Dear patients, partners, and community members,

Thanks to an exceptional team of physicians, nurses, clinicians, employees, and volunteers, Gritman Medical Center is honored to be your hospital of choice for the past 120 years.

Gritman was recently named one of the 2016 Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States by iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health. This elite designation places Gritman in the top 10% of critical access hospitals in the nation and the only hospital on the Palouse to be named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital. Additionally, we were pleased to be one of only 54 hospitals recognized in Becker’s Review with the best patient discharge communication practices in the country.

Locally, we were honored to receive the 2017 Inland 360 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Hospital, selected by you – our community.

These achievements continue to validate our daily commitment to providing exceptional health care to the people of our community. And in the coming years, we anticipate a continued increase in demand for the specialized care provided by our teams of experts and innovative partnerships.

The addition of Gritman’s new Medical Office Building will allow for the growth of these much-needed services. In December, the CHAS Clinic began seeing their first patients in the new location. In the next

Your health is our priority. Offering exceptional healthcare is the mission of our organization and is at the center of all we do. This focus is why our highly-qualified caregivers have been dedicated to our team for years. It is why more patients are coming to Gritman for care and why more outstanding caregivers want to join our team. We are looking forward to seeing the ones we train today return tomorrow to practice beside us. You are the reason we continue to raise the standard of excellence.

PEDIATRICS

Making it all better: Pediatric Emergency Nurses Gritman Medical Center emergency nurse Linda Darby, RN, CEN, and Emergency Department Director Nicole Wheaton, RN, CEN, validated their competencies as Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course Instructors in 2016. The validation for instructor status is earned only after demonstrating high proficiency and competency in caring for pediatric patients in the ER and passing the course with high percentages. There are now 16 nurses at Gritman who hold Emergency Nurse Pediatric certifications.

Premier Pediatric Hospitalist ProgramIn order to provide specialized, accessible health care to children on the Palouse, Gritman Medical Center is proud to partner with Moscow Family Medicine and Moscow Medical for the Gritman Pediatric Hospitalist Program. The Gritman Pediatric Hospitalist Program ensures children and their families are supported through care teams, coordinated care with specialists, constant communication with primary care physicians and pediatricians, and having a hospitalist available around the clock to deliver a higher level of attention. Led by Guillermo Modad, M.D., Pediatric Medical Director at Gritman Medical Center, the program has 12 highly-trained pediatric hospitalists from Moscow Medical, Moscow Family Medicine and Gritman.

Sweet dreams for your little one: Safe Sleep AwardsFor the second year in a row, Gritman’s Family Birth Center was recognized as a Gold Safe Sleep Champion by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program for its commitment to infant safe sleep best practices and education. Gritman was the first hospital on the Palouse and the first in Idaho to receive this accomplishment. Gritman’s Family Birth Center was also recognized as a Safe Sleep Champion by the Inland Northwest Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Dedicated to women’s health: MyoSureGritman purchased the MyoSure® tissue removal system in 2016, allowing for safer and more comfortable removal of uterine fibroids or polyps. MyoSure® allows physicians to remove fibroids or polyps without having to cut or remove any part of the uterus. This is especially important for women planning to have children in the future, or who would like to avoid a hysterectomy.

The Mother’s Room opened in the Fall of 2016, giving students, staff and faculty a comfortable place to feed their baby.

Next generation of philanthropistsHigh school volleyball teams from Troy, Genesee and Moscow partnered with Gritman to raise more than $4,000 to support Gritman’s Bosom Buddies program, a fund that helps local women receive mammograms free of charge.

COMMITTED TO QUALITY

Enhancing care coordination services for Medicare patientsIn 2016, Gritman Medical Center partnered with health care organizations in 12 similar communities and 3 states to form the Mountain West Accountable Care Organization (ACO). ACOs are a collaboration of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers who come together to provide coordinated, high-quality care to our patients.

Marisa Gillaspie-Aziz, RN, joined Gritman to serve as the hospital’s care coordinator.

Community Health Needs Assessment: Identifying key health needs to better serve the community As a non-profit hospital, Gritman Medical Center works hard to meet the needs of the community and provide the best possible care to residents. To help guide our efforts and use of resources, we conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) every three years. We gather data from a variety of sources and survey knowledgeable local experts; this information was analyzed to determine the top five health needs facing our community:

1. Mental health/suicide 2. Substance abuse 3. Physicians (Physician Shortage)4. Affordability/accessibility 5. Obesity/overweight

We then develop a plan to address these needs, including programs and services the hospital already offers, new programs we may offer in the future, organizations we can partner with and how to track our progress.

If you would like to review the complete CHNA, please go to our website, gritman.org.

If you would like to provide feedback on the CHNA, please email [email protected].

Kendrick PharmacyIn order to keep pharmacy services in Kendrick, Gritman Medical Center began working with the Idaho State University’s College of Pharmacy (Bengal Pharmacy) in 2016 to pursue tele-pharmacy services.

Advanced technology in wound healing: LUNAThe only diagnostic tool of its kind in the region, the LUNA enables physicians to detect areas with inadequate blood flow before they develop into more serious issues. The Gritman Wound Healing Center purchased the LUNA in 2016. Early detection of blood flow loss can help prevent the amputation of limbs.

Swing bed services: Caring for you a little longer Gritman’s commitment to providing exceptional patient-centered care led us to begin swing bed services in 2016. The swing bed program allows qualifying patients the opportunity to stay at the hospital for a few additional days of recovery and rehabilitation before discharge. With pain management and an expert staff of therapists and nurses, swing bed services lower a patient’s chance of rehospitalization. Swing bed patients also have access to Gritman inpatient Therapy Solutions for physical, speech, occupational or massage therapy.

A healthier you: National Diabetes Prevention ProgramThe Gritman Diabetes Prevention Program was a huge success in 2016 with 42 participants losing an average 12 pounds each. Research shows that people with prediabetes who take part in a structured life-style change program, such as DPP, can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. These classes will continue in 2017.

Committed to heart health: Gritman selected to participate in national programGritman Medical Center was selected as one of 516 health care organizations in the nation to participate in Million Hearts® — a national initiative that aims to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Gritman providers will work with patients to reduce heart attacks and strokes through education, prevention and care management of cardiovascular disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services co-lead the initiative on behalf of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For more information on the Million Hearts® initiative, visit millionhearts.hhs.gov.

Expanding medical services on the Palouse: Medical Office BuildingFrom the groundbreaking on Sept. 24, 2015, to the first patient visit on Dec. 12, 2016, the Gritman Medical Office Building has brought additional affordable and technologically advanced care to the Palouse. Located on the corner of Eighth and Main streets, the new facility is approximately 54,000 square feet and will house new services, including oncology. The building also gives existing services, like CHAS Latah Community Health Services, Gritman Cardiac Rehabilitation and Gritman Clinical Nutrition and Diabetes, room to grow.

Affordable and accessible: CHAS ClinicThe new Gritman Medical Office Building saw its first patient on Dec. 12, 2016, as CHAS Latah Community Health opened its doors. The new space offers medical, behavioral health, pharmacy and dental services on a sliding-fee scale. CHAS is a non-profit, federally-qualified health center that provides high-quality care, regardless of insurance status. CHAS has provided services on

the Palouse since 2013. The Gritman Medical Office Building has given them room to expand into dental health. CHAS is the first permanent, low-income dental facility on the Palouse.

Prepared for anything: Cascadia RisingGritman Medical Center and other area emergency response agencies participated in Cascadia Rising, the largest-ever regional

exercise supported by FEMA Region X (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington) that included local, state, tribal and federal partners. Cascadia Rising simulated a magnitude 9.0 earthquake — of equal magnitude to the devastating earthquake and following tsunami that struck Japan in 2011. Cascadia Rising helped ensure Gritman and other regional emergency response partners are working together to save lives and property.

EDUCATION

Revolutionary learning: Gritman opens Simulation Learning CenterTraining doctors to serve rural communities is one of Gritman Medical Center’s top priorities. With this in mind, Gritman recently dedicated a portion of the hospital to serve as a simulation learning center for local Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) medical students.

Working with six local physicians, 25 second-year medical students performed focused physical assessments on volunteers acting as patients during Gritman’s inaugural simulation lab.

On March 1, 2016, Gritman Medical Center, in partnership with University of Washington Medicine, Virginia Mason and Russo CME, began to offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) through a new webinar program, Morning CME. Morning CME allows medical personnel to earn CME credits online from remote sites. Providers are required to earn 50 to 80 CME hours per year, depending on their area of expertise and location (different states require different measures). The innovative program is offered in six states in the Pacific Northwest: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.
