1 Griffith Honours College | 2012 Annual Report
1 What is the Griffith Honours College? In 2007 Griffith University established the Griffith Honours College (GHC) to:-
attract high achieving students to study at Griffith University;
assist the success of high achieving students through the provision of support and additional benefits; and
promote the University to the public, secondary schools and potential students as an institution that is committed to academic excellence.
Students are invited to participate in enriching experiences
in conjunction with their undergraduate studies. GHC is
designed to provide talented students with skills and
qualities in high demand by employers – leadership,
teamwork, a global perspective, communication, and
research skills. There are no membership fees for students
and the majority of activities are sponsored.
The Griffith Honours College experience has been created
to allow students to reach their full potential and to
differentiate them from their peers upon graduation. The
aim of GHC is to offer activities that not only quickly and
continuously engage members in their undergraduate
studies but also develop and maintain their sense of
belonging to the University community. In 2008, the GHC
opened its doors to 132 direct entry students. By 2012, the
number of GHC members has risen to almost 600. As well
as achieving high OP Scores and Grade Point Averages, the
students must demonstrate leadership and civic roles in
their school, university or communities. Whilst it is
anticipated that many GHC students will continue onto
postgraduate or research higher degree studies, the GHC is
not directly associated with the University’s undergraduate
honours degree programs. GHC encourages students to
engage in lifelong learning. At Orientation 76% of students
indicated that they intend to enrol in Honours and
Postgraduate programs after completion of their
undergraduate degree studies. 2012 was Griffith’s premier
year in regards to success with prestigious internships and
scholarships. In line with the University’s focus on Asia,
Griffith students were awarded five Prime Minister Asia
Pacific Awards from five nominations.
The GHC has four staff and forms part of the Pro Vice Chancellor (Administration) portfolio.

3 Why did Griffith University introduce the Griffith Honours College? ‘An increasingly competitive higher education environment has made it necessary for Griffith University to find ways to more effectively use limited resources to maximise outcomes for both individual students and the institution as a whole’ (Student Retention Project, 2003, p.5). GHC is part of a three tiered approach to attract and retain high achieving students through an enriched university experience:-
1. Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarships 2. Connect Partner Schools Program 3. Griffith Honours College
Throughout its years of operation, data on students’ perceptions about university study and the influence that their involvement with GHC has had on their sense of belonging to the University community has been sourced. Analysis of the data is undertaken to identify what this cohort of high achieving students are seeking from their university study and what influences them to voluntarily take on an additional workload for no credit point towards an undergraduate program. Students reported that they appreciate the opportunity to increase their employability through mentoring by an academic in their discipline, gaining a global perspective and increasing their skills through community engagement. Early experiences with tertiary education are pivotal in establishing values, attitudes, and approaches to learning that will last throughout students’ tertiary experiences, and beyond (McInnis & James, 1995). The processes by which students come to identify with and become members of a study community have been likened to the processes by which individuals ascend from youth to adult status in
traditional societies, or by which migrant peoples are accepted into a new community. It is early in their experience at university that students are at greatest risk of withdrawing from tertiary study. GHC students attend a specially designed Orientation as their first social involvement with the Griffith University community. College members are encouraged to participate in networking events, particularly at the beginning of the year, because these positive experiences may minimise the risk of attrition. Not surprisingly, pastoral care and socialising with like-minded students continue to be identified as high priorities for students. Participation in events such as the Annual Symposium, Volunteering Abroad, Critical Thinking Based on Popular Culture and Model United Nations Forums increases the students' sense of belonging to the University community as well as presenting opportunities to acquire the skills, confidence and attributes to become tomorrow’s leaders. The ongoing challenge for GHC staff and the Virtual Faculty is not only to identify what will encourage students to feel a sense of belonging but also to deliver these activities within the allocated budget. With the change in Government policy having the possibility to impact on Griffith’s quantity and quality of student cohort, a review of data was undertaken. Enrolment figures show that many high achieving students in the catchment area did not place Griffith as the first choice University. In 2002, the University established the Student Retention Project which recommended that efforts to improve retention and increase high achieving entry students be ‘frontloaded’ to the first year. The Project also stressed the importance of a ‘whole of University approach’. These were the drivers to establish GHC in 2008 and these issues remained relevant in 2012.
4 Who were the targeted students? Entry to GHC is through a combined Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship / Honours College application form. A total of 185 places were available to the following categories of applicants:-
High achieving commencing students, including school
leavers, non-school leavers and International students
Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship recipients
High achieving domestic and international continuing
students, with a cumulative GPA of 6.5 or above
George Alexander Foundation Scholarship recipients
who meet the criteria.
In 2012 admission to the GHC was made available to students enrolled in their first undergraduate degree of three years or more in duration. Membership is not available to students enrolled in a postgraduate degree, research higher degree or a bachelor degree of less than three years in duration. An exception has been made for students undertaking the Griffith two year Bachelor of Medical Science Program in preparation for possible entry into Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery.
4.1 2012 Brochure and Application Form The application form for commencing students went online for the first time in the 2012 application round. For continuing students the application form remained a downloadable paper form. Refer to Appendix 3 & 4
4 Griffith Honours College | 2012 Annual Report
5 What were the selection criteria? In 2012, entry to the GHC was available to school leavers and non-school leavers who had not previously completed a Bachelor degree. To be eligible for selection, an applicant must be:- 1. commencing an undergraduate degree as a domestic or
international student and not previously completed the requirements of a course of study regarded as equivalent to or higher than a bachelor award and has a score of OP1-3* (including International Baccalaureate (IB) and interstate equivalent Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)); or
2. continuing an undergraduate degree as a domestic or
international student having achieved a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 6.5 out of 7 or equivalent, completed a minimum of 40 credit points and demonstrated leadership and community involvement, where the student has not previously completed the requirements of a course of study regarded as equivalent to or higher than a bachelor award; or
3. a Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship recipient
4. a George Alexander Foundation Scholarship recipient who meets criteria 1.
Both commencing and continuing students must be able to demonstrate exceptional personal achievements.
* Applicants expecting an OP4-6 (including IB and interstate equivalent ATAR) with exceptional personal achievements may be considered. Selection is based on:- Applications for the GHC are assessed against the eligibility and selection criteria and an order of merit list is prepared by the GHC and forwarded to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) for approval. Applications must be made on the designated application form and must provide relevant documentation to facilitate an assessment of eligibility and merit. As there will be more applicants than places available, not all applicants meeting the eligibility criteria will be offered entry to the Griffith Honours College. Selection will be based on:
academic merit;
written statements;
personal qualities (motivation towards University study,
career aspirations, likelihood of success in university
study) and personal achievements.
6 Who was accepted into the 2012 Cohort?
588 students were part of the College in 2012. Which
include Commencing, new Continuing students and current active members.
Because of the high quality of continuing students’ applications, Professor Susan Spence approved an additional quota of 35 students in this cohort.

17 Volunteering projects Because of the positive outcomes achieved through experiential learning, Griffith Honours College continues to expand its involvement in community engagement. For the fourth year, GHC supported its project in Siem Riep (Cambodia) in the hope that their efforts will contribute to Cambodian children having improved employment opportunities in the local tourism industry. In response to feedback from students, an additional national activity was introduced to increase students’ level
of awareness of environment issues and Aboriginal culture. Students participated in a WildMob event at Moreton Island. GHC students worked as Ambassadors for The SchoolBag project. After raising funds to provide school supplies and sporting equipment to primary schools in Timor Leste, ten Griffith Honours College students joined The Schoolbag Executive and travelled to Timor Leste to deliver the donations to schools in four districts.
17.1 Student Feedback on Volunteering Projects The following extracts have been taken from student feedback and reports:
“Cambodia. Wow. It is hard to sum up a trip that has been such an amazing experience. Words to describe the past few weeks include – awesome, fun, rewarding, challenging, stretching, engaging, growing, educational, team building, energizing, encouraging, eye opening and of course hot! This little journey through a beautiful country with such welcoming people was the best introduction into an Asian culture that I could have hoped for as a first-time traveller to this continent.” Volunteering in Cambodia
“I believe Jeanne said it best that there is no way to prepare yourself for a trip like this to a third world country if you have never experienced anything similar before. I am so glad I read up on some of the tragic history of Timor Leste before travelling there because I feel it at least formed a little connection to the people. I will never forget the first school we visited where all the kids surrounded the car and just stared at us. I have never felt like an outsider before and it was very uncomfortable because suddenly we became the minority. The communication with the kids began with a simple smile and wave but it was absolutely incredible to see how sports connect people from all over the world no matter what language they speak. These children grew up with absolutely nothing and they were so excited to see a soccer ball whereas we complain about not having the latest iPhone.” Volunteering in Timor Leste
“Alongside the conservation work was time for us to talk about issues affecting marine ecosystems on a local, national and global level. Watching the documentaries about plastics in the ocean, and discussing ways we can reduce our impact, was incredibly eye opening and valuable for me. I still feel shocked about what I was taught, and have made changes to my behaviour so that my personal impact is reduced. “ Volunteering in Moreton Bay

18 International Experiences
KPI: Provide support for students who indicate a desire to have an international experience.
18.1 Short Term International Experiences In 2012 activities were offered to students to explicitly encourage them to strengthen their Griffith graduate attributes. In particular, a number of professional development and leadership events were offered which focused on the students’ competence in culturally diverse and international environments. The competitive
Global Voices Youth delegations continue to be a highlight. Students noted in their reflective journals that they believe that the improvement in their communication and team building skills will make them more competitive when applying for internships within international companies.

19.1 SIFE – Volunteering@Griffith In its fourth year of operation the GHC Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) - Volunteering@Griffith Club competed in the National championship and placed in the top eight. Student surveys showed that students are very involved in community engagement at school but when they enrol at university even though their interest is still high they do not know how to be engaged. SIFE set up a database of students willing to volunteer and also acts as a first point of contact for local and national volunteer agencies. Board members are appointed in March each year for a twelve month period. This year the students were involved in Helping Hands, Innovate Media, Mental Health First Aid for Youth and International Projects. Late in the year the International Board advised that there would be a name change to En-Act-Us commencing in 2013. The 2012 SIFE Board consisted of:- Industry Mr Tim Soutar - HSBC Ms Peta Tilse - Trust Advice Mr David Morgan - RBSSC Academic Professor Alf Lizzio - Director of Griffith Institute of Higher Education (GIHE) Professor Marie Wilson - Dean, Griffith Business School

23 Conclusion
In 2008, Griffith University had great foresight to design and
implement the first Honours College in an Australian
University. High achieving students continue to express their
appreciation for the recognition and rewards that they
receive through their membership of the College. At the end
of the fifth year of its operation the College has many
highlights including the excellent academic results achieved
by the majority of its student members. Many of our
students have received accolades both nationally and
internationally however it is worthy of mention that in the
2012 round all five nominated GHC students received the
prestigious Prime Minister’s Asia Pacific Award. 2012 was
the first year for the pilot program offering the students the
opportunity to undertake a summer research program.
Students had to find an academic researcher who was willing
to supervise their project over the summer break. The
Honours College is not directly aligned to further studies,
however, students are encouraged to look at the benefits of
postgraduate and research higher degrees studies as an
alternative to direct entry into the workforce. This year saw
the largest cohort of GHC graduates. Each student received
gift in recognition of their contribution and an invitation to
the annual Alumni dinner. Arguably the College’s proudest
achievement is the continued outcomes achieved from the
students’ voluntary contributions to the University, local and
international communities.
