new friends and enjoy my experience living in Australia.

Niru Thapa, Nepal

Being able to speak in English fluently will help me open more opportunities in my journalism career. GELI teachers are very supportive and their teaching style is second to none. Also, the activities offered after class have helped me improve my oral skills and make new friends.

Nam Kyoung Lee (Ann), Korea

The teachers are not only the best at teaching English, but they’re also really good at providing useful study techniques that I will be able to use in my future studies. Without learning at GELI I would have found it really difficult to adapt to the Australian university style.

Satoshi Horiuchi, Japan

Studying at GELI has been a very unique experience for me. Teachers are very professional and experts at teaching effective learning techniques, which have help me not only improve my English very fast but also my academic skills.

Lovejeet Aujla, India

Since studying at GELI I feel that my communication skills have improved immensely thanks to the great multicultural environment – the only common language is English so everyone needs to speak in English!

Tawewat Kangwanrat (Art), Thailand

Not only did GELI help me learn English they also gave me helpful advice I needed to start my new life in Australia. Thanks to my year studying English at GELI from GE through to EAP, I am now studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Griffith University.

Natalia Svetlova, Russia

At GELI we learn in a professional and highly competitive environment, where you are encouraged to improve your abilities and study hard. Studying at GELI not only improves your English skills but also sets a good foundation for university studies in essential areas such as critical thinking and time management

Hoang Minh Do, Vietnam

I am studying the ETP course where I am improving in all four English areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, to later take my IELTS test. Thanks to this course I will be able to enter university and study my Master of Screen Production.

Lepeng Ran, China

GELI CoursesOur English language courses range from beginner to advanced levels. Class sizes at GELI are small with a maximum of 18 students per class, which means you receive personal attention from your teachers and progress quickly through your English language studies.

You receive 20 hours of face-to-face teaching per week, and will be placed in a morning (8:15 am – 12:45 pm), or afternoon (1 pm – 5:30 pm), class session. As well as your class time you are expected to complete at least five hours of independent learning each week at the ILC.

As a guide, it takes a minimum of ten weeks to move up half an International English Language Test System (IELTS) band (the most commonly used English test, see page 14). That means if you start at GELI with an IELTS level of 4.5 it will take you a minimum of 50 weeks (just under a year) to obtain an IELTS of 7.0 (the highest IELTS score needed for entry into Griffith University programs).

If you have not sat an English language proficiency test before you arrive at GELI (see page 14 for a list of some of the most popular English tests), you will sit the GELI placement test to determine your English proficiency level.

I arrived in Australia as a Griffith Study Abroad student, which has turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. In order to fully succeed in my studies I decided I needed to improve on my academic English skills. By studying at GELI, I was able to learn vital skills specific for University such as academic writing, referencing, research and more.

I really liked that, as well as learning English at GELI, I was also able to have fun and discover Australia through the Activities program.

After finishing my English studies I progressed to Griffith University where I’m expanding on my Digital Media skills. I am now on my last semester of my Study Abroad program, and I am about to start a full-time work internship at Griffith International’s marketing office. I am very excited I will be able to apply my knowledge to a real life experience.

Kento Okuoka, Japan Former GELI and Griffith University student Currently on an internship with Griffith International’s marketing office

Pathway:

I was awarded the “Australian Awards Scholarship” to pursue my Master of Science in Public Health in Australia, and given the freedom to choose the University of my choice. I chose Griffith University for its renowned world-class education, beautiful location and the campus facilities available to students.

Even though I completed my higher education in English, I knew I needed to improve in various skills and I could only do that by studying at an English-only environment.

By studying at GELI I have been able to improve my English and academic skills significantly.

GELI’s Direct Entry Program (DEP) course exposes you to a real academic learning environment; it has introduced me to academic research and has taught me how to use resources effectively. This knowledge will not only help me in my studies but will stay with me for life.

Back in my home country, South Sudan, I was working in a Red Cross humanitarian organization. I now hope that after I finish my studies I can help educate people in my country and improve their health status.

Juma Martin Phanuel William, South Sudan Former GELI student and future Griffith University postgraduate student

Pathway: EAP DEP PREP DEP

Before moving to Australia I was an accounting professional in my home country, Venezuela. In order to achieve my future professional goals I decided to pursue a Masters degree at Griffith University, and to do so I needed to learn English.

I started my studies in General English (GE) with very basic English skills. After studying for nine months, from GE through to the DEP program, I now feel that my English skills have improved a lot.

I am very confident about my abilities and I’m sure that I will be able to succeed in my future studies.

During my time studying at GELI I was awarded the “GELI Excellence Award” for my academic progress and my continuous participation and involvement in and outside class. I was rewarded with a great cash prize, a surprise that helped encourage me to keep studying hard and get better every day.

Learning English and studying in a different country has been an amazing experience that will stay with me forever.

High School Preparation (HSP)High School Preparation (HSP) program is designed for

international students, aged 14 to 18 years old, who wish

to start or continue their studies in an Australian high

school. The program aims to improve students’ English

language level and subject-specific content knowledge

by integrating language studies with main school subject

areas, academic skills and cultural information. To find out

more about our High School Preparation program, ask your

registered country agent for the program brochure or visit

the website below.

Group teaching programsGriffith’s International Business Development Unit (IBDU) and GELI tailor make English language programs for high school, university, government or private sector groups. The courses are informed by Griffith’s strongest academic areas including tourism and hotel management, public health, environment and business. Programs can include site visits, lectures, workshops, volunteering and cultural attractions. The courses focus on:

• English language• academic and professional development• cultural awareness

GELI also provides the following group teaching programs:

• Teacher training Designed for experienced teachers and university lecturers, our professional programs help you develop TESOL teaching methodologies and improve your English language skills to assist you in the classroom, and multiply your career opportunities.

• Corporate training Our English language Corporate Training courses are customised sessions for business professionals. They have been designed to help you learn English language communication skills in your specific field (for example: nursing, teaching or business).

• Study tours Travel with a group around Queensland and practise your English while experiencing the unique attractions of one of Australia’s most environmentally diverse and naturally beautiful states.

At GELI I’ve learnt new teaching

techniques such as kinesthetic intelligence,

an integrated teaching style that introduces movement

to other customary skills such as listening, speaking and reading. Here teachers

have an ‘active learning’ teaching style, which

encourages teacher-student communication, something

I’m looking forward to implementing in my class.
