Continental Breakfast and Lunch included!

The AFS BC Chapter brings you a one day seminar highlighting grinding safety in the foundry. With the

inherent dangers involved in grinding castings we must all make sure to remain vigilant in the safe use

of abrasive wheel grinding tools and media.

During this seminar we will have two industry experts, one from WESCO Production Tools Ltd., Ross

Barbour, and one from Tyrolit, Kevin Robb, discuss the safe and proper use of grinding tools, including

guards, and abrasive media, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). With many new em-

ployees joining the casting industry, often starting in the cleaning room, this safety issue is as im-

portant as ever!

We are looking forward to this informative and very important seminar, and we hope to see you all

there!

Space is limited, so register yourself and your team early.

Contact David Lalonde at 604-626-5109 or [email protected] to register.

Our presenters will be:

Kevin Robb, Western Regional Manager at Tyrolit, Vancouver, BC

RECAP: 62nd AFS NORTHWEST REGIONAL CONFERENCE

P.I.E.—Productivity, Innovation, Embracing Opportunities

We came to Vancouver, and we got a piece of the PIE!

Every three years the metal casting community that makes up the AFS BC Chapter has the honour of putting on a Northwest Regional Con-

ference in Vancouver, BC. Bringing together the AFS chapters of BC, Washington and Oregon, this conference provides an opportunity for education and networking, with a focus on global issues, while also promoting our shared regional experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you to all the speakers, the attendees, the exhibitors, the sponsors and advertisers, and of course, the organizing committee; thank

you to everyone for coming together and making this an excellent conference! The committee would like to give a special thank you to our driving force, Eric Hasselmann, the Conference Chair (aka big chief), for his vision (he often had PIE on his mind) and his w ill to put on a

great event!

We ended the conference on a high note at the Vancouver Aquarium, where we were entertained by and educated about the Pacific white-

sided dolphins. After the show we completed the business portion of the evening, our AFS chapter AGM, where the membership approved the

annual financial report. We also gave our thanks to Casey Sheriland for his many years of service on the board and for this past year as our

AFS BC Chapter Chair.

For your information, the Pacific white-sided dolphins at the Vancouver Aquarium aren’t just fun, frolicking animals; they’re also rescued

animals that are now serious research assistants. They’re helping researchers understand how they use their sonar (echolocation) to locate objects in the water. The discoveries from this study may one day help support dolphin-friendly fishing practices that will prevent dolphins from becoming entangled in nets in the future.
