INTRODUCTION
The Grindrod group is traded on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange and offers
a worldwide range of high-quality shipping,
trading, financial and freight services by
land, air, and sea.
While the group’s head office is in Durban (South Africa),
Grindrod is represented by subsidiaries, joint venture
and associated companies in 24 other countries.
As a South African listed company, Grindrod
views empowerment as an important aspect of
its corporate social responsibilities and has for
a number of years been engaged in processes
aimed at enhancing the scorecard. It is
Grindrod’s intention to ensure all its South African
operations have a minimum BEE accreditation
level of 4.

The Shipping division’s modern fleet of dry cargo vessels and product & chemical tankers trade globally
under the banners of Island View Shipping and Unicorn Shipping.
Though still trading under two brands, the businesses have consolidated into one business unit which brings together two
highly skilled and experienced teams.
The teams analyse shipping and commodity markets to position optimum levels of the fleet within various ship sectors.
This is done to take advantage of sectors which reflect strong fundamentals, including securing ships via a combination of
direct ownership, and long- and short-term time charters to service the division’s trades. Understanding the markets has allowed
the Shipping division’s team to recognize and act on opportunities such as ordering ships when markets have indicated a
future shortage of a particular class of ship.
Grindrod will continue expanding the fleet with the intention of owning 51 ships by 2011. The diversified fleet of Handysize,
Handymax, Panamax, Capesize bulk vessels, product & chemical tankers, container vessels and bunker tankers are built to
the highest quality and are fully double-skinned. Their advanced features have positive implications for energy conservation,
safety and environmental protection.
The business is highly operational, chartering in ships to complement owned ships and carrying all types of cargo globally.
Offices in Durban, Cape Town, Richards Bay, Rotterdam, Dubai, Singapore, Tokyo and London ensure that it continues to
run smoothly.
Looking at the two brands individually, IVS is focused on moving dry bulk cargo such as minerals, coal, ores and agricultural
products, while Unicorn Shipping is focused on moving liquid chemicals and petroleum products.
Much of the Shipping division’s success is as a result of the
long term, solid relationships built up over the past few decades.

GRINDROD L IMITEDIVS was founded in 1976, acquired by Grindrod Limited in 1999 and has become a prominent bulk ship owner
and operator, shipping between 15 and 18 million tons per annum globally.
• IVSI - Handysize
LB/IVSI JV - Lauritzen Bulkers
IVSI and Lauritzen Bulkers (LB/IVSI JV) formed
a Handysize joint venture (JV) in 2001.
The LB/IVSI JV involves the merging of all
resources in the 25 000 – 40 000 deadweight
segment. The fleet, exceeding 60 vessels is
one of the largest modern Handysize fleets
in the world. This is jointly operated out of
Lauritzen Bulkers head office in Copenhagen
supported by offices in New York, Melbourne,
Durban and Singapore giving the LB/IVSI JV
a global coverage of the world markets.
• Island Trading & Shipping
IVSI is also a joint shareholder in Island
Trading and Shipping (I.T.A.S) based in
Singapore. I.T.A.S has a primary focus
on the shipment of grains and protein
into southern Africa and the Indian Ocean
Islands from South America and Europe.
In addition to the joint ventures with
Lauritzen and I.T.A.S. as mentioned
above, IVSI jointly own ships in Triview
(JV Mitsui), IM Shipping (JV Mitsubishi)
and Handy Venture (JV Lauritzen).
• IVSI – Handymax
(competitive chartering)
IVSI is currently building a handymax
chartering operation based in Singapore
with branch offices in London, Dubai,
Durban and Tokyo. Offices in USA and
China are planned for the future.
• Cape & Panamax vessels
An experienced chartering team is
located in Singapore with an agency
office in Cape Town. The fleet is
employed both on Time Charter to major
operators and to service its expanding
cargo base. The Cape operation currently
represents a carrying capacity of 7 / 8
million tons per annum.
The South African operation
Offers a regular Handysize / Handymax
parcel service to the north-west Continent,
UK, USA, and the Mediterranean,
scheduling 8 to 12 vessels per month from
South Africa, Mozambique, East Africa
and Namibian ports and operates regularly
in the following trades:

date as far back as the 1860’s. Unicorn’s emblem and red, blue & white colours are a familiar sight on international
waters and are known for high quality and standards.

The company’s stainless steel
chemical tankers participate in the
Stolt Tankers Joint Service – one of
the world’s largest chemical tanker
operators. Stolt is based in Rotterdam
and has offices in Singapore,

Unilog provides a procurement service to the marine industry through branches in Durban and Cape Town.
This includes the international sourcing,
importing and customs clearance of
equipment, spares, stores and provisions.
Unilog also operates accredited life raft sales,
servicing and repair stations, together with
an ultra-sonic cleaning service.
Unilog is the exclusive South African
sales and service representative for
various reputable international marine
equipment manufacturers.
Unilog also offers an away-from-home full-
service office base for shipowners’ Superinten-
dents attending vessels dry-docking or under
repair in Durban.

Ecuador and is a major trader and supplier of agricultural
commodities worldwide (approx. 3.5 million tons annually).
Wheat, corn, soybean meal and other agricultural
commodities are marketed in bulk to international third-
party customers.
Commodities are purchased worldwide with primary
destinations in Africa, South America, the Caribbean, and
the Eastern Mediterranean.
Delivery is made by chartered bulk vessels.

Oreport is an international marketing organisation specialising in the worldwide
procurement, physical movement and distribution of industrial raw materials.
Oreport provides a completely managed process from the materials point
of origin through to delivery to the final purchaser and collection of payment.
Oreport currently markets Steel; Stainless Steel; Chrome and Manganese
Ores: Bulk Ferro Alloys; Nobel Alloys; Coal; Coke; Anthracite; Mineral Sands;
Pig Iron; Mill Rolls and Non Ferrous Products.
Oreport is ISO 9001/2000 accredited and in the 23 years since inception,
has grown its international agency base to include many well known and
respected suppliers. Grindrod acquired a 50% shareholding in Oreport
through Oreport’s holding company Oreport Holdings (Pty) Limited, effective
1 July 2005, and acquired 100% ownership in 2008.

Cockett Marine Oil is one of the world's top suppliers of bunkers and marine
lubricants, supplying approx. 5 million tons of bunkers per annum with a
turnover of US$1 billion.
The company’s objective is to realise significant savings for their customers
- turning the burden of bunker purchasing costs into a competitive advantage.
Cockett Marine will help a company achieve broad market access, meaningful
economies of scale with higher availability of products and services and
minimize the exposure to fuel volume, delivery, price and quality risks.
Cockett has offices in United Kingdom, Singapore, South Africa, United States,
Monaco, Russia, Brazil and Panama.
Grindrod purchased a 50% share in Cockett Marine Oil in July 2005, and
acquired 100% ownership in 2008.

Ocean Africa Container Lines is a joint venture between Grindrod Limited
and Safmarine, operating a service in the southern African region between
Nacala on the east coast and Luanda on the west coast, including the
neighbouring landlocked countries.
Ocean Africa provides a feeder service to mainline carriers from around the
world, carries regional and commercial cargo, providing southern African
customers with a complete freight logistics service including warehousing,
distribution and inland transportation.

Unical is a black empowered joint venture between Grindrod and Calulo
Shipping Services, providing in port bunker deliveries and petrochemical
coastal shipping.
The In Port Bunker division operates in the ports of Durban, under contract
to the oil majors (Shell / BP / Engen) and in Cape Town under contract to
Chevron. They service the shipping industry with two of the most modern,
brand new (2008), bunker tankers afloat in the world today, each capable
of carrying approximately 4500 tons of product (HFO / Gas Oil / Diesel)
separately segregated. Featuring Double hulls, redundant propulsion systems,
closed loading, radar cargo measurement, the bunker tankers have been
designed to meet and exceed all the oil majors safety and operational
requirements. They are staffed by qualified and experienced seafarers who
provide a world class service to UNICAL’s customers. A third identical
bunker tanker is under construction in Durban and will be entering service
in Durban in the 3rd quarter 2009.
Unical’s coastal shipping division operates product tankers along the southern
African coastline under contract to Shell, BP, ENGEN, Chevron and Total.
The high quality vessels embody the latest safety and environmental
protection characteristics with special features designed to ensure reliable
service along South Africa’s notoriously demanding seaboard.
This company is well positioned to grow with the southern African regional
economy.

The Ships Agencies falling within the Grindrod group operate
totally independently and autonomously from one another
and provide agency services to a number of respected liner
and non-liner Principals. These services include vessel
husbandry, landside management of cargoes, NVOCC
services, container logistics and leasing.
The Ships Agencies are represented in all ports of SA, Namibia,
Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana & Swaziland.
They provide agency services in the shipment of bulk and
breakbulk cargo, both liquid and dry and are active in the
reefer and project cargo arena.
They also provide agency services for naval attaches, cruise
line operators & fishing fleets.
Rail transport facilities are offered through Kingsway Marine.

Grindrod Tank Terminals is a division of the multi-faceted Grindrod South Africa, which
has rapidly grown its land based operations over the last four years.
Grindrod Tank Terminals is an independent liquid bulk operator that has managed port
side bulk storage and transit facilities in the strategic ports of Durban and Cape Town.
These facilities have provided crucial services to the market for over 80 years.
Our combined facilities cater mainly for storage, handling and distribution of various
chemical and vegetable oil products. We are responsible for distributing ± 480 000
tons of product per annum into the South African domestic market using a purpose-
designed fleet of vehicles.
Our business strategy targets sustainable opportunities that enable an accelerated
investment programme, both in terms of acquisitions and resources. In 2008 we
purchased a 50% share of a vegetable oil terminal in the port of Maputo in Mozambique.
We promote long term associations with stakeholders, translating their core business
drivers into internal processes and operations, to deliver strategic value into the
supply chain.
Grindrod business units actively work together exchanging knowledge and proficiency.
We respond swiftly, innovatively and accurately to changing customer requirements
and market developments. Through these collaborative efforts we set the highest

The Grindrod Maputo car terminal spanning an area of 34 757 m2 came
in to operation a month ahead of schedule in November 2007.
With an initial capacity to park about 1 455 cars and an annual throughput
capacity of 68 000 cars (based on a 6 day dwell time), the terminal
offers an immediate solution to complement the South African car
terminals operating under severe capacity constraints.
The Maputo Car Terminal is a registered Transit Clearing and Forwarding
agent and Maputo is an ideal complementary port for the import and
export of vehicles delivering to, or manufactured in Gauteng.
The agreement to lease the car terminal for a 25 year period, with the
option to extend for a further 10 years, was reached with MPDC and
the Government of Mozambique. Further to this, Grindrod was to
develop phase 1 (now complete), and at a later date phases 2 and 3
increasing the throughput capacity to 250 000 cars per annum.
Höegh Autoliners entered into an agreement to acquire an interest in
the car terminal. The parties will co-operate on issues such as cargo
operations quality, with the objective of developing the terminal as a
major hub port for the region.
A secondary market will focus on the second hand import car market
to service other African countries and the transshipment of vehicles
for the eastern seaboard.

Grindrod Stevedores, a black empowered business, is represented in all major ports
in South Africa, Maputo and Walvis Bay. The stevedoring services include the handling
of bulk commodities, break bulk commodities, containers and vehicles.
FACT
Future Auto Carrier Transport (FACT) provides a vehicle stevedoring
and driving service function within the Durban and East London Car
Terminals on behalf of Transnet Port Terminals and major vehicle
manufacturers.
The Stevedoring activities include the loading and discharge of all import
and export vehicles from vessels, including transshipments. The driving
services include the transfer of vehicles between rail, vessel and carrier;
ultimately for distribution throughout South Africa. Other services include
monitoring vehicles for damages whilst in the car terminal (from point
of entry to dispatch) and the management of the internal distribution
processes of vehicles to be moved. FACT also provides additional
auxiliary services within the Car Terminal ranging from the washing of
import / export vehicles to supporting the internal fitment process of
certain units.
FACT employs approximately 430 people and is currently developing a
training program for all supervisors, drivers and checkers in order to
provide a world class service.

Grindrod Stevedores, a black empowered business, is represented in all major ports
in South Africa, Maputo and Walvis Bay. The stevedoring services include the handling
of bulk commodities, break bulk commodities, containers and vehicles.
Bay Stevedores in the port of Richards Bay, was established
in 1993 and specialises in the pay loading and separation of bulk
cargo – a pay loader (“Reach Machine”) is lowered into the hold
of the vessel pushing cargo into position. Once the cargo is
loaded and payloaded, a welded wall of steel metal plates is put
in place which separates it from the next cargo to be loaded.
Bay Stevedores complements existing terminal operations in
Richards Bay, and extends the service offering to customers in
the bulk cargo handling market. The business provides services
to Grindrod affiliated companies as well as third parties.
BayStevedores
Auto Carriers is a prominent transporter of motor vehicles
in southern Africa, providing distribution and logistical
services to a substantial number of South African car
manufacturers and other importers.
Integral to their service is the electronic interface with
their clients which includes a vehicle tracking system
accommodating real-time tracking of vehicles, web
based user interface, advanced electronic data inter-
change interfacing and automated messaging.
The company is ISO 9001:2 000 certified and is highly
rated in the motor vehicle delivery industry for risk
management, reliability, customer service and ability to
meet deadlines.
Auto logistics are undertaken by road carriers, rail, or
self drive options throughout southern Africa.

The Furniture division is a transport, distribution and supply chain service
provider to the manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers of furniture
and décor products.
Facilities are situated in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
The fleet of close to 100 vehicles, ranging in size from 140 m3 line haulers
to 10 m3 panel vans, delivers to all the main hubs in South Africa. The staff
complement of 320 people are skilled and experienced.

tipping and bottom discharge units in use to serve both
the agri and mining sectors.
The fleet is active in the entire SADEC region, with all the
main corridors being serviced. The division also offers
regional distribution services of bagged agri products, with
its specialized fleet of 24 trucks made up of 8, 12 and 34
ton Tautliners.
The division’s Head Office is in Kliprivier (Johannesburg),
with depots in Nigel and Pinetown.
Liquid Bulk Transport services the Petrochemical,
Molasses and Vegetable Oil Industries with a fleet of
specialized tankers.
The Molasses and Vegetable Oil tankers (28 in total) are
based in Cape Town, Durban and Piet Retief, and are
operated by our Tank Terminals division.
The Petrochemical division provides bridging services to
all the fuel majors. Services are provided in South Africa,

LCL Grindrod (LCLG) is a joint venture between Grindrod and LauritzenCool Logistics.
The company based in Cape Town, provides sea and land based perishable logistics
(door-to-door for most local shippers and growers) in southern Africa. LCLG also has an

Grindrod Intermodal provides a complete solution for containerized cargo – full service countrywide and over border transportation of
containerized cargo by road and rail, comprehensive empty and full container depot services and complex warehousing & distribution
solutions including cross dock and bonded warehousing. In 2007, Grindrod merged 3 complementary businesses (Cross Country
Containers, CMC Grindrod and Grindrod J&J Logistics) to form Grindrod Intermodal – combining strong administration with strong
operations. In early 2008, Unitainer, also a container logistics business was brought into the Grindrod Intermodal stable.
The services of the transportation division (formerly Cross Country Containers) include railage of full and empty containers, covering
all routes between Transnet Port Terminals and Transnet Freight Rail terminals within South Africa and other southern African destinations,
a local cartage service in the major cities and a long distance service covering southern Africa. The company’s operating system produces
all prescribed transport documentation and monitors the movement of containers between respective delivery points, and reports

The warehousing operation (formerly Grindrod J & J), offers a blue chip client base high levels of operational expertise. Nationally
situated warehouses are dedicated to specific contracts or cargo types, including steel products, ferrochrome, cars, CKD components,
sugar and unitized bulk cargo. Services include container packing and unpacking, cargo handling, storage and distribution, as well as
customs services. Certain facilities are licensed to handle bonded cargo and also provide groupage services. In the project cargo arena,
the lashing team has a reputation for ingenious solutions with specialized cargo.
The sales and leasing division (formerly Unitainer) specialize in buying, selling and leasing second-hand and refrigerated containers,
as well as converts second-hand marine containers into accommodation (site offices, spaza shops, etc).
Greater supply chain efficiencies are now offered through the merger of a complementary national infrastructure of
500 000m2, assets to the value of R150 million and resources including a team of 700 dedicated employees.

ContainerisedCargo
RRL Grindrod is a 50% black owned joint venture
between Solethu Investments and Grindrod.
This business provides locomotive leasing, rail operations
and shunting services to its clients. These services
include inbound and outbound rail management, building
of train sets, loading / off-loading of rail wagons and the
management of its clients’ relationship with Transnet
Freight Rail to ensure the smooth running of their rail
operations.
RRL Grindrod’s intention is to grow its locomotive fleet
