Grocery ListUse the activity ideas below to turn trips to the

grocery store into fun learning experiences.

I SpySay “I spy ___.”

and fill in the blank with hints. With an apple, you

might say, “I spy something red and round.” Give hints

until your child guesses what

you spy!

Which is Heavier?

In the produce section, help your child select two items and guess which is heavier. Then help your child weigh the

items on the scale to check their

prediction.

Fruit or Veggie? Hold up a fruit and

a vegetable and have your child

point out which is the fruit and which is the vegetable.





Brrrrr In the freezer section,

let your child touch something cold before you put it in the shopping cart. Discuss the experience and

compare the cold item with other items

in the cart.

Chatting in the Cart

As you place an item in your cart, help your child identify

the beginning sound of the item.

“A-a-a-a-apple.” “B-b-b-b-butter.”

This or That? Help your child make simple comparisons

between objects. Hold up two boxes

and ask, “Which is taller?” You

could also do big/small, warm/cold, and heavy/light comparisons.





Family Helper Help your child show initiative

and follow simple directions by asking

for help in the grocery store. Ask your child to select an item from the shelf and place it

in the cart. You can also ask for help

unloading groceries at home.

Songs in the Aisles Make up silly songs about

grocery shopping and/or food items to sing with the your child. For

example: “This is the way we shop

for food, shop for food, shop for food, This is the way we shop for food, early in the

morning.”

Rhyme Game Call out a food item and help your child come up with silly rhyming words. If

you call out “apple,” you and your child

may come up with “bapple” or

“lapple!”





Common Qualities Ask, “What do _____ and _____ have in

common?” Allow your child to think about the question and

figure out a common characteristic. For

example, a kiwi and peach are both fuzzy

and fruits.

Let’s Count Ask your child to

count the number of items you need and

place them in the cart. For example, “Can you put five

apples in this bag and then in

the cart?”

Find the letter?Ask your child to

find certain letters on packaged food

boxes. For example, “Can you find a

box with the letter A?” You can also

play this game with numbers.

Dele tiempo a su hijo para pensar en la respuesta y descubrir una

cualidad en común. Por ejemplo, tanto el mango como la piña

son frutas.

A contar Pídale a su hijo que cuente la cantidad de artículos que necesita y que

los coloque en el carro. Por ejemplo: “¿Puedes colocar

cinco manzanas en esta bolsa y luego dentro del carro?”

¿Puedes encontrar la letra?

Pídale a su hijo que encuentre

ciertas letras en las cajas de alimentos. “Encuentra una caja donde aparezca la letra A.” También

puede jugar buscando números.
