EVENTSCLASSESH

So, what’s new? Often this is a casual greeting between friends, relatives, and neighbors - people getting reacquainted and reconnected after a time apart. This has also been the question that Sue and I have been most frequently asked during the Grosse Pointe War Memorial’s (GPWM) Transparency Town Hall meetings, powerful Memorial Day programs,

impactful classes, and elegant special events. So, what is new at the War Memorial?

Inside, Sue and I are thrilled to present the most creative and extensively curated collection of events and classes we have ever offered at the GPWM. From conjuring your inner King Arthur in our Medieval Tournament to showing off your Salsa step in ballroom dance class, there is something engaging for everyone in your family to experience. Since we have added more than 20 events and classes to our schedule, it’s the perfect time to explore the wide range of new GPWM activities!

Finally, we are asking for your support of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial’s Annual Fund drive. As a non-profit organization, we rely upon the generosity of the public to support our important programs. To make a donation, please visit our website @ www.warmemorial.org. Your tax-deductible donation will help the GPWM “change lives by serving our community through unparalleled experiences.” Thank you in advance for your philanthropic support!

So, what’s new? The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is new – full of new ideas, reenergized with new classes and events, driven by a new purpose, and most importantly, a new spirit of connectivity to you.

Sincerely,

1

Memorial Day 2014 On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2014, hundreds gathered on the back lawn of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial for a memorable service to honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in military service to our country. The names of the Gold Star Honor Roll were respectfully read by members of the War Memorial Board of Directors, punctuated by the tolling of a ship’s bell after each war. Col. Benjamin P. Stinson, USMC delivered a moving address and the ceremony concluded with a recessional, led by a Joint Service Color Guard and a bagpiper performing Amazing Grace.

Patriots Scholarship Check PresentationThe Grosse Pointe War Memorial presented a $5,000 check through our Patriots Scholarship Fund to Southwest Solutions and Piquette Square to provide scholarship funds that will help five veterans continue their college education. Veterans returning from service can encounter problems ranging from unemployment to physical and mental illness and these scholarships will give them access to the education they need to create a bright future for themselves.

“ As a Veteran, I am truly grateful for the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, who are investing in our Military Veterans’ futures. Thank you again for your generous support and for investing in my future.” ~ Jason Wentworth

Meet the Author & Book SigningOperation Thunderclap and the Black March Wednesday, November 19 • 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

In February 1945, the Allies launched Operation Thunderclap, a series of maximum efforts against cities in eastern Germany. These deep-penetration raids would tax the bomber crews immensely, as well as bring new devastation to cities yet untouched by U.S. airpower. Two B-17 crew members, a co-pilot and gunner, were assigned to the longest-serving and most decorated U.S. bomb group in England. These crew members both lived – one resides in Grosse Pointe – and this is their story.
